The World Rugby Sevens Series is in full swing, and four Blitzboks are set to widen the gap between themselves and the rest when it comes to the list of South Africa’s all-time leading point-scorers.
South Africa kick off their season in Dubai against Kenya, with their opening match taking place at 17:45 (SAST) on Thursday.
Blitzboks leading point-scorers
Cecil Afrika is making his way back into the Sevens circuit after missing out on the previous edition of the World Series.
The 31-year-old begins his season with the Academy side, alongside some familiar faces in Branco du Preez and Werner Kok.
He leads South Africa’s all-time leading point-scorers list with 1 440 points, followed by Du Preez, who has an impressive haul of his own at 1 302.
Rather impressively, winger Seabelo Senatla is third on the list with 1 120 points – all tries.
Along with Afrika and Du Preez, they are the only South Africans to cross 1 000 points and, close to that mark, is a member of the squad currently in Dubai – Justin Geduld.
Only 49 points are required for Geduld to reach the magic mark, and an injury-free spell in the next two weeks could see him achieve the feat in front of his home crowd.
Last season saw him surpass a Sevens rugby legend in Fabian Juries, who finished his career with 925 points, and now sits in fifth place.
Juries’s spot among South Africa’s leading points-scorers in Sevens is not under immediate threat, with the next two names on the list no longer active.
Now a World Cup-winning Springbok assistant coach, Mzwandile Stick was a points-scoring machine during his heyday and ended his career with 855 points.
Also on the list is former Bulls utility back Stefan Basson, followed by Werner Kok – another player in Dubai with the Academy side, coached by the man directly below him, Marnus Schoeman.
The top 10 is rounded off by one of the select players who have represented both the Blitzboks and the Springboks in Brent Russell.
The “Pocket Rocket” collected 471 points for the Sevens side, also forging a successful career in 15-man rugby, which saw him don the famous green and gold.
