On this Heritage Day, Tuesday, 24 September 2024, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape will stand with the residents of Graaff-Reinet and other Karoo towns to halt ongoing efforts to change the names of their towns.
Most residents in Graaff-Reinet, Aberdeen, Adendorp, and Nieu-Bethesda have made it clear that they are against changing the names of their towns, which are interwoven with their rich heritage.
We will host an event in Graaff-Reinet to emphasize that the DA fully supports redress, but that meaningful redress including name changes must equate to improving lives.
The event will be led by DA Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy and Dr. Beyers Naude Constituency Leader, Samantha Graham-Maré MP; DA EC Provincial Chairperson, Yusuf Cassim MPL; DA Shadow MEC for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture (SRAC), Heinrich Muller MPL; and Deputy Provincial ADAC Chairperson, Cllr Joy Williams.
Join us as we commemorate Heritage Day by standing up for meaningful redress that will benefit all South Africans.
