The valley stretched out far below owes its ominous name to the Victorians. They christened it with the name of ‘Desolation’ after a great storm in 1826, which is said to have stripped the whole area clear of trees and vegetation with awesome force. The gradual regrowth of plants has long since repaired the devastation, and mother nature was given a helping hand when eight thousand trees were planted here in 1999 to further restore and advance the valley’s natural beauty.

In this shot, the camera was resting atop the summit ‘Trigonometry Point‘, which is placed on the crag to form the very highest part of the landscape for many miles around. These concrete pillars were erected all over the UK by an Ordnance Survey programme in 1935, whose mission was to assist in the accurate retriangulation of the country. By placing such posts on top of prominent hills and mountains, careful measurements of the angles between the lines-of-sight deduced the precise lay of the land to improve the accuracy of maps. The metal plate you can see in the foreground is where the Theodolite was placed – this is the tool that the surveyors used to measure the angles between all the trig points.

History: From the road leading to the Valley of Desolation the monument of Commandant Scheepers is visible. He was one of the Boer commando leaders during the Anglo Boer War. He was executed on the 18th of January 1902 at 15:30pm on the Murraysburg road. The monument is situated about 3km outside of town on the left-hand side of the road.
