the nearestpoint on Pacific tide water, a railroad was buildtby the Dominion Government and transferred to theCompany in 1886. Pennys is an old time ranchingsettlement. Ashcroft has developed into aAshcroft— busy town, being the point of de- Alt. 1,075 ft. parture for Cariboo and Ominecagold fields in the northern interiorSpatsum of British Columbia. Trains of freight wagons drawn by long stringsof pack-mules, laden with merchandise, depart fromand arrive here almost dialy. There are extensivecattle ranches in the vicinity, and considerable farm-ing is done. Three miles beyond Ashcroft the hillspress close upon the Thompson River, which cuts itsway through a winding gorge of almost terrifyinggloom and desolation, fitly named the Black Canyon.Emerging the train follows the river as it windsswiftly among the round topped, treeless and watercut hills. At Spences Bridge the oldSpences Bridge wagon road up this valley to theCariboo gold country crosses the Soo-Pacific True Scenic Route.
