The 2014 Subaru Forester XT may not be the first pick for adventurers who want to explore the plains of Africa, but host Arthur St. Antoine selects that vehicle for just such a mission in the newest episode of Epic Drives. While Land Rovers and Toyota Land Cruisers are the most common sets of wheels found traversing the African landscape, the compact Forester proves to be a worthy off-roader for a safari.
Before immersing himself in the wildlife, St. Antoine starts his drive in the South African neighborhood of Soweto, located within the city limits of Johannesburg. There, a tour guide provides a brief history on Apartheid and a few important bits of advice for embarking on the safari.
After hopping into the Forester to search for lions, elephants, and rhinos, St. Antoine points out a number of the Subaru’s safari-worthy features, including its best-in-class ground clearance of 8.7 inches and its strong 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer-four that produces 250 hp. The 2014 Forester had no issues crossing rivers, tackling deep sand, or climbing up rocky inclines. St. Antoine even had fun on a twisty road thanks to the Forester’s car-like handling, one attribute that sets the Subaru apart from the Rover and the Land Cruiser.
