The once beautiful town of Tarkastad in the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) has fallen victim to a corrupt and uncaring government over the decades.
Basic services have all but collapsed in this little Karoo town. Sewage leaks, potholes, broken streetlights and illegal dumping are, unfortunately, the norm in this once pristine town. There are no longer vehicles to collect refuse, as the municipality has had to sell off assets to pay debts.
The residents of Tarkastad (ward 33) are the forgotten people of the Enoch Mgijima municipality. Nobody is fighting for their rights, and they deserve better.
But all is not lost, and on 30 November 2022, residents can go to the polls to elect a DA public representative who will fight their cause in council.
The DA candidate for the ward 33 by-election, Garth Titus, has been on the ground with his team to bring hope to residents by addressing municipal issues.
Together they have conducted regular clean-up activities, hosted regular soup kitchens for impoverished residents, and mobilised the municipality to fix the broken pump stations and clear illegal dumpsites in the ward. (see pictures here and here)
Garth has proven his commitment to tirelessly fight for basic municipal services to be restored, stamp out any municipal corruption in the ward, and bring clean governance back to Tarkastad so that our residents can once again live lives of dignity.
The people of Tarkastad deserve a champion in the council, a champion backed by the only party that roots out corruption and delivers services to all where it governs.
The DA has been uncovering corruption and fighting for the residents of Enoch Mgijima over the years. We have escalated their plight to the national and provincial governments and proved that we are willing to go to court to save the people from the destructive ANC.
Only the DA can get things done in Tarkastad.
