An academy today is a place of learning or culture.
It is fitting then that the word originated with one of the most influential scholars who ever lived, the Greek philosopher, Plato. During the 4th century BC he taught in a garden in the north western outskirts of Athens called the Akademia, which was named after an ancient hero called Akademos and gave its name to the school Plato founded, known in English as the Academy. Plato’s Academy marked a revolution in ancient Greek education and was the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. It also inspired the creation of Aristotle’s school, which, like the Academy, became a center for scientific research.
At the age of seventeen or eighteen, Aristotle went to study at Plato’s Academy in Athens, where he stayed for twenty years until Plato died in 347 BCE. The Academy trained students in mathematics and rhetoric.
An Academy Award is an OSCAR, It is a statuette awarded annually by the academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Hollywood since 1928 for achievement in various areas of the film industry.
What is the difference between an academy and a college?
In contrast to universities that provide many study programs for various sciences, academies only provide one study program or one branch of science based on their academic name. Academies only have vocational programs up to the Diploma level and does not provide any higher programs.
