Today’s lesson is one from personal experience and, like most lessons in life, begins with the words; “I had a client!”

This particular client ceased to be one around 3 years ago under these circumstances:

When the time came for renewal of his domain name he elected to not do so and rather use social media for his business.

At the time I strongly advised him to not do so and at least hold on to his domain name until circumstances changed and his business picked up again.

As a responsible citizen I warned him about the real possibility that his domain name would be snatched up by a domain trader and held for resale to someone else OR even back to him at a later stage and at a much higher price.

I even offered a lower priced and specced hosting package, but, to no avail.

Predictably circumstances changed:

His products are selling well again and he is not getting the right return from using Social Media as his business web site so he got hold of a friend in web development to resurrect his old web site under his present business name.

Said friend discovered that the domain name that was originally registered and subsequently lost to a different registrant is now not available.

So, former client gives said friend my details so that they can ‘solve this issue’.

Ordinarily that would be fine as I love to share my knowledge with people, BUT, the manner in which they tried to get hold of me beggars belief.

Picture this – I am hard at work editing and my screen begins pinging with the following: A Facebook Messenger request, a Facebook friend request, a WhatsApp Message, a Phone Call, a WhatsApp Voice Call – all from the same guy within 5 minutes and followed by a WhatsApp message from his web developer friend.

Now when someone does the above it is normally to ask you for money and NOT to offer you business so I decided to leave the messages and not reply for 3 hours.

Eventually when I did reply, Web Developer friend sensed my deep feelings of being harassed for nothing and apologised.

What my erstwhile friend thinks is unknown at this time as he has been blocked, deleted and scrubbed from communicating with me.

And the upshot of that poor decision to not renew the domain name and go to Social Media? Well, it is going to cost my erstwhile friend and client a lot of money to secure his domain of choice. Like around 30 times more than the annual fees he would have paid for the last 3 years.

And the TWO lessons learned?

1. Don’t give up your business domain at all
2. When asking someone for assistance DO NOT begin your journey with a full on harrassment episode, rather start with a gentle kiss and not rush to full blown coitus off the bat.

Bitcoin has been around for ages – since 9 January 2009 – and, in internet years, that is a very long time.

Early adopters used to bring their miners to work and plug them into their computer workstations USB ports to take advantage of the ’employer electricity and broadband’.

As the market matured the miners became more sophisticated, higher powered and the technology race began as the first four year ‘halving’ events began taking place.

Bitcoin had a price of zero when it was introduced in 2009. Its price jumped from its long-held level of $0.10 to $0.20 on Oct. 26, 2010. Before the year had closed out, it had reached $0.30.

Bitcoin hit a record high on Monday, 11 March 2024 above $72,000, as the biggest cryptocurrency’s surge showed no signs of slowing down.

On 13 March 2024 One Bitcoin cost R1 347 643.27. If you had invested $30 in Bitcoin in 2010 that would be worth $2 164 221 or R40 371 919.59 today.

The next step in ‘legitimising’ Bitcoin is it’s adoption by Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) as ETFs are allowed to hold bitcoin. ETFs are a convenient way for ordinary investors to get exposure to the price movements of Bitcoin out of their regular brokerage accounts. Almost like investing in Unit Trusts.

In 2024, not only have we seen the approval of Bitcoin ETFs, but Bitcoin has scheduled a halving event for next month. For Bitcoin, the “halving” happens every four years and it means that Bitcoin miners get rewarded half what they got before, which tends to push up the value. The halving will happen on April 20 and it will reduce miner rewards from 6.25 to 3.125 bitcoin.

The latest surveys of Bitcoin ownership show that governments have also entered the market. The US government now owns around 215 000 Bitcoins and the Chinese government a little under 200 000. That makes them among the largest single owners of Bitcoins. The UK and Germany are also up there. This big jump in government Bitcoin ownership only happened at the start of the year. Then, governments owned 90 000 bitcoins, but now they collectively own about 566 000 – it is not clear just how many of those coins are the result of seizures from fraudulent activity, though.

Lake Farm Centre celebrated the 29th edition of their annual Charity Run fundraiser in perfect weather conditions on Saturday, 9 March. Proudly sponsored by Bukani Print, Pam Golding Properties, Investec, and Kingfisher FM. Race Organisers, Nedbank Running Club, and Lake Farm Centre were happy with the support of the event, which doubled from last year with nearly 900 runners enjoying the three road distances, 5km, 10km and 25km on Saturday.

“We are thrilled with the response this year, and would like to thank all the runners, suppliers and sponsors who made this fundraiser possible,” said Lake Farm Centre General Manager, Amelia Laubscher.

“This year Lake Farm Centre dedicated the 25km Endurance Challenge to honour Ralph Kordes, local former world class athlete who is now coping with dementia.

“Rolf Kordes, an esteemed Duathlon athlete, Ironman, Comrades and Two Oceans athlete, used this Lake Farm 25km route for most of his training runs.

“Rolf, now 83, was at the Lake Farm Charity Runs to start the races and we are confident that this event will grow in support next year,” added Laubscher.

Runners, and their friends and families, enjoyed Lake Farm Centre’s famous Coffee Shop’s bakery and frozen foods, including scones & cream, Mastertons Coffee, pancakes and boerewors rolls.

The Saturday events were rounded up by Gareth Burley, with a prize giving and lucky draw.

Well known local top athlete, Melikhaya Frans, of Ikhamva athletics club, won the 25km in an excellent time of 1.26.55, closely followed by training partner, Thabang Mosiako, of Nedbank running club, in 1.27.03. Ross Barnard of Hollywood Bets, finished in third position in 1.29.34.

Kayla Nell, of Charlo athletics club, who won the 10km last year, won the 25km with a comfortable lead in 1.49.31. Theresa Buchner, of 32Gi athletics club, finished second in 2.06.01, with Sitha Sigenu, of Vukani running club, in third position in a time of 2.08.24.

Andile Motwana of Nedbank running club won the 10km run on Saturday, in a time of 0.32.18. He was followed by team-mate, Sibahle Maqwara, in second position, in 0.33.13, with Mzwanele Maphekula, of Ikhamva athletics club, finishing third in 0.34.54.

Leigh Callaghan of Achilles AAA, finished first in a strong time of 0.41.01, Refiloe Solomons, of Nedbank running club, was in second position in 43.27, followed by Inge Williams in third position in a time of 44.37.

Johnye Pullen was the first male to finish the 5km and Kylie Dorfling was the first female runner to finish the 5km. This year the Lake Farm Centre celebrates 64 years of providing a loving home and work place for intellectually challenged residents from the Eastern Cape. The goal of the Charity Run is to raise much-needed funds and create awareness for Lake Farm Centre.

Lake Farm Centre would like to thank all the visitors this past weekend for making a huge difference with their fundraising support.

After a challenging Track and Field season, the EPA Championships was a great success this past weekend.

The EPA Championships, which form part of the NMB Legacy Project sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, attracted an impressive 330 athletes, aged between 12 to 73, participating in 535 events.

“Due to ongoing protests at the University, we had to move our flagship competition from the NMU Madibaz stadium last Thursday to the Westbourne Oval, and change our program to a one day championship on Saturday, 2 March, reported EP Athletics Track & Field Chairperson, Riaan Barnard.

“We did not have an electronic timing system or wind meters, but our local organizing committee rose to the occasion and delivered the best Championship seen in a number of years.

“I want to especially thank our Technical Officials under the leadership of Esteleen Hawkins and Melana Gerber who went beyond the call of duty working a 12 hour shift, to ensure accurate results.

“Our supporters were also amazing, showing their appreciation of every competition. “It is clear that our local athletes, despite the venue change, gave their best and showed us all that they are ready to represent EPA at the ASA Championships which start later this month, added Barnard.

The EPA Championships started with 20 men competing in the 5000m men’s and Thabang Mosiako, running for Nedbank running club, finishing in a brilliant time of 13min 48seconds (hand time). With the Masters supporting the EPA Championships even the President of EPA, Sticks Stiglingh, was competing.

Other highlight performances were in the Long jump competition with Nikithemba Hani (Varsity College) Senior reaching 7.68m, and the Tripple jump competition, with Kayden Thoresson (Framesby High School) u/16 who reached 13.49m and Mia Vermaak (ACT Club) U/18 who reached 10.75m.

With the typical PE wind at play the athletes enjoyed some excellent results in the 100m for seniors with Sherwin van Staden (Madibaz)finishing in 10.1s, closely followed by Mondray Barnard (Heat Club) in 10.2s and Marko Ferreira (Daniel Pienaar high school) U/18 in 10.13s. Chelsea Street (Heat Club) u/18 finished the 100m in 11.86s to outrun her competition, and Kenan Adams (Heat club) u/20 finished in 10.51s proving that they are ready for SA Champs.

The highlight of the Hammer throw competition was when Elme Botha (Madibaz) broke her own previous EPA record for the senior women from 52.8m to 58.8m.

The Hurdlers had to struggle with the wind blowing the hurdles over but still kept a positive attitude and preformed way better than expected. Outstanding performances were achieved by Tiaan Vosloo (Daniel Pienaar) U/16, finishing 100m hurdles in 14.0s, whilst in the 110m hurdles, Gerhard van Graag (Middleburg High School) u/18, finished in 14.5s and Senior athlete, Mondray Barnard (Heat Club) finished in 13.93s.

Wiehan Maree (Varsity College) and Joshua Napoleon (Nico Malan High School) pushed each other to new heights competing in the 800m. Wiehan just had enough strength to beat Joshua to the finish in a personal best time of 1min 54 seconds with Joshua finishing in 1min 55. Matsolo Thandolwethu (Kowie Striders) ran an excellent 1500m in 4 min 10seconds.

“With so many strong achievements it’s really difficult to highlight them all, but overall I am extremely excited to see how our athletes will perform at the SA Championships this year and wish them everything of the best.

“The selectors are hard at work behind the scenes and the athletes who qualified to represent EPA at the ASA championships will be announced later this week”, confirmed Barnard.

The National Athletic Championship which will be held in Pretoria on the 21-23 March for our junior athletes and u/23 (a new category) and our seniors will compete from 18-21 April in KZN Durban.

Having water flow freely is essential, and a prepaid water meter with an error code can be frustrating. If you’re facing “Error 017” on your water meter display, don’t panic! This article explains what this error signifies, how to potentially fix it, and where to find more information about prepaid water meter error codes.

Understanding Error 017

Error 017 indicates a problem with the token you tried to use. The meter couldn’t decrypt the token successfully, meaning it couldn’t verify its authenticity or extract the credit information.

This can happen for a few reasons:

• Corrupted Token: The token itself might be damaged or faulty due to handling or storage issues.
• Communication Error: There could be a temporary glitch in communication between the token and the meter’s reader.
• KRN Error: Should you have a main prepaid electricity, water or gas meter in your home it may have to be ‘recoded’ in order to continue dispensing electricity, water or gas after November 2024. Read more about how to fix this KRN Error at the Straton Prepaid online shop.

Here’s what you can do to try resolve Error 017:

• Try Again: Sometimes, a simple retry can work. Take out the token, re-insert it firmly, and wait for the meter to read it.
• Check the Token: Inspect the token for any physical damage like scratches or bends. If it appears faulty, contact your water supplier for a replacement.
• Clean the Reader: Gently clean the token reader slot on the meter with a dry, soft cloth to remove any dust or debris that might be causing a reading issue.

If these steps don’t resolve the error, contact your water supplier. They can provide further assistance, diagnose the problem, and potentially reset the meter if necessary.
