Although it occupies only .04% of the earth’s dry land, it boasts greater plant diversity than the whole rest of the world combined.
This beautiful floral kingdom called Fynbos borders the cold waters of the Atlantic on the west and the more temperate waters of the Indian Ocean on the east.
There haven’t been any glaciers here for the last 115 million years. This climatic stability is one of the reasons for so many forms of vegetation.
Small but diverse, the Cape Town Floral Kingdom includes over 8,500 species of flowering plants.
While the favourable climate prevented the disappearance of many species for millions of years, many are now nearly extinct after just half a century of contact with humans…
Not even the plants are exempt! Some 1,400 plant species are threatened. The animals of the Cape Town also suffered after the arrival of the Europeans. The cuagga zebra and the bluebuck antelope, for example, are both extinct.
Some plant species of this floral kingdom are slowly recovering. Their last living examples survive in the area’s national parks.
The smallest and rarest of the African zebras is the South African mountain zebra. It too escaped extinction in Mountain Zebra National Park… when only 13 individuals were left.
While the blesbok is the most common variety in Cape Town South Africa, the bontebok has always been rather rare here.
It seems that every species is a biological rarity in this small but impressive park.
President Mandela declared it a national park in 1998. No other animal sanctuary in the world has greater biological diversity.
The world’s smallest and most diverse plant kingdom is now protected. This is a source of hope for hundreds of species (and botanists).
