THE COMMON, OR FRESH-WATER CRAW-FISH. Craw-fish are found in many rivers, edged in holes whic^» theyform in tlie clayey banks; and their presence is generally esteemed anevidence of the goodness of the water. They are frequently caught bysticks split at the end, with a bait inserted in the cleft, and stuck in the 558 THE GREAT CENTIPEDE. mud at the distance of a few feet from eacli other. These sticks, afterremaining some time, are taken up, and generally with an animaladhering to each. They are gently drawn out, and a basket is putunder to receive the animals, which drop off when brought to the surface.
