Tough gelding, Shot Putt has been awarded the Central District’s Racing Association (CDRA) ‘Horse Of The Year’ title for the 2011 – 2012 season.
A 12 person panel drawn from throughout the region met at Dubbo last week to judge the award.
From an original field of seven, Shot Putt, Izababe and Platinum Skye were selected as the finalists.
Subsequently, Shot Putt took the title with nine votes while Izababe received three votes.
Trained at Cowra by Kevin White, Shot Putt is raced by Kevin White, Jenny White, Todd White, Barry Wall, Steve Mason, Belinda Green and Paul Cradock, all from Cowra and was bred by Dr Cradock.
During the season, Shot Putt had an incredible 27 starts, reading eight wins and six placings.
Shot Putt won TAB races at Wagga Wagga, Parkes, Wellington (twice) and Hawkesbury while winning non-TAB races at Gilgandra (Harry McKechnie Cup), Grenfell and the Condobolin Picninc Cup.
Shot Putt and Hawkesbury trained, Drop Of Magic with eight wins each won the most races in NSW for the season while Shot Putt with five wins won the most races in the CDRA region.
Trained at Dubbo by Peter Nestor, Izababe only had five starts for the season but proved to be a quality galloper.
Izababe won the Dubbo Cup, Coonabarabran Cup and the Bengalla Cup at Musswellbrook.
Brilliant sprinter, Platinum Skye trained at Parkes by Sharon Jeffries had six starts for the season.
Platinum Skye won the Harvey Norman Cup Day Sprint at Coonamble, a 1000 metre sprint on the Randwick inside track and the Thunderbolt at Queanbeyan.
Platinum Skye also finished second in the Flat Knacker at Albury and third in the Scone Quality.
The other CDRA trained horses considered for the award were Jali (trainer Mark Wilton, Gulgong), True Jeune (Peter W. Stanley, Orange), Nuisance (Fred Heanes, Bathurst) and Snowy On The Tram (Terry Fahey, Dubbo).
Presentation of the award will take place at an upcoming meeting (date to be announced).
