forced march. We are headed in the direction of Valley Forge, and arrive at thisland of desolation late in the afternoon where we remain over nightand retire to our couches on the bare, frozen ground rolled up inovercoats and blankets, then pass to peaceful slumber while gazing atthe starry heavens. The bugle calls at the usual early hour on March 10. Thenorders are sent to Chef Schaffer for quail on toast, hot biscuit, pancakes, and maple syrup, ham and eggs, etc. But Schaffer turnsdown these orders, so we are content with plain coffee, hardtack, and bacon, then continue the march until a late hour and put upat another hotel run on the army plan where all secure quarters onthe first floor. At 10 oclock on the following morning we reachMossy Creek, Tenn., and go into camp. MOSSY CREEK, TENNESSEE. At this camp Simon P. Conrad, of Paris township, is detailedfor guard duty on the ammunition train where he remains untilthe close of the war, after eighteen months service with the com-pany. 84

Nick is missed in the ranks. He has a habit of taking the nega-tive side of questions raised by the oracles, thus prolonging thesearguments. A thorn to the flesh is Nick, forever throwing ice wateron our hopes of an early close to the war, an event we are hopingand longing for and often discuss in our travels. When Nick de-veloped into manhood he did a poor job in changing his voice andseemed to lose control of it. When under pressure of excitementhis voice leaves the grade and soars skyward and as quickly de-scends to a deep bass when the pressure is relieved. Considerablediscussion is carried on at times over the meaning of the termsunder which we enlisted, namely: Three years or during the war,u

At half-pastfive she stopped with a heavy list to starboard, though here and therea gun still fired at times. Carnarvon, who had now arrived, Invincibleand Inflexible closed on her, and at six oclock, with her colours stillflying, she turned turtle and sank. The three British ships immediatelyset about rescuing survivors—and then went back to harbour tocomplete coaling, having removed from the face of the seas the terrorsof the Pacific. Meanwhile, Cornwall and Glasgow had dealt faithfully with Leipzig, sinking her, while Kent had done the same for Niirnberg. Out of thefive ships that fought Cradock only one now was left, hunted, a fugitive,to join the elusive Karlsruhe in being the only German surface warshipsoutside the Kiel Canal. So ended the power of Germany in the Pacific,so were avenged Cradock and his gallants, and, his task accomplished,Sturdee brought home his squadron to divide themselves once morein the places where they belonged, and where there was still work tobe done.

CHAPTER XVIIITHE BATTLE OF DOGGER BANK DURING the early days of the war, the German Navy did itsbest to bring liome the war to the people who inhabited ourEast Coast towns. At carefully selected intervals certainheavy ships would dash out of their hiding places in the mouths ofthe Rivers Ems and Weser, and, racing across the North Sea, fireshells into any undefended to^\Ti they happened to strike. The Hartlepools and Scarborough suffered rather badly in oneof these raids, and on January 24th, 1915, Yarmouth was subjectedto bombardment by a fast battle-cruiser squadron. It so happened, however, that on this occasion Vice-AdmiralBeatty was patrolling the North Sea, and when at 7.30 in the morn-ing the flash of guns was observed to the south-west of his position,he immediately worked his fleet up to full speed, ordering his lightcioiisers to go ahead and reconnoitre.
