The Dras \allfv. 73 there is no fertility, no greenness or pleasantness in the land, nothingbut the absolute and horrible desolation of the Caucasian mountains,which stretch all that way and which the geographers call dorsum orbis.^Padre Desideri went no farther than Leh, which is only fourteen orfifteen marches from Zoji La ; but the horrible desolation of themountains stretches over the whole of Baltistan and the neighbouringcountries of Gilgit and Astor to the west and Ladakh to the south-east—in other words, the whole of the region lying to the north of the westernHimalaya.
