CALNE Eagles dominated the Trowbridge District League’s awards night at Trowbridge’s Wesley Road club on Tuesday.

The club claimed three major awards, Sophie Wootton signing off her three-year stint as Eagles club secretary by scooping the secretary of the year accolade.

Wootton has been a key member of the club for a number of years, from supporter to secretary.

Also a qualified referee, she won the second division linesman of the year award in 2010 and 2011. Roy Wenham, manager of the beaten Division Two cup finalists claimed the club correspondent award.

Wenham received a trophy and a cheque for £30 for his match reporting efforts over the season, submitting a report on his team’s matches every week.

Eagles also claimed the Dudley Cradock Sportsmanship Cup with a superb average of 90.00 from their 18 league matches, receiving a cheque for £100.

For the third successive season, Steeple Ashton topped Division One’s sportsmanship table, Bradford United Reserves claiming the third division prize as their first team were runners up in the top
flight behind Ashton.

Worton Cheverell and Westwood Social Club were runners up in Divisions Two and Three respectively. Castle Combe (One), Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves (Two) and Polenez Westbury (Three)
finished third in their division’s fair play standings. The new season will kick off on September 1 with 34 teams contesting three divisions.

Newly-promoted Boomsbury will be one of the favourites for the Division One title, along with champions Trowbridge Wanderers and Freshford United, runners-up in the last two seasons.

Division Three welcomes five new sides, Lacock FC, Levi’s FC, Leece FC, Trowbridge Rangers and Trowbridge Town Reserves.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting it was confirmed that Trowbridge Windows and Conservatories will continuing their sponsorship of the league for the 2012/13 campaign.

Meanwhile, FC Northbridge have merged with Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves to stop them from going out of existence.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) Funeral services are scheduled Wednesday in Portsmouth for an assistant leader of a Boy Scouts of America troop who drowned during a camping trip.

Family members tell media outlets that 70-year-old Bob Bracy apparently slipped while walking on a sandbar and went under water. Rescuers found his body about two hours later.

The accident occurred Saturday afternoon at Buggs Island Lake in Mecklenburg County.

Bracy was an assistant leader of Cradock Troop 223 and a retired Virginia Port Authority police officer.

His daughter-in-law, Teena Anderson, says Bracy had been a scout leader since he was 21.

The funeral is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Cradock Baptist Church.

Scout leader drowns at Buggs Island

An assistant leader of the Boy Scouts of America Cradock Troop 223 died in a drowning accident Saturday at Buggs Island Lake.

According to Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Administrative Assistant Deborah R. Clark, deputies responded to the Boy Scout Camp near Eagle Point on Buggs Island Lake regarding a drowning at 2:35 p.m. Saturday.  

The victim, Bobby Bracy, was on a camping trip and apparently slipped while walking on a sandbar and went under water, Clark said. 

Upon arrival, deputies found several individuals in the water attempting to locate the drowning victim, the sheriff’s office spokesperson said.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office dive team and the Lake Gaston dive team responded to the scene and recovered the victim’s body.

A Scout leader who was a lifelong resident of the Portsmouth area drowned Saturday while on a camping trip in Mecklenburg County.

Bobby Bracy, 70, appeared to lose his footing while walking across a sandbar in Buggs Island Lake to join members of Cradock Troop 233, according to his daughter-in-law, Teena Anderson. The troop had been working on swimming merit badges earlier that day.

The boys searched for him until the troop leaders insisted they stop out of fear of another tragedy, Anderson said. Bracy’s body was found two hours later.

“Those kids did not want to give up,” Anderson said.

Bracy, a retired police officer with the Virginia Port Authority, had been a scout leader since he was 21. He went on camping trips at least once a month and was an ardent believer in the value of survival skills, according to Anderson.

He was also a proficient swimmer, Anderson said. The family suspects a medical emergency caused him to go underwater, she said.

Anderson said her father-in-law had recently received a clean bill of health from a cardiologist and had not complained of any medical concerns.

“But even if he had, he still would have gone camping.”

The funeral is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Cradock Baptist Church.

DUMP TRUCK FATAL

Dump truck rolls over, kills Va. woman

BOONES MILL, Va. (AP) – Virginia State Police are investigating the death of a Boones Mill woman who was struck and killed by a dump truck.

State police tell media outlets that 74-year-old Charlotte Clemons Pate was standing behind a 1970 GMC dump truck when it rolled backward and ran over her. Pate was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police haven’t determined whether the vehicle was in gear.

The accident occurred around 2 p.m. Sunday at a residence in Boones Mill.

METRO-NEW CARS

Metro to stretch fleet for Silver Line’s opening

WASHINGTON (AP) – Metro faces competing demands as it replaces its oldest rail cars while expanding its fleet to cover demands of the new Silver Line when it opens.

The Washington Examiner reports the transit agency plans to tackle both challenges at once.

Metro is paying $886 million for Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. to build 428 new cars. That includes 128 for the Silver Line and 300 to replace old 1000-series rail cars. But they have been delayed following the Japanese earthquake. Only a few will arrive by the Silver Line’s opening in late 2013 or early 2014.

Metro says it will rely on its existing fleet to open the Silver Line.

But there are fewer cars in the mix as Metro retires some 1000-series cars that have been deemed less safe.

BRIDGE JUMP

Man jumps off Va. bridge to avoid being hit by car

PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (AP) – A man is recovering from injuries suffered when he jumped off a bridge in Prince George County to avoid being hit by a car.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning on the Frederick Gray Bridge on Interstate 295.

Emergency officials tell media outlets that the unidentified man was working on his disabled car when several other vehicles collided near him. He jumped 75 to 100 feet into a ravine to avoid being struck.

A second person was injured in the wreck. Both victims were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Virginia State Police are investigating.

DIGITAL DRIVE-IN

Lexington drive-in theater going digital

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) – A 1950s-style drive-in theater in Lexington is turning to 21st century technology so it can remain relevant in today’s digital world.

Hull’s Drive-In Theatre is replacing its 35-millimeter film projector with a digital projection system. The first digital movies will be played Friday.

Hull’s executive director Maggi George tells The Roanoke Times that the digital conversion is necessary because Hollywood plans to stop production of 35-millimeter film. She says the conversion will cost nearly $100,000.

Community support and fundraising by the volunteer organization Hull’s Angels provided much of the money.

Projectionist Jeremy Reter says he hopes the old film projector will be put on display somewhere in Lexington.

GREENBRIER-WINTERGREEN

Members OK Wintergreen resort sale to Jim Justice

WINTERGREEN, Va. (AP) – Wintergreen Partners Inc. members have approved the $16.5 million sale of the Virginia resort to Jim Justice.

The Daily Progress reports that members voted 1,219 to 21 on Sunday to approve Justice’s acquisition of Wintergreen Resort.

Justice also owns The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia.

Justice will pay $2.5 million in member consideration and $14 million at closing.

Wintergreen attorney Dion Hayes says the deal will be good both for Wintergreen and Central Virginia’s economy.

Wintergreen encountered financial problems earlier this year because of a mild winter, the loss of its $3 million line of credit with Bank of America and a now-settled tax-credit dispute with the state.

TEACHER ACQUITTED-SETTLEMENT

Fairfax to pay falsely accused teacher $73,000

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) – The Fairfax County school board has agreed to pay nearly $73,000 to a popular gym teacher who was falsely accused and acquitted of molesting a 12-year-old girl.

The school board agreed in a closed session Thursday to cover Sean Lanigan’s legal fees that were not already paid by his union’s insurance policy. Lanigan had sued the school board for reimbursement of his legal fees, and a trial date was approaching.

The 45-year-old teacher spent about $125,000 defending himself against two felony sex abuse charges in 2010.

Under state law, state or county employees cleared of criminal charges can seek to recover legal fees. Lanigan first sought about $108,000 in 2010, but the board offered him $60,000 after eight months. Lanigan sued for the full amount.

CARMAX-ANNUAL MEETING

CarMax to hold annual shareholder meeting in Va

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Used car dealership chain CarMax is set to hold its annual shareholder meeting in Virginia.

The Richmond-based company’s gathering is scheduled for Monday afternoon in suburban Richmond.

CarMax runs more than 110 stores in 56 markets that mainly sell used cars and trucks.

The company has seen its performance improve as a result of sales increases, cost-cutting efforts and gains from its financing division. But low consumer confidence, tighter lending standards and high unemployment have hindered the industry’s recovery.

Last week, the company said its fiscal first-quarter net income rose 25% as revenue at stores open at least a year rose 6%. In the last fiscal year, CarMax saw its net income rise 10% and its revenue grow 11%.

ONLINE GED TESTING

2 Va counties to offer online GED testing

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Two Virginia school divisions will be the first in the state to offer online general educational development testing.

The Virginia Department of Education says Chesterfield and Augusta counties will offer the computer-based testing for adult learners seeking the high school credential beginning this week.

The test developed by the American Council on Education allows adults who have not graduated from high school to demonstrate knowledge typically associated with completion of a high school program of study. The five content areas are: reading, writing, social studies, science and mathematics.

Officials say that while paper tests will continue to be offered, the online tests are being piloted at these two locations in anticipation of 2014 when the computer-based format will be the only option for testing.

COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG-ARCHITECTURE GIFT

Va historic area gets $2M architecture gift

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) – The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation says it has received a $2 million gift to support its historic architecture preservation efforts.

The historic area received the gift from The Grainger Foundation. The Illinois-based foundation was established in 1949 and has been 1 of Colonial Williamsburg’s most generous benefactors.

Officials say the gift will provide initial endowment funding for Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Architectural Resources Department. The funds will pay for staffing, projects, equipment and training.

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation CEO Colin G. Campbell says the gift provides critical funding as it seeks to meet its obligation to preserve the restored colonial capital for generations to come.

The foundation operates and maintains the preserved 18th century site as an educational and tourist venue.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A long-time Boy Scout elder from Cradock drowned Saturday while on a weekend camping trip to Eagle Point in Mecklenburg County.

Family members told WAVY.com 70-year-old Bobby Bracy went under water while wading to a sandbar in Buggs Island Lake around 1 p.m. Family said they believed he slipped and went under the water.

Bracy served as an elder with Troop 233, a troop he worked with for decades. They said his death has hit the entire scouting community.

Bracy loved the outdoors and camping but most of all he loved being a role model to hundred of boys. His children and grandchildren have followed in his footsteps and are just as involved in Scouting.

Family members said Bracy would go on a scouting trip at least one weekend every month.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed 2012, also sees the launch of the award winning two-cylinder TwinAir engine in the Alfa MiTo. The introduction of this engine into the Alfa MiTo range reinforces the image of the MiTo as a high-tech, sporty, compact car offering maximum driving pleasure.  The engine guarantees a great level of responsiveness and agility thanks to its 85 bhp at 5,500 rpm, and 145 Nm of torque.  The resultant performance comes together with a significant reduction in emissions – just 98g/km of CO₂.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed runs from 28 June to 1 July 2012.

The prevailing market conditions showed that tea production in South Africa was “unsustainable,â€? the Agriculture and Rural Development Portfolio Committee has told the Bhisho Legislature.

In a report on the budget of the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform the committee says that this implies that “the department’s continued funding of both the Majola and Magwa tea estates is unsustainable�.

The report says that the manner in which Magwa continues to be funded constitutes “fruitless and wasteful expenditure�.

The committee has also expressed concern about the department’s participation in the multi-million Rand Cradock ethanol bio-fuels project.

The department’s participation in the project, it says, is in “jeopardy� because of the difficulties it is experiencing in raising its 16% stake that is worth R184 million.

The Industrial Development Corporation set April 20 as the deadline by which the department should have raised the funds.

The committee says it wants a report within 30 days on how the department plans to raise the R184 million.

The committee has also expressed concern about the fact that 80% of the department’s budget is used for compensation of employees “at the expense of goods and services�.

The result of this, it says, is “a negative effect on animal health and livestock improvement�.

In addition, it states, tick-borne diseases are destroying rural livestock, especially those in coastal areas “because of the ineffectiveness of medication supplied by the department to communities�.

The committee said it wants a report from the department within 30 days on how it planned to address this challenge.

The committee also criticised the department for what it described as “the poor relations� it had with organised stakeholders in the farming sector saying this needed to improve.

PORTSMOUTH– Police have arrested a Portsmouth man for car break-ins with the help of some alert residents.

On  May 23rd in the early morning hours,  a number of vehicles parked in the West Cradock section of the city were broken into and ransacked.  Most of the vehicles were unlocked. 

One victim reported a rear window had been broken.  

As word filtered through the neighborhood that someone was entering vehicles and taking items, the residents became more alert and watchful.  Several sightings of a suspicious white male walking through the area were reported to police. 

Officers conducted field interviews in the neighborhood in an attempt to find the person responsible for tampering with the vehicles.  

Some of the residents used their cellular telephones to video suspicious people in the area.  Those recordings were turned over to detectives in the Property Crimes Unit.  Using the recordings and the data obtained in the officer’s field interviews, police were able to arrest Everson John Wood, 20,  of the 3200 block of Scott Street.

Wood has been charged with grand larceny, two counts of tampering with an auto, and third offense larceny in two of the cases. Other charges are pending. 

The investigation is ongoing and detectives have additional evidence to review.

A STAR guitarist best known as a member of Ocean Colour Scene and for working with Paul Weller is to play a gig in Greenock.

Promoters The Beatclub have today announced that Steve Cradock, right, will play Word Up on Sunday 5 August in what is another huge coup for the area’s buzzing music scene.

The OCS and Paul Weller guitarist will play an acoustic gig along with some special guests who will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Beatclub’s Andrew McDermid said: “Ocean Colour Scene are no strangers to Greenock so Steve is really looking forward to the show.

“We will be announcing some special guests over the next few weeks as well.”

Cradock was born in Birmingham and grew up listening to legends like The Who.

His first band, The Boys, were a ferocious power-pop outfit at the very start of the Mod scene.

Inspired by the The Stone Roses, his next band was none other than Ocean Colour Scene – formed with ex-Fanatics singer Simon Fowler.

Within a year and with Steve still just 20, OCS were leading the way for a new wave of bands.

Cradock was recruited by Paul Weller for his band in 1993 and the guitarist’s infectious enthusiasm soon kick-started OCS back into life with a number of top 20 hits.

OCS album ‘Marchin’ Already’ also famously knocked Oasis’ ‘Be Here Now’ off the number one spot and later earned them a place at Oasis’s Knebworth mega-gig in 1996.

Following the closure of Greenock music and ticket outlet Rhythmic Records, Adlib has stepped in to sell tickets for a variety of events locally and beyond.

Andrew added: “The closure of Rhythmic has been a real blow for us. Fortunately Adlib have agreed to be a ticket outlet for gigs.”

Tickets are priced 15 but Adlib have a limited number of early bird tickets on sale for 12.50, plus booking fee. These will be on sale from Saturday morning.

South African filmmakers Sara Blecher and David Forbes have just returned from screening their films in Moscow in the Russian Federation. The four-day festival of South African films from 17 to 20 May was the third festival organised by the South African Embassy in Moscow, but the first time filmmakers were invited as guests.

Screened at the oldest cinema in Moscow, the famous Khudozhestvenny artistic cinema hall (a 10-minute walk from the Kremlin), nine films were shown over four days.

The festival opened with Jann Turners comedy White Wedding, which drew an audience of more than 550 people and, according to the cinema, was the largest audience ever for a foreign language film.

At a press conference before the opening cocktail party on 17 May, SA Ambassador Mandisi Mpahlwa, (the former minister of trade and industry who signed off on the Film and Television Production Incentive scheme), said the festival was an opportunity to promote cultural co-operation and people-to-people ties between South Africa and its strategic and BRICS partner, the Russian Federation.

Russian news agency TASS described the festival thus: The feature films, documentaries and short films will provide an insight into South Africas rich cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as political history and contemporary socio-economic conditions.

Ambassador Mpahlwa introduced Blecher and Forbes, expressing his hope that their numerous meetings in Moscow would result in an exchange of movies or possible commercial deals. The filmmakers then each gave a short introduction of their work, and answered questions.

I hope that the festival will become a bright occasion for continuing the dialogue between our peoples and cultures, and also that it will make it possible to learn more about each other, said Blecher, who presented two films about life after apartheid. Its heroes the youth for whom the surfing on the roofs of trains was an expression of social reality.

Ambassador Mpahlwa noted: We hope the festival . . . will become the basis for the development and strengthening of further cultural collaboration between the peoples of Republic of South Africa and Russia.

Since South Africa joined the BRICS group of countries, our embassy has noted a significant increase in interest in South Africa, not only by the Russian government and business, but also by a wider Russian audience. This film festival is a unique possibility to showcase the rich cultural variety of our country, its stormy history and our passage to peaceful democracy, based on the respect of human rights.

Both Forbes and Blecher said their screenings had gone very well, with many interesting questions being asked afterwards. The films were each screened in their own languages, sometimes with subtitles, or with a translator reading a commentary in Russian. The films were widely listed in local media, including Nat Geo Russia, Time Out Russia, student and other mass media.

Other films shown were: Faith Like Potatoes director Regardt van den Berg (2006), Nothing But The Truth by director John Kani (2008), Otelo Burning (2011) and Surfing Soweto (2010) by director Sara Blecher, Mama Africa (2011) by director Mick Kaurismki, The Cradock Four by director David Forbes (2010), An Old Wives Tale by director Dumisani Phakati and Dirty Laundry by director Steven Abbott.

The Marian Finucane media panel pulls off a major stroke of myopia. It discusses Greece without a single reference to Pat Cradock’s powerful piece in this paper.

Considering that Cradock is a former Irish ambassador to Greece, lives in Athens and writes assertively, Finucane should have marked the panel’s cards C minus.

Dr Gavan Titley, lecturer in the Centre for Media Studies, Maynooth, gives the nod to his PC peers by ignoring the Sunday Independent but pulling the forelock to two posh British papers. “There are two excellent pieces, one is in the Sunday Times, which is a two-page spread on the great euro crisis. And then there is a very interesting piece in the Observer by Peter Beaumont on what he calls the new insurgents, Europe’s rebel leaders who are spurning the era of bling. It’s a really interesting piece.”

So, so, much more interesting than the insights of a former Irish ambassador to Greece in the Sunday Independent. But that failure, which seemed to me pretentious, was not Titley’s only omission of a chance to raise Irish issues of moment. Most media lecturers seize every chance to mention the concentration of media power in the hands of moguls like Murdoch.

But Titley showed no interest in raising the impending concentration of media power in Ireland — with the full connivance of Fine Gael and the Labour Party. Maybe he will get around to it on his next outing. Which will be soon, as Titley is easily the most effective left-wing contributor in the long list of leftie lecturers who clog up the Pat Kenny and Vincent Browne shows.

Here I must declare an interest. Gavan Titley is marginally a better media communicator than his father, Professor Alan Titley, professor of modern Irish in UCC. Alan is the only person I know who can give me a run for my money on a public platform. That means Gavan Titley is good.

MONDAy

Sean Foley, who runs Foley’s Restaurant in Merrion Row, sends an email thanking those who supported him in the recent row with Raymond Deane and the Irish Palestinian Solidarity Campaign. Let me bring you up to speed on this — and point you towards a rather good pie.

Foley’s normally flies the flag of countries celebrating special days. On April 30 last, when Israel’s Independence Day was being celebrated in Dublin, Foley bravely flew the blue-and-white Star of David flag of Israel. Actually, the bravery part came when he continued to fly it after pressure from Raymond Deane and the Irish Palestinian Solidarity Campaign to stop.

Foley had no firm position on Israel until the row broke out. But he swiftly brought himself up to speed. As a result of his reading and reflections, he decided to take a leaf from Israel’s book and run his own place as he saw fit. Consequently the Israeli flag now flies permanently over his pub.

Summing up his educative experience, Foley said: “I’m sure it can be quite disheartening for Israeli people around the world, to have to listen to biased rhetoric from others.”

So much for the politics. Now for the pie. Foley’s serves a mouthwatering Oxtail and Mushroom pie. That’s not all it serves, but that’s the one that hits my spot.

TUESDay

Senator John Whelan was the star of the Oireachtas Committee which reviewed Mission to Prey. He poked RTE chairman Tom Savage with a three-pronged trident: alleging a pre-emptive strike, conflict of interest and consensus thinking in RTE. And he drew blood.

Senator Paschal Mooney professed surprise at the level of hostility to RTE. But not all the animus was aimed at RTE. The Communications Clinic, which Tom Savage

co-founded with Terry Prone, also contributed to the aggro because it is widely perceived to be part of a cosy circle of political and media influence.

Terry Prone is part of Enda Kenny’s “kitchen cabinet”. She is also a regular contributor on media affairs to RTE radio shows like Pat Kenny — where her link with the other Kenny is not always pointed up as acutely as it should be. But I doubt she will be on Pat Kenny this week discussing the perceived conflict of interest which bothers Senator Whelan.

As The Irish Times remarked later: “The point that Whelan and others were trying to make, of course, was that before he even drives past security at Montrose, there is a de facto conflict of interest between Savage’s commercial interest and his public role.”

WEDNESDAy

Summer kicks in hot and heavy, trying to make up for lost time. But not even the most seductive sunset can tempt me to miss TG4’s new series. Mo Ghra Sa Daingean with its cast of colourful Dingle characters.

Cast is the correct word. The secret of Dingle, and indeed Kerry, is that its inhabitants are all improvising actors. They don’t mock the maudlin scripts that Irish-Americans bring to Ireland. They just tweak some scenes, add authentic dialogue and send the crowds home smiling.

Meantime RTE is running an unreality show called Mo Ghra Sa Enda. The current marshmallow coverage of Enda Kenny’s whistle-but-don’t-stop tours is careful to whisk him swiftly past the madding crowds. Demoralised by the Fr Reynold’s debacle, RTE television news increasingly fails to bring us full coverage of awkward affairs like Kenny’s Athlone gaffe.

But they face serious competition from the Irish Independent. Fionnan Sheahan’s comment piece today: “Kenny right to hitch a ride on EU growth” is yet another contender for my PCI (Political Colonic Irrigation) prize. But the likely winner is still the front-page headline of Monday, May 14, from the same saccharine stable: “Kenny plans jobs bid to help cash in on EU deal.” I hope Prone called to congratulate them.

THURSDay

The Irish Times headline today “Germany and France at odds as euro falls amid market turmoil” sets me pondering the EU’s major mistake: putting economic projects like the euro ahead of political unity. As I muse I meet John Gormley, who is brilliant on EU affairs.

Gormley reminds me of a prescient remark made 10 years ago by Romano Prodi: “I am sure the euro will oblige us to introduce a new set of economic policy instruments. It is politically impossible to propose that now. But some day there will be a crisis and new instruments will be created.”

That day has dawned. And a grey dawn it is in Ireland. John Gormley’s good sense is sorely missed.

FRIDay

If RTE really wants to change its closed culture it should put Tommie Gorman in charge of a top-level “challenging-the-consensus” project. His reports from Mauritius are a role model for young journalists. He reveals that a great reporter is more than a retailer of raw facts.

Think of the huge canvas he has to cover: a loving honeymoon couple caught in the coils of murder and the media, the mental anguish of the extended family in Ireland, a small tourist island sublimating its shame in incoherent anger against outsiders, and the awful prospect that the McAreaveys may get law but not justice. Tommie Gorman, under pressure, tells that tragic tale with grace.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Portsmouth Police are attributing the arrest of a car larceny suspect to vigilant members of the West Cradock neighborhood.

Police say many vehicles parked in the area were ransacked and stolen from on May 23. As word of this activity spread throughout the community, police say citizens became more watchful.

Jan Westerbeck with Portsmouth Police says citizens reported several sightings of a suspicious white man walking through the area.

Those reports, combined with video recorded on cell phones, led police to believe that 20-year-old Everson John Wood, of the 3200 block of Scott Street was in the neighborhood at the times the vehicles were entered.

Westerbeck says Wood was charged with grand larceny, two counts of tampering with auto and third offense larceny in two of the cases. Wood is also pending additional charges.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Torquay Operatic and Dramatic Society present The Haunting of Hill House until Saturday May 26. Despite warnings about its evil reputation, four visitors, including Eleanor and Theodora, conduct an experiment to investigate the supposedly supernatural occurrences in the remote mansion.

But nothing can prepare them for what lurks in Hill House, because the house is alive with a will and desires of its own. And what it desires most is Eleanor. It all takes place at the Little Theatre in Torquay.

Brit Floyd is a new show celebrating the amazing musical legacy of Pink Floyd. Having performed to more than 50,000 fans in the UK in 2011, Brit Floyd — The World’s Greatest Pink Floyd Show is returning to the UK for a second time to perform a brand new show, A Foot in the Door.

Especially created by Brit Floyd musical director Damian Darlington to celebrate the release of the new, official Pink Floyd best of album, A Foot in the Door, the performance will include all of Pink Floyd’s best work in its entirety and as selected by the Pink Floyd band members themselves.

As an extra bonus, and back by popular demand, Brit Floyd will also include a full, 23-minute show-stopping rendition of Echoes, taken from Pink Floyd’s classic 1971 album, Meddle.

IT’S good to see rockers Rude Tiger are back on the road after a bit of a break during which they have been putting the finishing touches to their long-awaited debut album.

They play in Perranporth, Plymouth and St Agnes over the weekend, with the Plymouth gig at the Live Lounge on the Barbican from 10pm on Saturday. Having been chosen to represent England, the band’s appearance in Romania in the final of the Global Battle of the Bands has been postponed until September due to complications with the organisation. Further in the future, the band play The Attic, Torquay, on Friday, June 1, The Barrel House, Totnes, on Friday, June 22, and The Boathouse Beer and Music Festival in Dawlish Warren on Saturday, June 30.

The Humanitarians are live at Pub Alibi in Plainmoor, Torquay, on Friday May 25 from 8pm.

John Mathew from The Humanitarians performs a solo acoustic gig at the Crown and Sceptre in St Marychurch on Saturday. Starting time is 9pm and John will be playing a mixture of original songs and covers.

AFTER the success of Brixham Folk Club’s regular monthly sessions, the club has joined with Brixham Arts and Theatre Society to stage four larger-scale concerts at Brixham Theatre.

The first folk concert is at 7.30pm on Saturday May 26 and will feature The Mooncoin Ceilidh Band alongside local folk stars Maggie Duffy and Mike Weed.

Described as ‘Brixham’s own Joan Baez’, Maggie Duffy is a singer songwriter who recently made it to the final of www.oldiecomposers.com with her song Peace For The Child, to be sung by Clare Teal.

She has supported the likes of Fairport Convention, The Albion Band, Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham and Sean Cannon as well as recording four CDs.
