THE Crawford House is one of the central shrines in these great moun-tain-cloisters, and is rich in its picturesque and varied surroundings,and the electrically invigorating air of an altitude of nineteen hundredfeet above the sea. From the long front piazzas you look across thebroad lawn, with sparkling fountains, to the sharply-cut Gate of the Notch,formed of the broken slope of Mount Jackson on one side and MountWillard on the other, with the tremendous mass of Mount Webster full insight beyond, a magnificent and imposing spectacle. There are numerous forest-hidden brooks in this vicinity,— the Crawford,Upper Saco, Ammonoosuc, and others, —where fishermen, following downtheir wapvard courses, amid scenery of the wildest and grandest characte
