The African National Congress (ANC) centenary torch has arrived at Beaufort West in the Karoo where it will be handed over by the party’s Secretary-General, Gwede Mantashe, to the provincial leadership. ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe kick-started the celebrations with a rally at Oudtshoorn in the Karoo.
The torch arrived just after midnight in a motorcade from Mangaung in the Free State where major celebrations took place on the 8th of January. Mantashe is also expected to address party veterans during a breakfast meeting before visiting the homes of struggle veterans in the area.
A host of activities have been planned for the next two days.
The main rally in the region to celebrate the party’s 100th birthday takes place this afternoon at the Rustdene Stadium. A host of activities have been planned for the next two days.
