A simple Google Search for a Prepaid Electricity and Water Meters will serve up many results from different manufacturers, wholesalers, suppliers and installers. The choices can be bewildering. At Straton Prepaid we are quite conservative with the equipment that we supply and install – 5 decades of experience have led us to stick to tried and tested equipment that we would use in our own homes or business premises. And long hard lessons in the value of NOT having comebacks also taught us the value of supplying equipment that is reliable. That, in turn, translates into satisfied clients and savings from lower operating costs to make our pricing more competitive.

With that said Straton Pre-paid currently offer two prepaid water meters – one of local manufacture and one imported from China. Both do the job of measuring and dispensing water equally well and both are STS Compliant. Both have been through many years of testing on the workbench and in the field.

So, why offer two then? Simple – one is cheaper and ultrasonic (ultrasonic measurement ensures better accuracy and performance in all types and conditions of water) and the other is a tad higher in price and uses a pulse output water meter in order to enable metering measurement, leak and tamper detection.

A FIELD of over 1000 runners powered to the finish of the Rafis BayRun with Discovery Vitality which started and ended at the Cape Recife High School on Saturday.

The cold and wet conditions did not dampen the spirits of the runners and there was a festive atmosphere at the race. Team Vitality running club members added some colour to the grey skies with their pink shirts and enjoyed the post -race hospitality snacks at the Team Vitality hospitality area.

Mari Leach, Wellness Specialist at Discovery Vitality complimented the event.

“What an enjoyable 13th leg of the national Vitality Run Series, which consists of 17 running events across South Africa.

“It was great to see walkers and runners coming out to participate despite the cooler, wet weather.

“The camaraderie amongst the runners was inspiring, from beginner walkers to those looking to improve their personal bests, these events really have a place for everyone!,” added Leach.

In the men’s 21km, Sinethemba Mirele, of Nedbank running club, finished with a wide lead in 1.13.29, followed by Lonwabo Mkonza, of Hollywood Bets, in 1.17.55 and Phathutshedzo Tiou, of Madibaz, in third position in 1.18.01.

Cherise Carreira, of Boxer athletic club, was the first woman home in 1.21.12, with Kayla Nell, of Charlo athletics club, in second place, in 1.27.44 and Nosipho Dlamini, of Waterfall athletics club, finishing third in 1.38.35.

There was a tight finish in the 10km race, with Sinawo Poti, of Ikhamva athletics club, finishing first in 31.22, closely followed by Thabang Mosiako, of Nedbank running club, in 31.23 and Simon Sibeko, of Boxer athletics club, finishing third in 31.24.

Nedbank running club team-mates shone in the women’s 10km with Kelly van Vliet, finishing first in 38.04, followed by Refeloe Solomons in second place in 40.43 and Ntombesintu Mfunzi, third in 42.44.

“I made the decision on the morning of the race to change from 21km to a 10km speed set, said Kelly van Vliet.

“Due to the wind I didn’t think I would get a decent long run in, but the 10km route was great, very wet and windy with amazing marshalls,” added Kelly.

Rafi Selvilya, local race sponsor from Rafi’s Appliances & Mattresses, finished the 10km in a brisk walk, whilst his wife, Shelley enjoyed the 5km with her friend, Roma Kraitzick.

“I want to thank all the runners for supporting our event in the rain, it was fantastic to see such a strong turnout and we are happy to partner with Discovery Vitality and their National Series.

“I also want to thank Jonathan Mandell, the race director, and his hardworking team from 32Gi athletic club, as well as Achilles athletics club members who marshalled the route, for a well-managed event which was enjoyed by all.”

“Our aim was to host an event that catered for all types of runners, from fun to serious, and looking at the crowd today, I believe we achieved this goal,” he added.

The 5km men’s race was won by Sizwe Khumalo, of Madibaz, in 19.24, and Cleo Jacobs was the first woman to finish the 5km in 20.35.

Born in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape and raised in a small village of eQuthubeni by both his parents. Baphiwe Is the youngest of two sons after his brother Aviwe Strom. he later went on to live with his mother at Ngcabasa Location, where he attended school for both his primary and high school life. His surroundings have shaped the man his is today and attributes them to being his parents, the community his was raised in and his aspirations.

After completing High School in 2021 where he came in position fourth in the ”Top Ten Achievers in Circuit 7’’ presented by Sanlam award and passed matric with a bachelor pass. He went on to study Public Relations Management at Nelson Mandela University here in Gqeberha in 2022. Unsure if the course he had chosen was the right one. Two years into it, he began to grown fond of it since it has taught him how writing and media are great tool towards helping brands tell their story.

This year Baphiwe was handpicked by Alan Straton of MyPR to be one of three interns alongside Londeka Ngcongo and Dolly Shabala for the 2024 period. As a part of their in-service training, from whom which they will learn the ins-and-out of the industry who has two decades plus years’ experience in print and media. Their goal is to work with brands around Gqeberha using their writing and media skills to achieve their objectives. At the same time gain work experience to complete their degree and help them in their journey to be Public Relations Practitioners which will propel their careers. He has embarked on a journey to lend his penmanship and innovation in every creative space he is involved in.

This opportunity we allow us to be a sponge to information but bring in new ideas and leave a mark on clients. Internships are a good bridge between education and the workplace because they prepare you for what is to come and give you the much-needed experience required. Should you have a main prepaid electricity meter in your home it may have to be ‘recoded’ in order to continue dispensing electricity after November 2024.

Please note that this also applies to PRIVATE pre-paid meters as supplied by Straton Electrical Pre-Paid and the many other vendors around the world.

With regards to the main utilities plans to recode existing meters Eskom has provided an update on its meter recoding initiative for all its customers and says that it is on track to meet the November 2024 deadline to recode around 6.8 Million pre-paid meters.

Eskom and all the electricity distributors in South Africa are required to recode prepaid electricity meters. The current Token Identifier (TID) code will expire on 24 November 2024 and after this date all Standard Transfer Specification (STS) compliant meters will stop accepting credit tokens. Most meters in the country fall within this category. In a virtual media briefing (see video), Eskom provided an update on its Key Revision Number (KRN) rollover project which is aimed at ensuring that all Eskom 6.8 million prepaid electricity meters are recoded before the deadline. This comes after a successful Phase 1 deployment in August and September 2023, dedicated to clear all the initial glitches and teething KRN rollover process issues were completed.

Eskom has done a ‘soft rollout’ of the DIY approach and reports that over 600 000 Key Vhange Tokens have been succesfully applied. There is no charge for this service and Eskom encourages consumers to report anyone or any company wanting to charge to do the recode.

All prepaid meters must be recoded, whether you are an Eskom customer or a municipality supplied customer or a private pre-paid meter owner.

This programme is a customer DIY rollover. As a prepaid meter user, you will be guided on how to recode your own meter. It is very easy. Just follow three steps, and you are done!

Get your two key change tokens from your local or online vendor when Eskom prompts you that your area is active follow these steps:

1. Enter the first of the 20-digit codes into the system and wait for it to be accepted.
2. After the code has been accepted, the second 20-digit code must be entered.
3. A third code – which is the top-up token – can then be entered. Customers will know the system has been successfully updated when the top-up token is successfully loaded.

“It is all systems go for the Key Revision Number rollover project. The various provincial teams are working around the clock to ensure that everyone is recoded before the due date. We understand that there is no major project without glitches, but this is a commitment we have made to ourselves and will put every effort towards delivering on it,” said Eskom’s General Manager: Operations Enablement, Velaphi Ntuli.

Eskom confirmed that a Do It Yourself (DIY) approach is a more convenient and cost-effective approach for the rollout. Easy step-by-step guides are available on the various Eskom’s communication channels including social media platforms, Alfred Chatbot, and the Eskom website to enable a seamless process.

Progress of the rollout will be monitored centrally daily through a dashboard and support will be provided through various customer support mechanisms in place. Customers will be issued with a pair of key change tokens at the time when they purchase their normal top-up prepaid electricity via any of the Eskom approved vending channels and outlets.

Customers should make sure that all pre-purchased tokens are loaded into the meter before recoding the meter as these will not work after recoding.

“It is critical that I emphasise that the recoding of meters is done at no cost to the customers. Therefore, we caution customers against scammers who would attempt to take advantage of the recoding process and request for any form of payment for this service. Furthermore, as this is a DIY process, Eskom employees will continue to only assist customers that have logged queries and received proper reference numbers”, explained Eskom’s Senior Manager for Customer Services, Portia Papu.

“The process of buying electricity has not changed. Customers will still be able to buy electricity from major banks, online platforms, fuel-filling (service) stations, prepaid electricity vending agents and retailers across the country as they are currently doing,” added Papu.

It is important for customers to take note that should they not recode their meter, the meter will become inactive after 24 November 2024.

PLEASE NOTE: This recoding extends to all STS compliant meters including pre-paid gas and water meters.

My name is Londeka Ngcongo. I was born and raised in a small township called Clermont in KZN. I am a second-year student in Public Relations Management at Nelson Mandela University. Until someone asks them, “Who are you?” everyone believes they know who they are. If I could respond in a nutshell, I would say, “My name is Dolly Shabalala, and I am a child of God,” but unfortunately, this article requires me to write 500 words that just scratch the surface of Dolly’s personality. To begin with, my name is Dolly Shabalala, and I am a 23-year-old woman from the KwaZulu-Natal town of Bergville. My father is Mbhekiseni Manzini, and my mother is Biziwe Shabalala.

Bethany Primary School was where I went to elementary school. Those were my happiest years, being a grown woman takes a lot of energy. After that, I attended Thokoza High School for my eighth and ninth grades before completing my final years of education at Amaphisi High School where I got a bachelor’s pass with a distinction in economics. I’m a second-year public relations student at Nelson Mandela University, and Mr. Alan Straton has given me this amazing opportunity to work as an intern at My Press Release. I’ve always been interested in learning new things and expanding my knowledge. I find excitement in activities like reading books, participating in thought-provoking conversations, and watching or listening to podcasts. I have the ideal opportunity to learn more and absorb more wisdom with this internship. That is my main motivation above everything else, as Mr. Alan would say, “Knowledge not only makes you money, but it also gives you power.”

According to Paulo Coelho, “Life is about seeking your personal legend” In his book The Alchemist, life is all about navigating personal growth and development.

Who happens to be you at the end of the book, and that’s precisely what I live for. I value education and exposure to the things that enable me to live the life I want to live because I want to be the best version of myself. My background is hopeless, therefore everything I do is an attempt to convince myself that I can do anything I set my mind to. Above all, though, I do it to highlight to those with comparable backgrounds to mine that they also have a chance to rewrite the story of their lives and turn it into exactly what they want it to be. I believe in changing the narrative of people dwelling in the past and letting it define who they are. My life experiences moulded me to become who I am, but they do not define me. I am who I want to be, I get to decide the life I want to lead and that is determined by the choices I make now. I seek to be the best version of myself and that requires grabbing any learning opportunity I come across and being open to being fully invested and excelling in any environment I am in.

Simon Sibeko, 28, of Boxer athletics club, flew to the finish in an excellent time of 29.54, leading the top five pack. Yanga Malusi, 26, of Real Gijimas, finished second in 30.14, followed by the talented young Ikhamva athletics club squad, Sinethemba Jilingisi, 20, third in 30.23, Cwenga Nose, 23, fourth in 30.50 and Lithembe Menzeleleli, 24, in fifth position finishing in a time of 30.55.

Simon Sibeko, who is currently living in Gqeberha and training at the Ikhamva camp, credited esteemed coach, Mike Mbambani for his performance.

“I am happy with my run and want to thank Mike Mbambani, his training camp has made a big difference for my running,” said Sibeko.

Ikhamva Club coach and race convenor, Mike Mbambani, recently received the highest grading from Athletics SA when he was awarded his Level 3 Coaching Certificate from ASA and delivered his thesis to a packed auditorium who were intrigued to listen and learn from the coach who is making a huge difference for talented athletes in the Eastern Cape.

“The NMB Gelvandale 10km is the second last event for the Legacy Series this year which finishes with the NMB 1City Marathon in December.

“Today is also the official start of the track season at Gelvandale Stadium in line with the Legacy Projects vision of bringing sport and races to the people.

“We can see that the Legacy project is working with young highly competitive runners participating and developing into elite athletes like Melikhaya Frans and Thabang Mosiako,” added Mbambani.

Approximately 250 athletes took on Gelvandale’s tough 10km route running in ideal cool weather conditions. The Gelvandale Run, which is sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality as part of the Legacy Project, took place on Saturday.

Kelly van Vliet, of Nedbank running club, was the first woman home in 37.13, and first in her age group 35-39, followed by Kayla Nell, of Charlo athletics club in 38.06. Refeloe Solomons of Nedbank, finished third in 38.55, and first in her age group 40-49, followed by Leigh Callaghan, in fourth place in 39.23, and Ntombesintu Mfunzi, of Nedbank running club, who finished fifth, in 40.38.

Bubbly Kelly was happy with her win. “It was very hilly but good,” said van Vliet.

Ntombesintu Mfinzi who finished first in 2022, had a superb run to finish fifth, considering that she gave birth to her baby son two months before.

“I am glad that I kept active during my pregnancy, said Ntombi.

“It is important for women to know that they can continue being active when pregnant, just not pushing too hard, but training comfortably.

“Your body will respond and I am so happy that my legs kept their memory and that I ran well today, said Mfunzi.

Ikhamva Club shone throughout this race, in addition to three of its members finishing in the top five, Desmond Zibi, 60, broke the EP Athletics record in his 60-69 age category in his impressive time of 0.35.15.

Margie Saunders, of Nedbank running club, gave an outstanding performance finishing first in her 70-79 age category, in a time of 0.46.07, smashing both the EP and SA 10km records in her age category.

Gift Chigomarawa, of Nedbank running club, won his 35-39 age category in 0.32.29, with Luyanda Tshangana, of Ikhamva athletics club, winning his 40-49 age category in 0.32.18. Noel Adams, of Gelvan athletics club, came first in the 50-59 age category in a time of 0.37.40.

Christine Claasen, of Achilles athletics club won the women’s 50-59 age category, in 0.44.39.

Cathy Allers, of Elite athletics club, won the 60-69 age category in 0.56.06.

Running legend, Hannes Els of Madiba Bay Warriors, who has been running for an impressive 44 years, won his age category, 70-79, in 0.45.46, with Origa Nell, of Muirite Striders winning the women’s 80+ age category in 1.30.23.

Oyama Ntantiso, of Nedbank running club, won the junior men’s category in 0.32.33 and Zintle Xhonti, of Motherwell athletics club, won the junior women’s category in 0.45.47.

Discovery Vitality has partnered with Rafi’s Appliances and Mattresses to bring the popular National Vitality Series to Gqeberha on Saturday.

The Rafi’s BayRun will be hosted by 32Gi and Achilles Athletics clubs on Saturday, 21 October, and will start and finish at Cape Recife High School.

Collection of race numbers and late entries will be available at Rafi’s Appliances and Mattresses store at 2 West Street, Newton Park, from 16.00 to 19.00, this week on both Thursday, and Friday evenings, 19 and 20 October, as well as from 05.00 at Cape Recife High School on race day.

The first 350 runners to register or enter on both Thursday and Friday evenings will receive free Rafi’s BayRun race T-shirts and the chance to win Rafi’s shopping vouchers which will be drawn every 30 minutes instore on both evenings.

The Vitality Run Series was introduced in 2017, with the aim to help people improve their fitness through physical activity. The Series has over the years offered iconic events in the Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and recently launched the George Series and the upcoming Gqeberha Series. The series is open to anyone, and Vitality members earn Vitality points for participating in races.

The Rafi’s BayRun will offer three flat and scenic distances, 21km, 10km and a fun 5km. All three distances will be timed, and all finishers will receive a Rafi’s BayRun with Discovery Vitality Series medal.

“We’d love to see over 1000 runners taking on the three distances,” said race director, Jonathan Mandell of 32Gi athletics club, who is keen to see the event grow with both Rafi’s and Discovery Vitality’s support.

Local Event Sponsor, Rafi Selvilya, of Rafi’s Appliances and Mattresses, is an avid supporter of living a healthy lifestyle and has been sponsoring local running events for many years. “We invite all runners, the serious, the fun runners and walkers to join our event,” said Rafi.

The event program will start with the 21km at 06.00, the 5km at 06.05, the 10km at 06.20, and the prize giving will be held at 09.30.

Club Gazebos are welcome and encouraged. Runners will be able to enjoy a social warm-up and cool down zone in the race village from Virgin Active as well as coffee, boerewors rolls and pancakes at the finish.

Three Directors of the 12-member Eastern Province Cricket Board have been removed through a unanimous board decision on the basis of the findings of two inquiries headed by retired judges.

They are Mr Rafiek Potgieter, Mrs Dai Tai Marais and Mr Leon Miggels.

This follows a finding by Judge B M Ngoepe on behalf of Cricket South Africa (CSA) which cleared the present and former Eastern Province Cricket (EPC) Board members and officials of claims of impropriety made by the three regarding the establishment of Mega Sportz NPC.

In a separate process, the Pillay Disciplinary Committee under retired judge Ronnie Pillay found that “the actions of all three either individually, or together deprives the Board from operating as it should.

“The behaviour, in many ways, constitute conduct unbecoming of company directors.

“The disrespect for other Board members, attending illegal meetings, interfering with the status of the president especially in the absence of any objection to the election process and his election as president.

“It clearly suggests the existence of a secret or malfeasant agenda which is a threat to the business of the Board.”

The board resolution to dismiss the Directors was passed on October 5.

“EP Cricket can now focus on growing support for the game in the Eastern Cape,” said EP Cricket President Makhandan Leon Coetzee.

“We want to have winning teams at all levels

“Notwithstanding the attempts by the former Directors to portray EPC, the other former and existing Directors and EPC officials in a negative light in the media, Mega Sportz NPC has initiated and secured major sponsorships for the benefit of cricket in the region. Since becoming operational in September 2022, it continues to focus on the implementation of EPC’s Financial Sustainability Programme.

“These include the securing of DAFABET as a naming rights sponsor for the DAFABET St Georges Stadium as well as the DAFABET Warriors for a three year term, managing successfully the first season of the SA20 competition and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as well as non-cricket events that includes US Embassy Program, IsiXhosa Music Festival”.

Judge Pillay was assisted by Mr Albert Beyleveld SC and Mr Idris Dala, both of the Eastern Cape Society of Advocates.
The Committee, which first met on July 10, 2023, found that all three board members had contravened a number of provisions in the EPC MOI, Board Charter and the Companies Act.

These included disrupting board meetings, breach of trust in relation to the performance of a director’s function and communicating with the media without a mandate from the board since October 2022.

The findings echo similar findings by CSA.

In response to appeals by the dismissed directors for CSA to intervene, the Chief Executive Officer of CSA, Mr Pholetsi Moseki, mandated Judge B M Ngoepe, (Retired Judge President) in May 2023 to look into disputes “between two groups of Directors of Eastern Province Cricket (EPC).

Judge B M Ngoepe, on behalf of CSA, cleared Eastern Province Cricket (EPC) Board members, former board members and officials of claims of impropriety made by the three regarding the establishment of Mega Sportz NPC, an affiliate company of EPC established to provide stadium management functions at St Georges Park, identify other commercial activities to increase income and secure sponsorships for the benefit of EPC and its professional Warriors cricket team.

It operates under a further affiliate company of EPC being Cricket Eastern Cape (Pty) Ltd.

Member clubs of EPC had mandated it to establish Mega Sportz NPC with experienced Directors to fulfil a role enabling EPC to focus on improving amateur cricket in the region.

Further Issues raised by the dismissed board members included the validity of a recordal agreement regarding the hire of the St George’s Park Cricket Stadium between Eastern Province Cricket (NPC), Sun TV Network Ltd (Sunrisers Eastern Cape) and Mega Sportz NPC relating to the SA 20 in January 2023; and the election of Mr Leon Coetzee as President of the EP Cricket Board.

Judge Ngoepe found that all governance aspects pertaining to the establishment of Mega Sportz NPC and the conclusion of the agreement defining its duties as between it and EPC had been followed.

He found that no official or director of EPC had benefitted financially by virtue of the agreement concluded with Mega Sportz NPC.

He also found that all agreements relating to the SA 20 were authorised by EPC and valid thereby addressing an unauthorised report circulated to clubs and the media alleging that such agreements were invalid.

The judge states in his report:
“What is peculiar about the Board of the EPC is that one consistently finds one and the same set of individuals together complaining against the rest, and, for that matter, on a number of issues,” he states in his summary of his findings.

“I have not come across any issue or instance in which the pattern was broken where for example one or two of the current complainants fell into the so-called other group or vice-versa.

“It is therefore a matter of grave concern that there exist two camps within the Board, something which, with all due respect, must be ended”.
Judge Ngoepe was critical of board members using the media to settle disputes. “There has been a tendency to take internal matters to the media; that is – to use the fashionable terminology – weaponize the media.

“In my view, the Board is the platform for robust debates if needs be – something which is common – as opposed to taking matters to the media.

“People should feel free to air their views in the Boardroom, without any fear of a leak to the media. It is accepted that sometimes things do leak out to the media, but a practice to do so deliberately would inhibit members from freely airing their views; it will have a chilling effect.

“Members of the Board should therefore desist from resorting to the media.

“In normal circumstances when the Board speaks to the media, it would do so in accordance with internal procedures, such as through a spokesperson, CEO, chair, or some agreed channel”.

The three dismissed board members have the right to approach a court to review the determination by the Board, in compliance with Section 71(5) of the Companies Act and Article 20.1.8 of the MOI.
