Most roads in the Eastern Cape closed due to snow.(SABC)
Cold weather has arrived across the country. In the Eastern Cape, heavy snowfall has led to the closure of several mountain passes.
On the
N9 Route, the LootsbergPass between Graaff Reinet and Middelburg has been closed. The WapadsbergPass between Cradock and Graaff Reinet is also closed.
Earlier, Arrive Alive alerted motorists over the closures of the NicoMalanPass between WhittleSea and Seymour as well as R61 between Cofimvaba and Queenstown.
The South African Weather Service has advised motorists travelling along the south coast in KwaZulu-Natal to be cautious as severe thunderstorms accompanied by hailstones have been reported.
Forecaster Lucky Makhweja says the storms are due to a cold front that is passing through the province as it heads towards Madagascar.
Makhweja says: “Right now on the radar, we are picking up that something is coming south of Durban, very strong thunderstorms. Most of the areas are Bulwer , Hammersdal and Hillcrest. It was hailing in the last hour but it is all coming to the coast especially south of Durban.”
