The Kanna Awards, informally known as the Klein Karoo Oscars, recognise productions of outstanding quality at the annual Absa Klein Karoo Nationale Kunstefees.
It’s work that was surprising and innovative and kept audiences on the edge of their seats.
All the productions on the official festival programme are considered for Kannas.
This year, there are 10 categories, each with three nominees.
It is a feather in the cap of all artists and productions to be
nominated. The winners will be announced on Sunday, May 6, at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town.
The Afrikaans Onbeperk award for a lifetime achievement will be awarded to Abraham H de Vries and the Afrikaans Onbeperk prize for a young voice to Ronelda S Kamfer.
Louis van Niekerk will receive the Special Kanna for interpretation.
The Kanna panel had their work cut out for them evaluating all the productions, and some members had to see five different shows per day.
Taking into consideration that the programme offered 37 theatre productions, 39 music productions, two dance productions, five children’s theatre shows, six literary productions and 20 visual art exhibitions, the number of qualifying offerings was daunting, with a total of 109 different items being considered for the Kannas.
The panel had to spend many hours in theatres and galleries. Assuming an average of one hour per production or exhibition viewing, it added up to 100 hours, or four full days of viewing and reflection.
The 2012 Kanna panel this year was led by Erns Grundling, assisted by David April, Charl Bezuidenhout, Willemien Brümmer, Chrisna du Preez, Eduard Greyling, Hylton Nel, Robert Pearce, Laetitia Pople, Pieter Redelinghuys, Martjie Roos, John Theodore, Wim Vorster, Hein Willemse and Celeste Williams.
