MEC for transport, roads and public works Thandiswa Marawu will tomorrow officially hand over land to the Camdeboo municipality as a donation to the Robert Sobukwe Trust in Graaff-Reinet.
The land will be used for the erection of a memorial museum in honour of the late Pan Africanist Congress president Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe.
The donation is part of the provincial government’s outreach programme,
Public works provincial spokesperson Ncedo Kumbaca said: “Additional to the land hand over, there will be a handing over of car wash equipment and cleaning detergent to two car wash projects, landscaping of the entrance to Graaff-Reinet and presentation of transport related career opportunities.”
Kumbaca said the main event will be held at Alex Laing Community Hall in Graaff-Reinet, where Marawu will deliver a keynote address.
“There will also be a parading of the National Youth Services students, two young pilots and seven traffic officers prior to the event,” Kumbaca said.
PAC provincial chairperson Mzwanele Nyhontso welcomed the initiative, saying it was long overdue.
“The building of the museum is not enough, as Sobukwe made a huge comtribution to the South African Struggle. We want the name of that municipality (Camdeboo) to change to Robert Sobukwe municipality,” said Nyhontso. Sobukwe was born in Graaf Reinet on December 5, 1924, and died on February 27, 1978.
