Identifying the victims of the Cradock-Graaff-Reinet bus accident started this morning. Seventeen people were killed in the head-on collision between a taxi and a school bus. Fourteen were seriously injured.
The Mthatha bound minibus ploughed into the school bus, allegedly after overtaking another vehicle. The Cradock primary school was closed today after the headmaster was killed and four teachers were seriously injured in the accident.
Pathologists are working flat out to conclude post-mortems. Forensic pathology deputy director, Mkhuseli Bhadiwe,says: “We even worked on Sunday because we knew people were going to come from today, we did not want it to take to long.”
School principal Wimpie Van Der Merwe is expected to be buried on Thursday. Other funeral arrangements are still being made. Police are still investigating the accident.
The Presidency says the death of one South African on the country’s roads is unacceptable and painful. It urged law enforcement agencies to ensure that negligence is punished to the full extent of the law.
