President Jacob Zuma has extended his condolences to the people of the Eastern Cape and the families of the 18 people who died during an accident outside Cradock in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.

According to reports, two buses collided on the R61 between Cradock and Graaf-Reinet.

One of the buses was transporting school children from Cradock to a school event in Graaf-Reinet, while the other was carrying passengers travelling from Cape Town to Mthatha.

Two schoolchildren were among the 18 killed. Fourteen people were also seriously injured.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their loved ones in this tragedy. We also wish those injured a speedy recovery so that they can reunite with their families at home.

“Although these collisions appear to be taking place repeatedly leading to many deaths, we must not lose our collective sense of weeping. Even the death of one South African on our roads is unacceptable and painful, even more so these numbers of our people including children that we now appear to lose each week,” Zuma said.

He called on law enforcement agencies to conduct the necessary investigations and ensure that negligence on anyone’s part is punished to the full extent of the law. – SAnews.gov.za

The Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Roads and Public Works, Thandiswa Marawu, has extended government’s condolences to the families of those killed in the horrific bus crash on Saturday morning on the R61 between Cradock and Graaf Reinet.

“On behalf of the provincial government, I would like to convey our message of condolences to the bereaved families and wish those that are still in hospitals a speedy recovery,” said Marawu.

The crash, which claimed 18 lives – including two school children – involved a Sprinter bus and a school bus. Fourteen people were also seriously injured in the crash.

According to Arrive Alive spokesperson, Tshepo Machaea, the school bus was transporting children to an event in Graaf-Reinet when it collided with a bus carrying passengers from Cape Town to Mthatha.

Marawu said her department was seriously considering introducing a 24-hour shift system for traffic officers in order to provide safe passage for motorists on the provincial roads.

“We are not going to fold arms. We will engage national government to fast-track the discussions of introducing a 24-hour shift system for traffic officers in order to improve law enforcement on our roads… In fact, I will engage traffic officers’ labour unions in our province about my intention,” said the MEC.

Marawu is expected to join the Deputy Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, in a visit to accident victims at Cradock Hospital and the parents of the school children who died in the crash. – SAnews.gov.za

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – Sixteen people were killed in a collision between two buses in South Africa’s remote Eastern Cape province on Saturday, the latest in a string of public transport tragedies in the continent’s biggest economy.

SAPA news agency said four people were seriously injured. One of the buses was carrying schoolchildren to an event near the town of Cradock, 700 km (440 miles) south of Johannesburg. It was not known how many of the dead were youngsters.

Even though it is Africa’s wealthiest country, South Africa has a dire road-safety record, with poor driving or unreliable vehicles mostly to blame.

Twenty people were killed when a bus careered off a highway near Johannesburg in June, and 26 died earlier this month when a freight train ploughed into a truck carrying farm workers over a level-crossing.

They have all been transported to hospitals in the area. The minibus was carrying schoolchildren to an event in Graaf-Reinet when it collided with a bus carrying passengers from Cape Town to Mthatha.

“The accident was a head-on collision,” said Machaea.

It is still unclear what led to the crash.

Transport department spokesperson Ncebo Kumbaca said the deputy minister Sindisiwe Chikunga and Eastern Cape transport MEC Thandiswa Marawu were expected to visit the injured soon.

DA MP Donald Smiles, in a statement, extended his condolences to the families of those killed.

“Our hearts and prayers are with them,” he said.

Smiles said the accident emphasised the need to pay serious attention to road safety.

“This heart-breaking incident could have been avoided.
We cannot allow the unnecessary loss of lives on our roads to continue,” he said.

Fourteen other people were seriously injured. They were being treated at various hospitals in the province. – Sapa

The accident is reported to have been a head-on collission(SABC)

Another two people have died in hospital, bring the death toll in this morning’s bus accident in the Eastern Cape to 18. Arrive Alive spokesperson Tsepo Macheaya says two more people died in CradockHospital.

 

He says 14 people have suffered serious injuries. Some of them have been transferred to hospitals in Port Elizabeth, East London and Bloemfontein. Twenty-eight passengers were discharged after receiving treatment at CradockHospital.

 

The accident happened on the Cradock/Graaff-Reinet road when the vehicles collided head-on. The bus was traveling from Cape Town to Mthatha and the school bus from Cradock for a sports event at Graaff-Reinet.

 

Two of the deceased were pupils from the CradockPrimary School. The driver of the school bus was also killed. The accident happened on the Cradock Graaff-Reinet road early this morning.

 

The cause of the accident is not very clear, but it has been reported that two buses collided. The one was from Cape Town to Mthatha and the second was a bus from Cradock conveying school children to Graaff-Reinet for sporting activities. 

 

The road has been closed, the R61 closed from Cradock side up to N9. Injured taken to Cradock Hospital Not in position to give an exact number. It is one of worst accidents involving school children.

 

Earlier, Transport Deputy Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga sent her condolences to the families of the people killed in this collision.

 

Chikunga says the country’s road safety strategy should be reviewed. She says the current road safety strategy seems to be less effective.

 

Speaking during the funeral service of the victims of the truck and coal-train accident in Mpumalanga, Chikunga says the rate at which people lose their lives on the country’s roads is worrisome.
