The Kena Health App offers real-world, cost-effective healthcare to millions of South Africans

Sooner or later, everyone gets sick. For those who can afford it, they visit a private GP or clinic to receive a diagnosis and the peace of mind that comes with quality treatment for everyday health concerns. But what happens when that everyday quality care and advice is beyond their means? What happens to those who don’t have the time to wait in a clinic queue or don’t have the money to settle a doctor’s bill?

Kena Health uses a team-based approach that allocates the most suitable healthcare practitioners to each patient’s unique needs, based on a shared data view of that patient. Family planning advice, gastritis, anaemia, allergies, UTIs and common colds can be treated by an experienced and qualified

nurse. Perhaps an infection, hypertension or other chronic conditions need a prescription from a doctor. Users download the app and register in under two minutes. From there they chat briefly to Linda, Kena’s digital assistant, who collects general information about their condition that forms part of the secure patient record. This means patients do not have to repeat their medical Information and background throughout every step of the process.

Kena then connects the user directly to a nurse or mental health professional to receive the medical care or advice they need at a fraction of what it would cost to visit a doctor – and for free at the outset. Consultations can be conducted via text, voice or video within the app, all tailored to keep data costs manageable. In instances where a doctor is required, the nurses can transfer the call for a seamless connection within the Kena team.

The key to Kena Health is not just the efficiency of information collection, but the ease for the user, and a great experience of quality and affordable care from the Kena team of professionals. By leveraging technology and a team-based approach, the app brings down the cost of care while improving the patient’s health outcomes. The app further leverages technology in service of a human solution by generating scripts, sick notes and even referral letters, all seamlessly provided within the app. As users get used to this new kind of healthcare, their first three consultations will be free, with subsequent consultations costing as little as R160 each. Kena Health’s services are initially available from 8 am to 6pm every weekday, and 8 am to 2 pm on Saturdays.

FEBRUARY 15, 2016: The South African National Roads Agency Ltd (SANRAL) would like to notify travellers that blasting is scheduled to take place on the N9 Section 7 between Middelburg and Carlton Heights, on Thursday, 18 February at 2pm.

At 15km from Middelburg on the Carlton Heights side, the road will be closed for approximately 15 minutes when the blast takes place.

Motorists are requested to plan their trips accordingly, and to use caution when making use of the road.

Pop culture also known as mass culture is what drives society, it is known as beliefs, practices, and objects that dominate a particular geographical area, it is consistent and changes throughout time, this is what sparked an interest in Public Relations to MyPR’s newest intern, Zimkhitha Qulu.

Qulu was born in a small town in the Eastern Cape called Mount Ayliff, completed her foundation and intermediate phases of school in a township called White City situated in Johannesburg – an environment that is remarkably diverse in terms of ethnicity, culture, and style. Zimkhitha has also resided in a rural area, which exposed her to a slightly different algorithm of pop culture to that of a township.

When we look at the ways in which the people from these two societies communicate, it is slightly different. Because culture is different therefore ethics and beliefs are also different, this plays a vital role in effective two-way communication which is what Zimkhitha is enthusiastic about.

Zimkhitha believes that for communication to be effective both parties should be able to participate and there should be no barriers in communication, she believes that the diverse platforms of communications we use in the modern days are art and need to be explored but mostly understood to achieve effective communication.

She believes that social media presence plays a crucial role in an organization and individuals’ success and credibility in a society, therefore, being able to understand how to communicate to a particular audience is vital. She believes in using the art of a variety of languages to converse to accommodate a variety of audiences because this is advantageous to both the person sending the message and the person receiving the message.

Zimkhitha is currently a third-year student at the Nelson Mandela university studying Public Relations management, she believes that embarking on a journey as MyPR’s newest intern will expand her knowledge beyond the Art of communication, introduce her to the practical side of public relations theory that she has been learning at the institution.

Public relations is more than the aspect of communications, she says that it is providing an unbiased interpretation of an event or campaigning to influence public opinion about an organization or public figure.

Johannesburg, 03 March 2022 – You may be wondering how to prepare your house or your business for load-shedding.  This guide provides ideas for you to consider – some of which are easy and affordable.

DO THE EASY THINGS FIRST

1. Check the load-shedding schedule to plan your electricity usage. Buy a small gas cooker if you don’t already cook with gas.
2. Make sure that your electronics, like your cell phone and laptop, have sufficient battery life.
3. Buy a solar cell charger, a car phone charger, or a cell phone power bank.
4. Buy rechargeable lights . They last for up to 10 hours when fully charged.
5. Buy a surge protector plug for your television, computer and fridge. This will protect your appliances when the power comes back on.

RESEARCH WAYS TO “LOAD-SHED PROOF” YOUR HOUSE.

Calculate the daily minimum amount of electricity needed for the household.

Do you need the lights, fridge, and TV on? Or only the lights and TV?

• You can then find out how much electricity each appliance needs.
• With lights, identify the wattage of your lights (it is usually printed on the globe itself).
• With appliances, find the labels on the appliance that state the power usage.

Kettles and electric stoves use a lot of electricity over a short period of time, so it’s best not to include these. You can rather use a gas stove to heat your water or cook your food. It is also best to exclude your geyser, as it uses a lot of electricity.

Now that you know how much power you will need, find out what the different options will cost you.

Load-shedding can last for between two and four hours at a time. Therefore, an ideal battery system capacity of five hours should be sufficient.

A battery backup system consists of the following components:

BATTERY CHARGER

Charges the rechargeable batteries from the AC mains power while there is no load-shedding.

Note: Sometimes the battery charger is built into the inverter.

INVERTER

Converts the DC battery power into usable AC power during load-shedding. Use an approved inverter. Grid-tied inverters must be registered with the municipality and installed by a qualified person.

BATTERY

Stores the electrical power for later use.

Compliance requirements:

If your battery system is a standalone appliance that you plug devices into, there are no compliance issues. If your battery system (including inverter) is interconnected with the wiring of your house, it must be declared via the municipality’s SSEG process to confirm that EITHER it is operating safely as an off-grid system OR it is compliant and authorised as a grid-tied system (usually in conjunction with PV). Use an inverter approved by your municipality and installed by a qualified person.

The size of the battery system will depend on the equipment to be powered during load-shedding.

An inverter that can provide 1 000 Watt (10.5A) continuously output and around 600Wh energy will be required if you need very limited usage with an average load of 240W, for example :

• 4 to 6 LED or Compact Fluorescent lights (CFL) amounting to 24W for LEDs or 45W for CFLs
• A TV and a decoder use 30W when off and 150W when in use
• A cell phone charger uses 0.5W not charging and 6W when charging

RCT MEGAPOWER MP-T1000S INVERTER TROLLY OR PORTABLE OPTION RCT MEGAPOWER MP-PBS160AC POWER BANKS

An inverter that can provide 2 000 Watt (10.5A) continuously output and around 1.2 kWh energy will be required for an average 3-bedroom house where the usage will be limited to an average load of 480W.

• 10 to 15 LED or CFL lights
• A TV and a decoder use 30W when off and 150W when in use
• One energy-efficient fridge / freezer on, managed well, will consume 100W – 200W
• A laptop uses 65W while charging

RCT MEGAPOWER MP-T2000S POWER TROLLY

An inverter that can provide 5600 Watt (17 A) continuously and around 4.8 kWh energy will be required for bigger houses, small offices and shops that want to be unaffected by load-shedding. This option will be limited up to a load of 1500W.

• All lighting and a TV will be operational
• Multiple fridges and freezers can be operated, but must be opened as little as possible
• Laptops and a printer can be used

With all three options, all cooking – including the boiling of water – is achieved using gas and not electricity. In addition, none of these options will be able to power geyser.

Alternatively, you can buy a stand-alone uninterrupted power supply (UPS) backup battery system, which allows you to plug in one or more items (similar to a generator). Johannesburg, 03 March 2022 : The enactment of the Property Practitioners Act on 1^st February 2022 has brought many exciting changes to the property sector including the requirement now for all property practitioners to have valid B-BBEE certificates and be B-BBEE compliant.

BEE was first introduced in the form of legislation in 2003. Government through the Department of Trade and Industry (Dti) introduced the revised Codes of Good Practice in October 2013. The revised Codes aim to enhance the implementation of B-BBEE in a meaningful and sustainable manner and contain principles and guidelines that will facilitate and accelerate the implementation of B-BBEE. The purpose of the Codes is to assist and advise the public and private sectors in the implementation of the B-BBEE Act.

The objectives of the codes of Good Practice are to:

• Increase the proportion of black ownership and control of entities.
• Increase the proportion of black women participation in entities since they have been marginalized for a long time.
• Increase the up skilling of black employees and the unemployed.
• Broaden the pool of economic opportunities and job creation.
• Increase the inclusion of community and broad-based enterprises and co-operatives in economic opportunities.

SALIENT FEATURES

All Property Practitioners fall under the Property Sector Codes which is regulated by Government Gazette no 40910 dated the 9^th of June 2017.

Exempt Micro Enterprises (EME’s)

EMEs are defined as businesses with an annual turnover below R2,5million. These businesses are exempt from calculating a full B-BBEE scorecard. They are only required to produce an EME B-BBEE affidavit

EME’s are automatically given a level 4, but 100% black owned EMEs are given a level 1, and 51% black owned EME’s are given a level 2.

Qualifying Small Enterprises (QSE’s)

QSE’s threshold qualification is an annual turnover between R2.5 million and R35 million.  QSE’s that are 100% black owned are given a level 1, and 51% black owned QSE’s are given a level 2 and these QSE’s only require to give an affidavit to their customers.  All other QSE’s require that a BEE verification audit be done by a SANAS accredited agency

QSE are required to comply with Ownership as a compulsory element and either Skills Development or Enterprise and Supplier Development.

Generic Entities

These are businesses that have an annual turnover above R35 million. It is a requirement that a BEE verification audit be done by a SANAS accredited agency, they are also required to comply with all the priority elements which are: Ownership, Skills Development and Enterprise Supplier Development.

If a Company does not achieve the minimum score in one of the priority elements, the calculated BEE level will decrease by one level. For example, if your company has no black ownership but reaches level 4, it will be dropped down to level 5.
