When we talk about accents in a written form we are talking about emphasis or stress marks above the letters described as: Grave, Acute, Circumflex, Tilde, Umlaut and Dot; NOT a national accent like South Africa, Australian, Indian etc. OR a local accent like Eastern Cape, Western Cape etc.

English and many other languages distinguish the different parts or syllables of a word by stressing one of them, but the ancient Greeks pronounced them with a distinct difference in musical pitch. Syllables marked with a grave accent (for example à, from Latin gravis ‘heavy, serious’) were spoken at a comparatively low pitch, those with an acute (á, from Latin acutus ‘sharp, high’) at a higher pitch, and those with a circumflex (?, from the Latin circumflexus, ‘bent around’ began at the higher pitch and descended during the pronunciation of the syllable.

The above goves some explanation of why the root of accent is Latin cantus ‘song’ which was a direct translation of the Greek word prosÿidia. Quite a few languages (technically known as ‘tonal’ languages) still have this musical way of speaking, among them Chinese, Swedish and Zulu: anyone familiar with the ‘sing-song’ speech of the Swedish chef in The Muppet Show will know what this sounds like.

How to type accents on a Linux Keyboard?

Similar to typing accents with a series of keystrokes, the Compose key allows you to quickly enter accent marks with just a few keystrokes. The catch is that you need Ubuntu along with the Gnome desktop in order to take advantage of the Compose feature.

Set a compose key by opening Settings navigate to the Keyboard section in the left column, then, under the Special Characters section, select Compose Key. Turn off the Default Layout, and select which key you would like to use.

After you have set a compose key, entering specific diacritics becomes as easy as entering the right series of keystrokes.

1. Grave: Type Compose + Grave (`) + Letter.
2. Acute: Type Compose + Apostrophe (‘) + Letter.

Today’s definition of absurd is to be stupid and unreasonable, or silly in a humorous way and examples of that are:

• What an absurd thing to say!
• Don’t be so absurd! Of course I want you to come.
• It’s an absurd situation – neither of them will talk to the other.
• Do I look absurd in this hat?

One sense of the Latin word absurdus was ‘out of tune’, and in the 17t century absurd was occasionally used with just this meaning. From the Latin sense it developed the meaning ‘out of harmony with reason, irrational’.

With loadshedding and the high price of electricity driving more and more people to install solar solutions on their roofs we are finding more and more clients wanting to install systems on roofs that are not 100% suited to such installations.

Straton Solar note three main ‘roof’ reasons for refusing to do solar installations:

1. Slate roofs with steep pitch
2. Roof trusses secured with nails and not nail plates
3. Asbestos and Cement Sheet Roofs

1. Slate Roofs:

These present special challenges as most have a very steep pitch and the likeliehood of making mistakes when securing panels are high and  expensive.

2. Roof Trusses:

Many older homes trusses are secured to each other using nails and NOT nail plates. Nail plates offer a secondary form of support that ensure that the roof trusses do not move under high winds – any form of movement on the roof will eventually work the rails loose that solar panels are secure to and result in another very expensive mistake.

3. Asbestos:

We are all aware of the dangers of working with asbestos and still come across clients who are willing to take the risk. What they are not aware of is that the South African Department of Employment and Labour issued an instruction on 9 November 2022 stating; “Departmental Inspectors have been instructed to not allow asbestos work that entails the instillation of any panels or sheets onto existing asbestos roofs.”

In the notice the Department says:

This correspondence aims to clarify any confusion and non-standardization around the installation of solar panels or “over-roofing” sheets onto existing asbestos roof sheets.

The Department of Employment and Labour (hereafter the Department) is aware of some building owners and clients who wants to install solar panels or “over-roofing” sheets on existing asbestos roof sheets, as type 2 asbestos work.

The Asbestos Abatement Regulations aims to eliminate the risk to health of asbestos in place. To this end, certain activities performed on asbestos in place are prohibited or restricted. Through the requirements of an asbestos management plan, all employers must make provision for a final phase out date as per regulation 6 (2) (c). In addition, certain activities are prohibited in regulation 14.

The drilling into asbestos cement roof sheets at any speed may release fibres and will be increasing the surface area of the asbestos material causing asbestos dust. Replacing screws or even using existing screw-holes will cause risk of abasing the asbestos roof sheets and release fibres during the process of installation and afterwards. Although processes could well be controlled during installation, after installation the client’s employees are still left with the asbestos material in place, but now with a greater surface area for asbestos fibre release, possible damage to the sheets that was worked on, and a greater possibility for abrasion of the asbestos materials due to the slightest movement. The asbestos roof sheets will be left in place on the building and eventual abatement of the asbestos will be VERY unlikely. This is against the intention of the Asbestos Abatement Regulations 2020.

Furthermore, with solar panels or “over-roofing” sheets installed over asbestos roof sheets, inspection of the condition and maintenance will be physically restricted, if not totally prevented.

Approved Inspection Authorities are requested to communicate this to potential clients as well as Registered Asbestos Contractors (RACs).

If the HEALTH reason does not scare you then maybe the FINANCIAL reason will; “The life of a solar panel is minimum 25 years so ideally the roof on which it is going to be installed should also last for at least 25 years. But asbestos or cement roof sheeting has a maximum life span of 15 years after which it begins to crumble and disintegrate. Hence after 15 years if you want to change your asbestos or cement roof then the only option is to remove the solar panels and mount them back again on a new roof which is a waste of time, money and effort. For this reason most solar installers, like Straton Solar, do not install solar panels on asbestos or cement roofs.”

Upgrades and additions to the Guardians of Hope premises in Belgravia East London have been made possible thanks to supporters of the Algoa FM Charity Golf Day, which returned to East London this year after a two-year break due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Guardians of Hope provides a safe sanctuary, medical and social support for abused children from just a few months old to four years of age.

It also facilitates adoptions.

“The funds raised by the Algoa FM Charity Golf Day will help us to provide more support to the babies in our care,” says Elaine Brenkman, founder and manager of the home.

The R80 000 will go towards the costs of taking ownership of the new Guardians of Hope home, a generator. and baby items like formula, nappies and food, she says.

The home has an ongoing need for clothing, nappies, food, formula, baby products and medication, she adds.

Due to the high number of babies sadly abandoned in the veld and in dustbins around Belgravia and surrounds, Guardians of Hope has also been requested to install a Baby Saver into which children can be placed.

It has launched a fund-raising drive through which donors are asked to commit to R100 a month through a debit order. More details are available on their site www.guardiansofhope.co.za

“We feel privileged and honoured to be able to raise funds for the work Elaine and her dedicated team are doing,” says Algoa FM marketing manager Lesley Geyer.

Large commercial and industrial premises invariably offer three phase Eskom or Municipal electric power as standard to business.

There is a growing move to sub let sections of a larger commercial and industrial premises to tenants which necessitates the need to measure and charge for electricity consumed by the tenant.

In the case of a three phase supply the amount being used by a tenant can become very large in relation to the actual rental.

The difference between a single and a three phase meter:

Typically, all domestic homes and small to medium businesses will have a single phase meter.

With a single phase meter, one alternating current (AC) supplies your property through one single wire. This is enough to power a regular business or home, so long as you don’t have a jacuzzi running 24/7 and a whole fleet of electric vehicles charging outside!

Three phase meters are usually only necessary for larger industrial and commercial businesses that use a lot more electricity. A three phase meter has three wires with three alternating currents (AC) supplying the meter and site, so much more power can be used.

Fortunately three phase prepaid electricity meters are readily available such as the Hexing 3 Phase Prepaid Meter with optional remote keypad. A little about Prepaid Meters – often referred to as Sub Meters:

Irrespective of the type of sub meter in place, sub meters are privately owned and managed, so the property owner or complex will still have the primary meter in place and will still be responsible for the primary account. Put simply, sub meters are in addition to, and will not be installed without the existence of the primary meter in the first instance. Remember the primary meter is there for Eskom or the Municipality to charge you for what the property has consumed.

Sub meters, just like primary meters, can also either be a post paid meter that is then read each month and the end user billed accordingly or the sub-meter can be prepaid. Sub meters take care of the challenge of fair apportionment as each end user is now responsible to pay for their own consumption. All the revenue collected from the sub meters each month is then used to pay for the primary meter.

Today we answer the age old question of; “How long should my load shedding backup battery last?” whilst resisting the temptation to answer with; “How long is a piece of string!”.

“With the increased tempo of loadshedding in South Africa we are getting many enquiries about the longevity of different batteries that clients have installed for backup,” says Straton Solar.

South Africa is approaching 130 days of continuous loadshedding and for many people that means 260 incidents of loadshedding in total. Let’s call those incidents ‘cycles’ in order to understand what to expect from your back up batteries going forward.

All batteries are rated in terms of Cycle Life – which is defined as the number of cycles (with a 100% Death of Discharge – DOD) a cell can perform before its capacity drops to 80% of its initial specified capacity and then starts to reduce visibly its performance.

Lithium-Ion Battery Life Cycle: 3500 to 8500 cycles

Lithium-ion batteries have expected life cycle ratings between 3 000 – 8 500 cycles for a heavily used battery. Light use can well exceed this rating. Each manufacturer will also provide the depth of discharge limit to achieve their life cycle rating.

In most cases, lithium battery manufacturers limit the depth of discharge to 80%. However, some manufacturers rate their batteries with a 100% depth of discharge. This means that you can use 100% of the capacity without excessively damaging the battery.

Lithium-ion batteries are much less affected by environmental and discharge factors than their lead-acid counterparts. This makes the life cycle estimates much more accurate.

A notable exception here is the Tesla Powerwall 2 which, if you charge your Tesla Powerwall using solar power and the grid you will receive unlimited cycles as part of the 10 year warranty which includes charging the battery with off-peak electricity.

Sealed AGM Battery Life Cycle: 320 to 1200 cycles

AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. In these batteries the electrolyte is absorbed into a glass-fibre mat between the plates by capillary action. AGM batteries are more suitable for short-time delivery of high currents than gel batteries.

Discharging an AGM battery by more than 50 percent and up to 70 percent is not advisable if it is done frequently, this will significantly reduce the battery life cycle. If you discharge your battery to 30 percent, you will have about 1200 cycles. But, if you discharge the battery to 50 percent you will get around 550 cycles. In the worst case, if you fully discharge the battery to 100 percent, you will get about 320 cycles.

AGM batteries can withstand up to three times more cycle life than a conventional car starter battery and are best suited for vehicles with an automatic start-stop system. Conventional starter batteries are not built to handle the high-power demands of these systems so AGM batteries must be used.

Lead-Acid Battery Life Cycle: 250 to 1000 cycles

There are multiple types of lead-acid batteries, each with a different life cycle expectancy. Depending on how you maintain your battery and which type you have, you can expect to get somewhere between a few hundred and up to a thousand charge cycles.

Longevity in lead-acid very much depends on light discharges and proper recharge cycles. If a battery is going to be used for heavy power demands or deep discharges these batteries will get many fewer cycles.

Many manufacturers point to a similar figure of at least 1 000 charging cycles if used in proper conditions. However, extreme heat and other environmental factors can significantly reduce the life of a lead acid battery.

In addition, the increased maintenance requirements for lead acid batteries can also lead to shorter lifespans. It is not uncommon for personnel to have poor maintenance tracking procedures or not care for lead acid batteries in the manner recommended by the lead acid battery manufacturer.

Time Kills a Battery: Time and tide wait for no-one. And the same is the case with a battery. Whether you use it or not, the battery will deteriorate with time and eventually die. This is due to factors like increased internal resistance, loss of electrolyte, crystallization of electrodes, etc. The time effect was described by Arrhenius and is widely used by battery designers in estimating the life cycle of a battery. You need to remember that a battery will self-discharge itself even when idle.

Temperature Effects: Temperature affects both performance and life cycle of a battery (Battery and Temperature). Arrhenius Law also describes how a rise temperature speeds up the chemical reactions inside the battery. So whether you are using the battery or not, higher temperature means faster reactions and hence quicker discharge of the battery.

A rechargeable battery has a finite life cycle before it becomes unusable. You can extend this by proper maintenance, correct operating temperature, and regular but correct use.

How Can You Increase Battery Life?

Once you begin to understand how different factors impact your battery’s life cycle, it becomes clearer how you can increase your battery’s life. Following some simple “best practices” can help you get the most out of your battery, regardless of whether it’s a lead-acid or lithium-ion battery.

As much as possible, use your battery in moderate temperatures. Of course, this may not always be possible. It is optimal to store, charge, and discharge your battery in temperatures near 25 degrees C.

If you have a lead-acid battery, minimize how often you discharge the battery below 50% of its capacity. Ideally, the depth of discharge on each cycle should be between 10% and 50%. If you have a lithium battery, you can likely go down to 80% DOD and, in some cases, 100% DOD. Refer to your battery manufacturer’s recommendation to be safe.

Additionally, if you have a flooded lead-acid battery, make sure to keep the electrolyte solution topped off. Lastly, charging your battery slowly can help keep the internal resistance lower and extend your battery life as well.

A growing population, very few new dams being built, ageing infrastructure and a renewed commitment to providing free water allocations to our indigent population placed relentless upward pressure on the cost of water to our homes and businesses.

Consumers are now tasked with saving and monitoring their usage of water as part of the \new normal’. There are always solutions to assist municipal water consumers in controlling their consumption and this Water Consumption Monitor is cost effective and powerful.

As the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan area marches towards Day Zero tempers are getting frayed, tank suppliers are working overtime and the Municipality sits back expecting a huge windfall from citizens.

Yup, a huge windfall from punitive tariffs AND from ‘non-existent’ sewage charges. The sewage tariff is an absolute mystery to me but my assumption is that as the charge is based on a percentage of the amount of metered water the situation has to be that sewage costs are over inflated in households collecting shower, bath, kitchen sink and other water for recycling and NOT flushing that water into our sewage system.

Lets examine Part C of the Municipal Water Tariffs.

The tariffs for a domestic user under Part C (2021/22 prices including VAT) per kl consumed are:

• Step 1 (>0 ? 0,3 kl/d) – R23.93
• Step 2 (> 0,3 ? 0,5 kl/d) – R36.57
• Step 3 (>0,5? 0.8 kl/d) – R73.14
• Step 4 (>0.8 ? 1,0 kl/d) – R121.90
• Step 5 (>1,0 ? 1,6 kl/d) – R182.85
• Step 6 (>1.6kl/d) – R365.70

Let’s examine the effect of a 1500 litre per month dripping tap leak pushing the consumer into a higher Step on the above tariffs;

• Step 1 consumer will pay R170.27 EXTRA
• Step 2 consumer will pay R666.26 EXTRA
• Step 3 consumer will pay R1370.16 EXTRA
• Step 4 consumer will pay R2129.44 EXTRA
• Step 5 consumer will pay R9453.35 EXTRA
• Step 6 consumer will continue paying R365.70 PER kl or R548.55 EXTRA

The above figures are based on an average month of 30.4375 days and the consumer consuming the limit in each step with the dripping tap amount of 1500 litres added to the total and charged at the next highest Stepped tariff.

What are the safeguards against this:

• The cheapest solution is to check your taps, toilets and piping every day for leaks.
• Read your water meter every hour if possible.
• Install rainwater harvesting systems.
• Install private pre-paid water meters to flatlets and other sections of your home/business.
• Make use of a Live Water Meter Monitor such as the AUSiot-Monitor.

After another hugely successful Karoo Food Festival, the annual celebration of traditional delicacies is beginning to stake its claim as an event with a national footprint.

The festival took place in Cradock from April 29 to May 1 and co-organiser Lisa Ker said they were “absolutely gob-smacked and thrilled about how things went”.

Besides the chance to sample Karoo specialities such as skaapstertjies, skilpadjies, roosterkoek, koeksisters and Bokfeintein Sushi from the food stalls which lined the streets, there was entertainment and fun aplenty for young and old.

“We had so much support from the local community, both in terms of joining in the fun and setting up stalls. That really made it take off this year,” said Ker.

“There were also people who came from as far afield as Pretoria and the biggest thing for us is that we are now getting returnees to the festival.

“It is more than just a local footprint; the success of the festival means that word is spreading to other parts of the country and I am confident it will only get bigger.”

With Market Street closed off to traffic on opening night, festivalgoers set themselves at tables in the road to enjoy some of the Karoo’s finest fare.

“It’s really about having fun and enjoying what we have to offer,” she added.

“We had musicians from Gqeberha, local Chris Britz with his special brand of boeremusiek, an amazing play area for kids and great competitions such as the potjiekos contest on Saturday night and the 21km and 5km runs on Sunday.

“We had about 45 stallholders on Friday night, which increased to 70 on Saturday in glorious weather and the whole festival just hummed.”

Ker was emphatic that the success of this food extravaganza would not have been complete without the input of SPAR Eastern Cape, who supported the event.

“I can honestly say that is the bottom line, because it would not have been the success it was without them.

“It’s not that they just support us financially. They become involved in the whole exercise, giving us freely of their expertise in hosting big events of this nature and using the occasion to promote their campaigns of environmental awareness and the fight against gender-based violence.

For example, said Ker, the T-shirts provided to the workers had been made entirely of discarded plastic.

“They also placed bins all over the area to emphasise the message of cleaning up our environment.

“We are truly grateful for their willingness to become involved in community-based projects and linking up with us has had massive benefits for the whole festival offering.”

SPAR EC sponsorships and events manager Alan Stapleton said it was a pleasure to be part of the Karoo Food Festival.

“One of our key pillars is to support the local community and it really was fantastic to link up with our friends in Cradock and the greater Karoo region for a memorable event,” he said.

A wide range of live entertainment will add to the festivities at the Karoo Food Festival, supported by SPAR Eastern Cape, in Cradock next weekend.

Lisa Ker, who is part of the organising committee, said they were excited to include variety in the three-day programme, which starts on April 30.

The objective of the occasion is to give festivalgoers a chance to taste traditional Karoo fare, but Ker said it extended beyond that as they used all the resources of the local community to provide a weekend to remember.

Besides sampling Karoo delicacies, there will be a trail run, cooking demonstrations, potjiekos competition and entertainment that includes everything from mime artists to a karaoke evening.

“Live music and various forms of entertainment have always been part of our programme,” Ker said.

“Adding to the rural nature of our festival, we had musos playing on the back of a big truck last year.”

With Kelston Motor Group sponsoring the entertainment tent, it therefore comes as no surprise that the automotive aspect is entrenched in this year’s Karoo Food Festival.

Ker said the entertainment tent would be surrounded by all kinds of food and drinks stalls, but one side would be set up for the potjiekos competition on Sunday, which has a first prize of R2 500.

Kelston marketing manager Bev Venter said they were involved for the first time this year.

“We were approached by the organisers and as we have many dealerships in the Karoo region, from Graaff-Reinet to Queenstown, it was only natural that we would want to be part of such an important community event,” she said.

“Simply put, we are Eastern Capers at heart – and proudly so. We love the Eastern Cape and everything about it and we understand the people – we are them!”

Venter added that they would have active displays of eight of the group’s vehicle brands at the market in the town centre on the Friday evening and around the entertainment tent on Saturday and Sunday.

The festival’s core theme is to provide festivalgoers, both local and from out of town, the opportunity to taste the traditional dishes associated with the region and, in particular, the world-renowned Karoo lamb.

But, said co-organiser Lisa Ker, the festival’s concept was wider than just sampling Karoo delicacies.

“This is a platform to attract people to our town and to bring the local community together, which is something a food festival can do,” she said.

Ker, whose family run accommodation establishments in Cradock, is a member of the local voluntary organisation that hosts the festival.

“Obviously, the centrepiece comprises the food stalls, but we have tapped into the broader community to offer other activities.

“For instance, we have linked up with Old Mutual, who are organising a trail and social run, while we also profile local cooks and chefs, who provide demonstrations and talks on their skills.

“There are opportunities to go canoeing or to play golf or tennis, so we use all our local resources to make it a community-focused occasion.”

SPAR EC sponsorships and events manager Alan Stapleton said it was “wonderful” to be able to move into the country and support their communities away from the cities in initiatives like plastic pollution awareness.

“It is close to our hearts,” he emphasised. “And bringing communities together in a spirit of fun and camaraderie is always special.”

Ker said that it was essential to involve the whole community and therefore the 70 to 80 store holders each employed about four people.

“It’s an opportunity to promote the town and the trendy topic of Karoo food, but also to give members of our community a purpose through the employment opportunities which exist and to give them hope.

“We assist in training these people in the workings of a festival and then we are able to use them at other functions or similar occasions during the year.”

She paid tribute to the support provided by both SPAR EC head office and the retail outlet in Cradock.

“Without them it’s doubtful that we would have been able to sustain this festival,” she added.

“Alan Stapleton (SPAR EC sponsorships and events manager) has such a passion for developing the community, in particularly job creation, and it is really wonderful to have them on board.

“Through their support, we have been able to provide T-shirts for the festival workers, make rubbish bins available and create a system of using recyclable containers which ties in with SPAR’s drive to protect the natural environment.

“We strive to run the festival as professionally as possible and SPAR has really helped us with marketing and ensuring that the stores operate smoothly.”

Ker, who is also involved with the writers’ festival in the town, said they had started out with low expectations but were excited at the growth of the event.

“Literally whatever is authentic and important in the Karoo food-wise will be on offer and it is getting bigger.

“This time we are up to about 80 store holders and previous festivals have brought in R2-million to the town’s economy. This year I’m expecting it to be more.

“People come here because they have very specific ideas of what they want to taste, while we encourage young entrepreneurs to become involved.

“There are opportunities such as the potjiekos competition to display your culinary skills, all of which take place in a safe and gentle environment driven by the local community.”
