The Nelson Mandela Bay Half Marathon is back in full force and EP Athletics is gearing up for well over one thousand athletes to line up at Pollok Beach, Summerstrand, on June 3. Race Director, Michael Mbambani, is looking forward to hosting the 9th NMB Half Marathon.

“With the support of our title sponsors, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, we are expecting around 1500 local, national and international elite athletes to gather in Gqeberha – our City of action,” Mbambani said. “Our team is working towards delivering an incredible and competitive event with outstanding results which will be broadcast live on SuperSport. The race, which holds World Athletics Elite Label status, will also serve as the ASA Half Marathon National Championships.”

The event received high praise from Athletic SA’s president, James Moloi. “We must applaud the organisers of the Nelson Mandela Bay Half Marathon which incorporates the ASA Half Marathon Championships for being one of the best organised races of the 21.1km distance not only in the country but in the world.”

After a thrilling finish last year Lesotho’s Namakoe Nkhasi won in his new personal best time of 1:01:01, narrowly beating hometown favourite Melikhaya Frans by seconds. Frans smashed his lifetime best by over a minute as he set a new Eastern Province Athletics record and won his first national title in 1:01:03.

Both Namakoe and Melikhaya will be on the startline, with hot competition from Kenya’s Kipkemoi Kiprono and Ethiopia’s Dinkalem Ayele, who are looking to improve on their fast personal best times. Desmond Zibi, of Ikhamva athletics club, will have the EPA record of 1.12.30 in his sights, which he narrowly missed in 2022.

Last year the woman’s race was dominated by Ethiopia’s Ftaw Zeray who led from gun to tape to claim the victory in 1:06:57, but will not be competing this year. Confirmed competitors are Genet Habela Abdurkadir, of Ethiopia, who is looking forward to improving her personal best time of 1.12.57 when she last competed in the 2018 edition of the Half Marathon, recent winner of the Two Oceans Half Marathon, her first attempt at this distance, Emma Pallant, who is looking to push for a faster time in Gqeberha, and Ethiopia’s Chaltu Bedo, who boasts a personal best half marathon time of 1.11.50.

So the race is set for another spectacular finish with top local, national and international athletes competing on South African soil.

Impressed by the fast times and quality of the race MMC Bassie Kamana, responsible for Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture, gave the race the thumbs up.

At stake is not only the South African title, but also valuable World Athletics Ranking points and a whopping R80 000 for first prize and a total prize pot of R553 000, with the additional bonus of R152 100 for ASA Championship prize money. No wonder South Africa’s best are lining up to race in Gqeberha.

The race is justifiably credited as the fastest half marathon in the country and with generous prize money one can expect fast times. The route is fast and flat and runs on the coastal road. Runners will start from 07.00 and complete a circular route. Starting from Marine Drive, at Pollock Beach, they will head north to Driftsands junction, then south on Marine drive through NMU, down Admiralty road with the second lap turning at Driftsands junction to return to finish at Pollock Beach. A full rolling closure from 05h00 will ensure a safe run and minimum inconvenience to the public.

Athletes can enter online on www.webtickets.co.za or at major sports stores. The first 400 athletes, excluding provincial teams, to collect their race numbers will receive a special Nike T-shirt, and all finishers will receive a medal. Closing date for online and manual entries will be on Monday, 28 May 2023.

Collection of race numbers as well as late entries, will be available at registration at Oyster Catcher venue, Southern Sun The Marine Hotel, Summerstrand, from Thursday, 1 June, from 12h00 to 18h00 and from 12h00 to 20h00 on Friday, 2 June. No collection of race numbers will be allowed on the morning of the event.

Sassa Grant For South African citizen

The South African Social Security Agency administers various social grants to provide financial assistance to eligible individuals and families who are in need. These grants are designed to alleviate poverty.

SASSA administers seven types of social grants, which are:

1. Child Support Grant – a monthly grant paid to the caregiver of a child.
2. Old Age Grant – a monthly grant paid to individuals aged 60 who are not receiving any other form of social grant.
3. Disability Grant – a monthly grant paid to individuals who have special disabilities.
4. Foster Child Grant – a monthly grant paid to foster parents or caregivers of children who have been placed in their care by a court.
5. Care Dependency Grant – a monthly grant paid to individuals who suffer from a severe disability.
6. Grant-in-Aid – a monthly grant paid to individuals who can not support themselves due to a chronic illness or disability.
7. Social Relief of Distress Grant – a temporary grant paid to eligible individuals and families due to a crisis such as a natural disaster, death in the family, or loss of income.

Sassa Grant application process:

If you’re aged between 18 and 60 and don’t have any income, you can apply for the Special Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant. The South African government has reintroduced the grant of R350 per month to help eligible applicants who are struggling financially and have bitter circumstances due to the pandemic. If you’re an eligible individual, you can apply for the grant through a straightforward process. In this article, we’ll discuss the application process for the SASSA R350 grant.

Who is Eligible for the SASSA R350 Grant?

To qualify for the SASSA R350 grant, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Many years ago we based MyPE on a hyper focussed Business Directory which gave a lot of local businesses a lot of work – mostly on the back of our free promotion.

Then Google realised that directories such as ours were ‘taking business away from them’ and de-indexed many directories from their Search Engine.

At the time it was a massive blow as we monetised via Google Adsense and some paid for advertising and listings but the bulk came from Google Adsense.

Since then we have hung on to the dream that we could still build a relevant business resource that would become a powerhouse for the city that we love so dearly.

Of course another blow to ‘local domination’ was the name change from Port Elizabeth to Gqeberha – which again cost us a bucket load of cash in missed opportunities and basically forced us to start all over again with a new domain – MyGqeberha.com.

All through this time we had in the back of our minds an online resource that would offer business a comprehensive listing portal that presented ALL relevant buying decision information, images, video, social media and contact info ON ONE PAGE that was presentable and not too advert heavy (after all we have to make SOME money to pay for our time, hosting and development).

PLUS we wanted to be able to expand from JUST A DIRECTORY to a RESOURCE that not only offered free listings but also offered a Job Portal, a Digital Marketplace, a Discussion Area, the Abilty to Compare and/or Rank Listings, an Events Calendar (and booking facility), Live Chat, Classified Ads, a Post Your Need Facility, Easy to Admin Business Hours, Listings Claim Facility, an Area for Business owners to Share Knowledge and more.

And we have embarked on the slow build for this new MEGA Business Site with MyGQ.co.za

Our ‘guinea pig’ site was Trades.co.za and once we have all the building blocks in place for MyGQ.co.za we will move onto MyZA.co.za and give that site the same treatment – only with a focus on South Africa.

ANELE MDODA, AYANDA THABETHE & JASON GOLIATH CELEBRATE SHOW’S RETURN, PREMIERING ON E! AFRICA & UNIVERSAL+

In the lead up to the much-anticipated return of E! Africa’s Celebrity Game Night, host Anele Mdoda came together with fans – along with team captains Ayanda Thabethe and Jason Goliath – to enjoy a preview screening of the first episode in Johannesburg. The fourth installment of the SAFTA award-winning series premieres weekly from Sunday 23 April at 19:00 CAT on E! Africa (DStv channel 124), with episodes available on Universal+ immediately after.

Speaking at the screening event, Mdoda shared her passion for the popular series: “Just when we think that we can’t have any more fun, Celebrity Game Night finds a way to bring in bigger games and new celebrities. Me, Jason and Ayanda have become more than just friends, we’re now siblings who have the most amount of FUN and it beams through in the new season!”

Team captain Ayanda Thabethe commented: “I consider it a privilege and an honour to be part of Celebrity Game Night. What we have NOT done is a comparison between the different levels of technical support offered by the various manufacturers. Being without a battery for any length of time in South Africa translates to pain and lost money.

BUT, we can say that for Nelson Mandlea Bay residents (Gqeberha, Kariega and Despatch) their needs when it comes to Sunsynk batteries will be attended to by a local business providing technical support and repairs to all local suppliers and installers.

Sunsynk identified that they needed a Sunsynk Technical Support center in Nelson Mandela Bay and appointed Straton Solar to do the support on behalf of local suppliers and installers.

Any Sunsynk Lithium-Ion battery that goes faulty can now be serviced locally – offering quicker turnaround times.

The technical center is a B2B center and only deals with local suppliers who sell Sunsynk Batteries to local installers. In other words, if you have a Sunsynk Battery with a problem then your local installer will package it up and either drop the battery off with the supplier or get authorisation to drop it off directly at the Technical Center.

The Motherwell Freedom run will celebrate it’s eleventh edition on Saturday, 22 April.

The event is the initiative of Michael Mbambani, coach and founder of Ikhamva athletics club, who with the support of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, organised the first Freedom Run on 2 April, 2011. The 11 th edition will incorporate the EPA 10km championships.

“The race will start and finish at the Raymond Mhlaba Sport Centre in Motherwell, Gqeberha with a strong winner’s purse of R7000, free T-shirts for the first 300 entrants and medals for all finishers within the cut-off time,” said Mbambani.

“We are looking forward to a fantastic race and expect a fast and exciting finish,” he added.

Melikhaya Frans successfully defended his title at the 10th edition of the Nelson Mandela Bay Freedom Run last year, crossing the finish line in 28.39, improving on his 2019 time of 29.08.

Mayoral committee member, Bassie Kamana, responsible for Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture, has endorsed the event.

“Achieving a ten-year track record is no mean feat, we applaud this accomplishment of the Freedom run.

“What is remarkable is that this race represents the inclusive oneness that running creates, uniting people of all races, ages and levels of fitness, in the Motherwell township.

“We are proud to be associated with professional events like the Freedom Run,” added Kamana.

The Freedom Run has grown each year from 176 entries in 2011, and organisers are expecting a strong turnout of runners to start at 07h00 from the Raymond Mhlaba Sport Centre in Motherwell.

The 10km is an EPA participation league event which will attract many local clubs and a number of high-profile national athletes who are keen to compete on this fast route.

Athletes can enter at Brian Bands, The Footballer, Sportsmans Warehouse and UD Sports until pre-entries close at 14h00 on Wednesday, 19 April 2022.

Online entries on www.webtickets.co.za will be accepted until Tuesday, 18 April.

Entry fees are R100 for 10km, and athletes over 60 years will receive a 50% discount. Temporary licenses will cost R40.

Collection of race numbers (pre-entries) and late entries will be accepted from 14h00 until 18h00 on Friday, 21 April 2023 at the EP Athletics office, Westbourne Oval, Westbourne Road. Late entries and race number collection will be received on race day from 06h00 to 06h15.

The cut off time for the 10km is 100 minutes, at 08h40.

Solar panels are a commodity that can be stolen – often clients fail to see any missing and only discover their loss after interrogating their system as to why the expected yield is so low.

First let’s look at a few reasons why you cannot just replace a stolen solar panel with just any solar panel:

Most inverters are MPPT. MPPT or Maximum Power Point Tracking is an algorithm included in charge controllers used for extracting maximum available power from PV modules under certain conditions.

Most inverters for domestic use have two MPPT’s and the solar panels will be connected in two strings to the inverter.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems generate electricity via the photovoltaic effect – whenever sunlight knocks electrons loose in the silicon materials that make up solar PV cells. It follows then that any shading will reduce the output of any solar panel. In fact in his book, Renewable Energy and Efficient Electric Power Systems, Stanford University’s Gil Masters demonstrates how shading just one out of 36 cells in a small solar module can reduce total power output by as much as 75%.

The shading on a single solar panel is the “weakest link,” reducing all the remaining cells’ power availability. By the same token if you have 6 Solar Panels in a string and one is stolen then that “weakest link” will pull down the entire strings production – a chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link.

Electricity production from solar panels degrade by around 1% per year.

That follows then that when purchasing Solar Panels you have to be very cogniscant of:

• Make sure that all solar panels are of the same make, type and size
• Make sure that all solar panels are manufactured at the same time
• Make sure that you have NO shading on any part of the strings

Any deviation from the above will lead to a compromise of production which, over many years, will cost you lots of money in failed production.

If one or more of your Solar Panels is stolen then you need to make sure that your system is covered along with the Solar Panels.

Insurance companies differ in how they will approach a claim for stolen solar panel/s with some saying that if they cannot replace with the same then they will replace ALL, whilst others say that they will replace with the closest to the original. What these companies have not factored in is the degradation of 1% per year and still need to take into consideration that in the space of 10 years generally available solar panel sizes have increased from 180 watts to 550 watts.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE YOUR SOLAR PANELS ARE STOLEN?

“When purchasing your system buy another 3 or 4 solar panels – of the same type, wattage and date of manufacture of those installed – to keep in storage. And, if the dreaded thieves make off with a few of your panels then you can at least come to an arrangement with your insurance company to ‘sell’ your spares to them,” says Straton Solar.

The LiGE Compressed air energy storage (CAES) is about to be installed in a number of sites after being introduced to Australia by Queensland-based Essential Water and Energy Services thereby unlocking the potential of CAES as a scalable energy storage system for clean intermittent sources with a long lifespan and low-cost.

CAES is not a new technology, of course. The first system (290 MW) was installed at Huntorf, Germany, in 1978 and is still in operation today. The best players in the province will be in action in the five regional tournaments of the annual SPAR Eastern Cape Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge, which starts this weekend and culminates in May.

National tournament director Les Galloway said they had introduced a slight change this year to allow them to raise the profile of the regionals.

The event has been a regular on the schools hockey calendar since its inception in 2016, being derailed only by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

In previous years, the winners of the regional tournaments qualified for the provincial finals, but Galloway said they had done away with that tournament this year.

“There are various reasons for that decision and one of them is that we would like to raise the profile of the regionals instead of spending a big part of the budget on the provincial finals,” she explained.

“The whole vision of the Challenge is to reach as many schools as possible in all areas and we are very close to achieving that. It is exciting and it shows that schoolgirls’ hockey is alive and well.”

Galloway added that this change would allow them to raise the status of the regional events and therefore create an even bigger incentive for schools to sign up.

“Rather than just focusing on the provincial finalists, which covers just five schools, we want to provide a memorable experience at all the tournaments, in which up to 50 schools can be involved.

“We had a long discussion with SPAR and came up with this decision because, really, the regionals are what it is all about and we want to reach all corners of the Eastern Cape to give everyone an opportunity.”

She cited the case of Umtata High School who debuted in the competition last year when they competed in the East London Inland tournament in Queenstown.

“They put their hands up and it was so good to be able to include them as this is exactly what we are trying to achieve.”

Another factor in streamlining the competition was the full calendar many schools had with their traditional derby days and interschool fixtures, said Galloway.

“The Challenge is still very high on the schools’ programmes, but we work closely with them because we understand their commitments and it does lead to a challenge sometimes to arrange dates.

“It is a prestigious event that has built traction over the years,” according to her. “So now you have pupils who were in Grade 8 or 9 a few years ago, watching from the sidelines, looking forward to competing.”

“That’s obviously important for us as it provides greater exposure for all players.”

Galloway said a number of participants over the years had gone on to higher honours.

The first tournament is hosted by Union High in Graaff-Reinet on Sunday.

Defending champions DSG will take the approach of being the underdogs when the SPAR Eastern Cape Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge kicks off in Graaff-Reinet on Sunday.

This is the view of DSG captain Laura Campbell as the Makhanda school strive to land the Gqeberha North regional title for a fourth time.

The first of five regional events in the Eastern and Southern Cape will be hosted by Union High and feature eight schools, divided into two pools, vying for the coveted title.

Besides their victory a year ago, DSG were also crowned regional champions in 2016 and 2019, but Campbell said the past did not count for much this weekend.

“The whole squad is very excited and hopefully we can take the title again, but we know it will not be easy,” said the 17-year-old matric pupil.

“It’s difficult to say who will be the main rivals because teams change every year and you never know what to expect.

“We will just go in there with the mindset of being the underdogs and being prepared to work for every scoring opportunity.”

Campbell, who plays right-back, said the shorter format of the competition (matches are played over 20 minutes) created extra pressure.

“But my message to our team is that you just have to go into every game not worrying about what happened in the last match or what is to come.

“It’s a matter of staying in the moment and focusing only on the next thing you have to do.

“This is our first tournament of the year so I think it’s important not to worry too much about making mistakes because we have time to work on those sorts of things.”

The inaugural SPAR Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge took place in 2016 and this year a slight change has been introduced. The provincial finals, which were contested by the five regional champions, have been scrapped in favour of boosting the status of the regionals.

For Campbell, though, the thrill of being part of the tournament is unmatched.

“I played in it for the first time last year and I really do enjoy the shorter format and the whole vibe of the occasion.

“The main thing is that you get to meet a lot of different players because the way the day is structured allows more schools to enter.”

The music and announcer added another fun element to the day, said Campbell.

For the six months to December 2022, Sasfin’s total income increased by 12.62% to R705.203 million (2021: R626.179 million) mainly due to strong loan book growth. The strong income growth improved the cost-to-income ratio to 76.30% (2021: 80.40%) despite cost growth of 6.88% to R538.068 million (2021: R503.430 million). Headline earnings reduced by 20.74% to R67.706 million (2021: R85.424 million) as a result of an increase in the credit loss ratio to 130bps (2021: 23bps).

Total assets increased 10.56% to R13.573 billion (2021: R12.277 billion) as a result of strong growth of 24.21% in net loans and advances to R8.963 billion (2021: R7.216 billion). Core funding increased by 5.17% to R9.492 billion (2021: R9.025 billion) as deposits from customers increased to R5.941 billion (2021: R5.560 billion). Total ordinary shareholders’ equity increased by 7.66% to R1.713 billion (2021: R1.591 billion).

“The Group has experienced strong growth in loans and advances,” said Harriet Heymans, Group Financial Director, Sasfin Holdings Limited. “The loan growth was primarily in well-secured loan portfolios. • Time for a uniquely African solution to EV’s and Loadshedding

We are all familiar with the naysayer point of view to Electric Vehicles (EV) in Africa: “With loadshedding you will not be able to fill up!” or “EV’s will lead to massive job losses!”

BUT, I beg to differ as those ‘sentiments’ play directly to an opportunity for the savvy motor manufacturer.

In a nutshell:

1. Define a new market
2. Fill an emerging basic need
3. What the package looks like
4. What about saving job losses?
5. What kind of vehicle?
6. What about losses from the parts basket?

Define a new market: The first thing traditional auto manufacturers will need to do is recognise that they are not exclusively IN automotive manufacture but part of a number of industries – tow of the most important being energy and manufacturing.

Fill an emerging basic need: Secondly auto manufacturers are in a very unique position to be able to sell not only a vehicle for transport but also a portable power plant for loadshedding. Vehicle to Grid (V2G) or even just Vehicle to Premises technology makes the value proposition for an automotive manufacturer huge. V2G opens up entry into te energy provision ecosystem. Instead of installing a loadshedding back up system in one’s home AND purchasing an EV – a V2G EV vehicle owner can merely plug his vehicle into his/her home when loadshedding strikes.

What the package looks like: Auto manufacturers could package a vehicle with Solar Panels, Wall Mounted Charger and (optional) inverter for the home/premises. This would open up more markets and loosely follow the entire Tesla Ecosystem of EV’s, Batteries, Solar Roof Tiles etc. Upsells could include home batteries, additional solar panels, additional renewable energy products like power banks etc.

What about saving job losses: More items in the basket will demand more skills transfer and more people able to fit and sign off on the solar panels, charger and/or inverter supplied with the vehicle purchase. This will offset job losses – only not in the immediate area of the automotive factory.

What kind of vehicle: Personally I would purchase a simple vehicle like a Suzuki Jimny (as an EV) – rugged, no frills, go-anywhere and already at a high price point to ‘kickstart’ the number of vehicles needed to make any production line profitable. The vehicle would have to be aspirational, rugged, good value for money AND make a huge case for the added benefits of being a portable power plant.

What about losses from the parts basket: Manufacturers have a built in ‘recurring’ revenue stream from the sale of after market parts. One example – EV motors have about 20 moving parts, compared to nearly 2 000 in an Internal Combustion Engined Vehicle. Auto Manufacturers could embark on a programme of monthly support monitoring the vehicle and solar installation and offer useful tips to maximise production and save money based on driving and living habits. Licensing of the technology. Paid advertising from Mapping Software. The massive amount of personal and operational data could be used to effect further savings and sales of new and improved product.

Every motor manufacturer has a production level that makes EV lines profitable – some quote a number approaching 300 000 units per annum. In a country like South Africa we do not have one manufacturer hitting even close to that number. For example a company like Volkswagen in Kariega produced 147 000 units last year and has a capacity to produce in the region of 172 000 units. So it could take a while for VWSA to produce a profitable line.

Consider too that South Africa’s auto manufacturers compete on a global scale – not only against other brands but also against their own brands. A company like VWSA has 121 maufacturing facilities dotted around the globe and each competes to manufacture and distribute vehicles for the Mother Ship in Wolfsburg – this is what keeps them highly profitable.

The solution then lies in one or more auto manufacturer/s to supply directly into Africa with an African focussed vehicle that solves a number of problems at once and, to my mind, a no frills V2G, 4×4 EV is the way to go.

“It has been our experience that people who purchase EV’s invariably also purchase Solar thereafter so selling a ‘portable renewable energy plant on wheels’ makes absolute sense,” says Straton Solar.

The beautiful coastal stretch of Marine Drive will be abuzz of excitement on Sunday morning as the third edition of the Nedbank Runified Breaking Barriers 50km returns to the friendly city of Gqeberha.

With three world records and many world bests and national and continental records set in the previous two editions, the 2023 edition wants to continue this trend and yet another world class field has arrived in Nelson Mandela Bay. “I am very pleased with the elite field that has assembled this year,” said Race Director Nick Bester. “We have a very strong line-up with many international runners also making their ultra-marathon debuts, so we are set for a good and exciting race.”

Ensuring that the athletes stay on pace, Bester has contracted a number of pacemakers in both the men’s and women’s races whose main purpose will be to set a pace fast enough for a new world record. “In the men’s race we have 4 pacers which will be led by local start Melikhaya Frans, and they will be going off at a tempo of 3:09 – 3:10 per km which will equate to a 2:37:30.” The current ratified world record was set in last year’s race with South African Stephen Mokoka running 2:40:13.

American CJ Albertson then ran 2:38:44 but this time is still to be ratified by World Athletics.

“In the women’s race we will have two pacers consisting of Nedbank runners Stella Marais and Helalia Johannes,” said Bester. “Their task is to set a pace of 3:40 per km which will give them a projected finish of 3:03:19.” The current women’s only world record was set in the first edition of the Nedbank Runified Breaking Barriers 50km by Irvette van Zyl who ran 3:04:24. In last year’s event Amelework Bosho just missed out when she crossed the line in 3:04:58.

To add to the excitement of the race, pacers are allowed to finish the race and count for the over R1 million in prize money on offer. This could provide a twist in the story, with an athlete like Johannes who is a Commonwealth Games Marathon champion more than capable of pulling it off. One just has to think back to 2021 where van Zyl was a pacemaker and after 30km decided to continue and run away with a new world record.

World Athletics technical official and internationally recognised route measurer Norrie Williamson believes that there are many records that could be set on Sunday. “There are almost 90 possible records that could be set when one considers all the different categories there are on offer,” said Williamson. “Remember that with a world record set, this alone can be a new continental world best, national record, age group best, etc.”

It is all systems go for the event which will be broadcasted live on SuperSport Variety 4 on Sunday morning. “The team has done a fantastic job at ensuring that on Sunday we give the athletes another world class event,” said Bester. “All we hope is that the weather is kind to the athletes which will allow them to contend for records.” To help with that, organisers also moved forward the start times to assist the athletes. “Compared to the previous 2 editions, we brought the start times earlier for both the men and women to beat the heat on the day.”

The NMB Conferences team consists of Caroline Morgan, Melissa Palmer and Natasha Carmody. These three are well-connected in the local industry, variously being members of SAACI, NMBBEA, The Event Greening Forum and other industry organisations.

Despite being freshly-formed, NMB Conferences has already run a successful site visit and supplier session for a prospective client, and are pleased to announce that the Public Health Association will be coming to Nelson Mandela Bay for its 2023 conference.

It attracts large numbers of professionals and academics to our city for conferences, meetings, and events, leading to increased demand for local accommodation, transportation, dining, and entertainment.”, says co-founder Melissa Palmer.
