Discovery Vitality has partnered with Rafi’s Appliances and Mattresses to bring the popular National Vitality Series to Gqeberha on Saturday.

The Rafi’s BayRun will be hosted by 32Gi and Achilles Athletics clubs on Saturday, 21 October, and will start and finish at Cape Recife High School.

Collection of race numbers and late entries will be available at Rafi’s Appliances and Mattresses store at 2 West Street, Newton Park, from 16.00 to 19.00, this week on both Thursday, and Friday evenings, 19 and 20 October, as well as from 05.00 at Cape Recife High School on race day.

The first 350 runners to register or enter on both Thursday and Friday evenings will receive free Rafi’s BayRun race T-shirts and the chance to win Rafi’s shopping vouchers which will be drawn every 30 minutes instore on both evenings.

The Vitality Run Series was introduced in 2017, with the aim to help people improve their fitness through physical activity. The Series has over the years offered iconic events in the Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and recently launched the George Series and the upcoming Gqeberha Series. The series is open to anyone, and Vitality members earn Vitality points for participating in races.

The Rafi’s BayRun will offer three flat and scenic distances, 21km, 10km and a fun 5km. All three distances will be timed, and all finishers will receive a Rafi’s BayRun with Discovery Vitality Series medal.

“We’d love to see over 1000 runners taking on the three distances,” said race director, Jonathan Mandell of 32Gi athletics club, who is keen to see the event grow with both Rafi’s and Discovery Vitality’s support.

Local Event Sponsor, Rafi Selvilya, of Rafi’s Appliances and Mattresses, is an avid supporter of living a healthy lifestyle and has been sponsoring local running events for many years. “We invite all runners, the serious, the fun runners and walkers to join our event,” said Rafi.

The event program will start with the 21km at 06.00, the 5km at 06.05, the 10km at 06.20, and the prize giving will be held at 09.30.

Club Gazebos are welcome and encouraged. Runners will be able to enjoy a social warm-up and cool down zone in the race village from Virgin Active as well as coffee, boerewors rolls and pancakes at the finish.

Three Directors of the 12-member Eastern Province Cricket Board have been removed through a unanimous board decision on the basis of the findings of two inquiries headed by retired judges.

They are Mr Rafiek Potgieter, Mrs Dai Tai Marais and Mr Leon Miggels.

This follows a finding by Judge B M Ngoepe on behalf of Cricket South Africa (CSA) which cleared the present and former Eastern Province Cricket (EPC) Board members and officials of claims of impropriety made by the three regarding the establishment of Mega Sportz NPC.

In a separate process, the Pillay Disciplinary Committee under retired judge Ronnie Pillay found that “the actions of all three either individually, or together deprives the Board from operating as it should.

“The behaviour, in many ways, constitute conduct unbecoming of company directors.

“The disrespect for other Board members, attending illegal meetings, interfering with the status of the president especially in the absence of any objection to the election process and his election as president.

“It clearly suggests the existence of a secret or malfeasant agenda which is a threat to the business of the Board.”

The board resolution to dismiss the Directors was passed on October 5.

“EP Cricket can now focus on growing support for the game in the Eastern Cape,” said EP Cricket President Makhandan Leon Coetzee.

“We want to have winning teams at all levels

“Notwithstanding the attempts by the former Directors to portray EPC, the other former and existing Directors and EPC officials in a negative light in the media, Mega Sportz NPC has initiated and secured major sponsorships for the benefit of cricket in the region. Since becoming operational in September 2022, it continues to focus on the implementation of EPC’s Financial Sustainability Programme.

“These include the securing of DAFABET as a naming rights sponsor for the DAFABET St Georges Stadium as well as the DAFABET Warriors for a three year term, managing successfully the first season of the SA20 competition and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as well as non-cricket events that includes US Embassy Program, IsiXhosa Music Festival”.

Judge Pillay was assisted by Mr Albert Beyleveld SC and Mr Idris Dala, both of the Eastern Cape Society of Advocates.
The Committee, which first met on July 10, 2023, found that all three board members had contravened a number of provisions in the EPC MOI, Board Charter and the Companies Act.

These included disrupting board meetings, breach of trust in relation to the performance of a director’s function and communicating with the media without a mandate from the board since October 2022.

The findings echo similar findings by CSA.

In response to appeals by the dismissed directors for CSA to intervene, the Chief Executive Officer of CSA, Mr Pholetsi Moseki, mandated Judge B M Ngoepe, (Retired Judge President) in May 2023 to look into disputes “between two groups of Directors of Eastern Province Cricket (EPC).

Judge B M Ngoepe, on behalf of CSA, cleared Eastern Province Cricket (EPC) Board members, former board members and officials of claims of impropriety made by the three regarding the establishment of Mega Sportz NPC, an affiliate company of EPC established to provide stadium management functions at St Georges Park, identify other commercial activities to increase income and secure sponsorships for the benefit of EPC and its professional Warriors cricket team.

It operates under a further affiliate company of EPC being Cricket Eastern Cape (Pty) Ltd.

Member clubs of EPC had mandated it to establish Mega Sportz NPC with experienced Directors to fulfil a role enabling EPC to focus on improving amateur cricket in the region.

Further Issues raised by the dismissed board members included the validity of a recordal agreement regarding the hire of the St George’s Park Cricket Stadium between Eastern Province Cricket (NPC), Sun TV Network Ltd (Sunrisers Eastern Cape) and Mega Sportz NPC relating to the SA 20 in January 2023; and the election of Mr Leon Coetzee as President of the EP Cricket Board.

Judge Ngoepe found that all governance aspects pertaining to the establishment of Mega Sportz NPC and the conclusion of the agreement defining its duties as between it and EPC had been followed.

He found that no official or director of EPC had benefitted financially by virtue of the agreement concluded with Mega Sportz NPC.

He also found that all agreements relating to the SA 20 were authorised by EPC and valid thereby addressing an unauthorised report circulated to clubs and the media alleging that such agreements were invalid.

The judge states in his report:
“What is peculiar about the Board of the EPC is that one consistently finds one and the same set of individuals together complaining against the rest, and, for that matter, on a number of issues,” he states in his summary of his findings.

“I have not come across any issue or instance in which the pattern was broken where for example one or two of the current complainants fell into the so-called other group or vice-versa.

“It is therefore a matter of grave concern that there exist two camps within the Board, something which, with all due respect, must be ended”.
Judge Ngoepe was critical of board members using the media to settle disputes. “There has been a tendency to take internal matters to the media; that is – to use the fashionable terminology – weaponize the media.

“In my view, the Board is the platform for robust debates if needs be – something which is common – as opposed to taking matters to the media.

“People should feel free to air their views in the Boardroom, without any fear of a leak to the media. It is accepted that sometimes things do leak out to the media, but a practice to do so deliberately would inhibit members from freely airing their views; it will have a chilling effect.

“Members of the Board should therefore desist from resorting to the media.

“In normal circumstances when the Board speaks to the media, it would do so in accordance with internal procedures, such as through a spokesperson, CEO, chair, or some agreed channel”.

The three dismissed board members have the right to approach a court to review the determination by the Board, in compliance with Section 71(5) of the Companies Act and Article 20.1.8 of the MOI.

History was made on Sunday, when the South African senior men’s team finished on the podium at the World Half Marathon Championships. Thabang Mosiako (6th), Stephen Mokoka (11th), Elroy Gelant (13th) and Precious Mashele (19th) claimed the bronze medal behind Kenya and Ethiopia at the inaugural World Road Running Championships in Latvia.

Mosiako’s exceptional performance secured the bronze medal yesterday and he is now only the third SA man to break 60 minutes as he set a new career best of 59:52, and an Eastern Province record, for sixth place in a race where the Kenyan trio of Sabastian Sawe (59:10), Daniel Ebenyo (59:14) and Samwel Mailu (59:19) swept the podium.

Ebenya won the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10KM in April this year, and Mosiako’s fantastic time was just one second short of team-mate, Stephen Makoko’s, SA record. Mosiako won his maiden national 21km title at the Nelson Mandela Bay Half Marathon this year, while breaking 28 minutes over 10km for the first time when he claimed third place at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K.

Thabang was thrilled and grateful with this team victory.

“I would like to thank my coach, Michael Mbambani, the Ikhamva group and Nedbank running club, for their support and Athletics South Africa for helping make this happen, we are proud of our results today,” said Mosiako.

Mosiako, 28, is based in Gqeberha training with Michael Mbambani who is over the moon with this team medal award.

“It feels like a dream, said Mike.

“I must thank the entire group, they have been fitting like hand and glove and this medal is the result of hard work, commitment, and perseverance.

“Thabang’s family are in the North-West but he is training in the Eastern Cape.

“We are showcasing that this is not a fluke, this is reality, and we are delivering results.

“Congratulations to Thabang and team South Africa for winning the Bronze medal,” added Mbambani.

Galant, who clocked a personal best 1:00:56 for 13th position, added his excitement with the team achievement.

“I am excited for the team. We said two months prior to this that we believed we could get a team medal. So the belief of knowing that we were capable of getting a team medal pushed me even when I fell off the pace. I told myself that I can’t let my country down because the last 5kms I was tired but I was thinking of that team medal,” said an elated Galant.

Straton Electrical advise you to first of all directly ask your electrician if he/she is a registered Electrical Single Phase Tester OR an Installation Electrician OR a Master Electrician. In addition your electrician should be able to provide their registration numbers for themselves and their business.

Definitions as per the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009:

1. Electrical Tester for Single Phase: A person who has been registered as an electrical tester for single phase in terms of regulation 11(2) for the verification and certification of the construction, testing and inspection of electrical installations supplied by a single phase electricity supply at the point of control, excluding specialised electrical installations.

2. Installation Electrician: A person who has been registered as an installation electrical tester for single phase in terms of regulation 11(2) for the verification and certification of the construction, testing and inspection of any electrical installation, excluding specialised electrical installations.

Installation work means:

a. the installation, extension, modification or repair of an electrical installation.
b. the connection of machinery at the supply terminals of such machinery; or
c. the inspection, testing and verification of electrical installations for the purpose of issuing a certificate of compliance.

3. Master Electrician: A master electrician is a person who has been registered as a master electrician in terms of regulation 11(2) for the verification and certification of the construction, testing and inspection of any electrical installation. i.e the highest electrician level.

All electrical firms need to be registered with the Department of Employment and Labour and the National Bargaining Council for the Electrical Industry.

Your chosen electrician should be able to show you three things:

1. Qualification as an electrical tester for single phase OR as an installation or master electrician
2. Current registration documents with the DoEL (Department of Employment and Labour)
3. Letter of good standing with the National Bargaining Council for the Electrical Industry which can also be obtained telephonically from any local NBCEI office here: https://nbcei.co.za/contact-us/

Visit and search the members of the Electrical Contractors Association of South Africa (ECA SA) – http://search.ecasa.co.za/ – and search there. The future of Public Relations (PR) in the Eastern Cape is getting brighter. The Department of Media and Communication will host an event on Friday, September 29 at the Nelson Mandela University’s Indoor Sport Centre, aimed to connect PR students with established industry professionals. Nelson Mandela University’s undergraduate PR students are practicing their best elevator pitches ahead of the university’s Annual Public Relations Student and Industry Matchmaking Event.

The event is especially geared for current second-year students in need of completing full-time internships during the third year of their PR Management Diploma. Students will engage with industry professionals in a “speed-networking” session, said Media and Communication Head of the Department, Dr Janelle Vermaak-Griessel.

“The event provides a unique opportunity for the aspiring PR professionals to gain valuable insight by networking with experts, enhancing their interview skills ahead of their upcoming job search and thus assists in launching their careers. By hosting this event, the Department of Media and Communication hopes to bridge the gap between academia and industry by encouraging collaboration and mentoring that will be mutually beneficial to professionals and students,” said Vermaak-Griessel.

Last year students got to network with representatives from Volkswagen Group South Africa, OM & Barker, MyPR.co.za, Exporters Eastern Cape, The South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) and more. “The event was very fruitful, and I enjoyed talking to the employers. It was a nice experience as I feel it prepared me for future interviews. The fact that I got an employer contacting me on the same day, was a really nice feeling and experience,” said Shadi Tshabangu, a 3rd year Public Relations Management Student, who attended last year’s event.

This year the University will host guest speakers, Lungisile Mtshutshwana (Isuzu Motors South Africa), Mfundo Shozi (Splendid Group) and Gert Klopper (Past President of The Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa – PRISA).

• Piwigo – Ctrl Refresh Images Don’t Load Problem Solved
• How Did We Get From’ “My Damn Pages Don’t Load” to “Look-  A Hyena With A Giraffe Leg”?

One of the most recommended open source Photo Imaging Content Management Systems is Piwigo.

On my Piwigo installation at Straton.org.za I kept experiencing a minor niggle which became a major niggle the more I hit Cmd R (Ctrl F5 for the peasants) to force the loading of images and thumbnails in my browser after uploading images to the Piwigo installation.

Anyway using Google to find a solution to “Piwigo: my images not loading” eventually led me to the solution which is all around SSL, Port 80 and Port 443. It would appear that this is a legacy issue from the days when one could choose to either use http or the more secure https protocol. A number of solutions were proposed in the Github forums.

The most elegant solution for me was proposed by user Pierrick Le Gall and involved the following steps:

1. Open your Piwigi Public_html folder on your server
2. Find the Include folder and open it
3. Open the functions_url.inc.php file
4. Find lines 64 to 72 and comment each one out (adding // before each line does so)
5. Save
6. Check

To re-iterate:

Find these lines in functions_url.inc.php:

The pride of doing simple tasks at home and not having to call and pay a professional – like Straton Electrical – to do it is something that is pretty fulfilling. When it comes to electrical work the scope of work that can be done by a DIY person is limited mostly to non life threatening tasks such as changing a plug top, lightbulb, geyser element and troubleshooting why certain parts of the home have no power.

Here are some short instructional guidelines on how to wire a plug, wire a light switch, change a light bulb, change a geyser element, troubleshoot electrical problems around the home and how to diagnose a continual Earth Leakage Unit tripping problem:

How to Wire a Plug:

• Gather the necessary tools: a screwdriver, wire cutters/strippers, and a new plug.
• Remove the cover of the plug by loosening the screws.
• Strip the insulation off the end of the wire, exposing about half an inch of copper.
• Loosen the screws on the plug terminals.
• Connect the coloured wire to the corresponding terminal (usually red to live, black to neutral, and green/yellow to earth).
• Tighten the screws securely to ensure a proper connection.
• Replace the cover and tighten the screws.
• Double-check all connections and test the plug before using it.

How to Wire a Light Switch:

• Before starting, switch off the power to the circuit at the main electrical panel.
• Remove the existing switch cover plate and unscrew the switch from the electrical box.
• Locate the wires connected to the switch: typically, a red (live) wire, a black (neutral) wire, and a ground wire.
• Disconnect the wires from the old switch, making sure to note their positions.
• Connect the corresponding wires to the new switch, using wire nuts or the appropriate connectors.
• Carefully tuck the wires back into the electrical box, ensuring they are not pinched or damaged.
• Securely screw the new switch into place and replace the cover plate.
• Turn on the power and test the switch to ensure it is working correctly.

How to Change a Light Bulb:

• Ensure the light switch is turned off before replacing the bulb.
• Allow the old bulb to cool down if it was recently in use.
• Gently twist the old bulb counterclockwise to remove it from the socket.
• Take the new bulb and align the base with the socket.
• Insert the bulb into the socket and twist it clockwise until it is snug.
• Avoid touching the glass part of the bulb with bare hands to prevent oil transfer, which can shorten its lifespan.
• Turn on the light switch to test the new bulb.

How to Change a Geyser Element:

• Switch off the power to the geyser at the main electrical panel.
• Turn off the tap supplying wtare to the Geyser.
• Open the hot water tap in your bathroom to drain the geyser.
• Locate the access panel on the geyser, usually found near the bottom.
• Remove the access panel using a screwdriver or the appropriate tool.
• Identify the heating element, which is a long tube-shaped component.
• Disconnect the wires from the element by unscrewing the terminals.
• Unscrew the old element using a wrench or the appropriate tool (newer elements use Allen Keys), turning it counterclockwise.
• Insert the new element and tighten it clockwise.
• Reconnect the wires to the new element, ensuring a secure connection.
• Replace the access panel and tighten the screws.
• Open the tap and fill the geyser with water.
• Turn on the power and test the geyser to verify proper functioning.

How to Troubleshoot Electrical Problems around the Home:

• If you encounter no electricity in your home, start by checking the load shedding schedules.
• Check that the main municipal Circuit Breaker supplying power to your home is is in the “on” position.
• Check that your meter is ‘consuming’ electricity.
• Check the circuit breakers in your distribution board to ensure all switches are in the “on” position or fuses are intact.
• If a specific area of your home has lost power, check if any circuit breakers have tripped and reset them if necessary.
• Inspect outlets or switches for loose connections or signs of damage. If found, switch off the power and consult a licensed electrician for repairs.
• If a light fixture is not working, check the bulb to ensure it’s not burnt out. If the bulb is fine, switch off the power and examine the wiring connections within the fixture.

For persistent electrical issues or if you are unsure about troubleshooting, it’s always best to consult a qualified electrician for assistance.

Diagnosing a continual Earth Leakage Tripping problem can be challenging, but here are some steps you can follow to identify and troubleshoot the issue:

Understand Earth Leakage Tripping:

• Earth Leakage Tripping occurs when an electrical circuit detects an imbalance between the current flowing into the circuit and the current returning through the neutral wire.
• This imbalance can be caused by a fault, such as a short circuit or a leakage of current to the earth.
• An Earth Leakage Unit (ELU) must function properly in order to protect you from being shocked and possible being killed.
• Test your ELU often – press the TEST button on the ELU to check that it does trip. If it doesn’t trip then call an electrician immediately to have it replaced.

“Testing your Earth Leakage Unit for proper functioning could save your life and the lives of your loved ones,” opined Straton Electrical.

Initial Precautions:

• Before starting any troubleshooting, ensure your safety by switching off the power to the affected circuit at the main electrical panel.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as insulated gloves and safety glasses when working with electrical components.

Identify the Circuit:

• Determine which specific circuit is causing the Earth Leakage Tripping. This can be done by switching off all individual circuit breakers and then switching them on one by one, observing which circuit triggers the tripping.

Check Appliances and Devices:

• Disconnect all devices and appliances connected to the circuit causing the tripping.
• Gradually reconnect each device one by one and observe if the Earth Leakage Tripping occurs when a specific device is connected.
• If the tripping only happens with a particular device, it may indicate a fault within that device. You may need to have it repaired or replaced.

Inspect Wiring and Outlets:

• Carefully examine the wiring and outlets associated with the circuit.
• Look for any signs of damage, loose connections, or exposed wires.
• Tighten any loose connections and repair or replace any damaged wiring or outlets.

Moisture and Water Intrusion:

• Moisture and water can cause Earth Leakage Tripping. Check for any signs of water ingress near electrical components, outlets, or wiring.
• In a household the appliances combining electricity and water are normally the first ones to cause a problem – fridegs, freezers, washing machines, kettles being the foremost.
• Ensure that all outdoor circuits, such as those for swimming pools or garden areas, are properly grounded and protected against moisture.

Consult a Professional Electrician:

• If you have followed the above steps and are still unable to identify the cause of the Earth Leakage Tripping, it is advisable to consult a professional electrician.
• A licensed electrician will have the expertise and specialized equipment to diagnose and resolve complex electrical issues safely.

Remember, electrical work can be dangerous, so if you are unsure or uncomfortable with any of these tasks, it’s always best to hire a professional electrician for help.

World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) is celebrated on 18 September each year.

The South African Department of Water and Sanitation, under the slogan; “Enhancing accountability and sustainability for every drop!” says that World Water Monitoring Day is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness of the importance of protecting water resources around the world by engaging with people to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies.

Straton Water Monitors say; “Along with monitoring and management of our water resources we would say that measurement of our water usage is the first step and of paramount importance as, simply, if you cannot measure you cannot manage or monitor!”

The addition of a simple IoT Water Monitor device from Straton Water Monitor will certainly assist you in the above with management at your fingertips via an Android App or online.

If you take these three facts into consideration: (1) Household leaks can waste more than 3.8 trillion liters annually nationwide. That’s equal to the annual household water use of more than 11 million homes. (2) Ten percent of homes have leaks that waste 340 liters or more per day and (3) A leaky tap that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 11 400 liters per year – then it will become clear that managing water properly can lead to massive savings – not only of water but also of money leaking back down the drain!

The Straton Water Monitor is the first step in takling back control. This IoT Device simply plugs into the ‘probe hole’ on most meters, is self powered and communicates to any IoT enabled ‘tower’ as it communicates your water usage to an Android App or online browser. Exceptions are reported and leaks can be diagnosed long before they become a major problem.

“Our first installation of the Straton Water Monitor was in a self owned rental premises currently being used as a private school. On the first weekend after installation we were alerted to high water usage from what should have been an unoccupied building. Immediate investigation revealed a leaking toilet cistern that, if left unattended to, would have led to the loss of tens of thousands of liters of water which we would have paid hundreds of rands to the local municipality for,” says Straton.

World Water Monitoring Day is officially celebrated on September 18 annually, but monitoring and educational events can take place any time between March 22 and December 31 annually. During this time, people of all ages throughout the world community have an opportunity to monitor the quality of their local watersheds and enter the results of their efforts into an international database. Water boards and stakeholders also use this period to educate and create awareness on natural water resource monitoring targeting professionals and managers in the sector, across different disciplines and end users.

The SA Government Department’s Surface and Groundwater directorate (SGWI) engages in a wide variety of data collection and analysis activities such as specialised springs, transboundary aquifer and Acid Mine Drainage monitoring, surface and groundwater quality and level monitoring including rainfall station, in support of the public’s needs and in support of decision making processes. This is in line with adhering to the South African National Water Act (NWA, 36 of 1998) to protect and ensure all natural water resources are used and managed sustainably, and the public has reliable, affordable, accessible and good quality water on daily basis for domestic and economic use.

Monitoring these water resources and ensuring environmental sustainability further contributes towards the progress of achieving SDG goal(s) namely Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6);

• Target 6.3: By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally
• Target 6.5: By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate
• Target 6.6: By 2020, protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes
• WWMD activities are aligned with ensuring progress towards Target 6.B: Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management

World Water Monitoring Day was established in 2003 by America’s Clean Water Foundation (ACWF) as a global educational outreach program. The program, subsequently named the “World Water Monitoring Challenge” and “EarthEcho Water Challenge,” aims to build public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by empowering citizens to carry out basic monitoring of their local water bodies. A simple test kit enables everyone, children and adults, to sample local water bodies for a set of water quality parameters including temperature, acidity (pH), clarity (turbidity) and dissolved oxygen (DO). Information on purchasing low-cost test kits is available from the current sponsoring organization, EarthEcho International, and the results of monitoring events are then shared with participating communities around the globe on the sponsor’s website.

In South Africa:

• School-aged girls spend several hours a day trekking to and from deep water boreholes (wells).
• Women often walk 10-15 kilometers per day to carry 15 liters on their heads for the long trek home.
• Typically, 15 liters of water typically lasts a family for only a day or two.

Here is why we need to conserve water:

• Earths water supply is limited – we only have the water that we have now
• 97 Percent of all the water on the earth is salt water and hence, it is not suitable for drinking
• Out of the three percent fresh water, only one percent is available for drinking
• The other two percent is sealed in glaciers
• Every one of us relies on that one percent water for survival, so it should be one of our responsibilities to preserve and conserve water
• Saving water helps in preserving our environment. It reduces the energy required to process and deliver water, which helps in reducing pollution and in conserving fuel resources
• Saving water will make water available in the future
• It helps in building a better defence against future drought years
• We use water for many other and important reasons like making electricity, cleaning, cooking, irrigating, etc
• We need to conserve water so that our trees and plants can have life
• It is also needed for the survival of some endangered species.
• The water amount stays the same: Because of its cyclical nature, the amount of water that has ever been present on earth has remained the same since the beginning of time.
• Water is a sign of life: If scientists wish to search for life in dark unexplored corners of the earth or space, they will look for water as all the species known to humankind are dependent on water in one way or another.
• Water is good for temperature regulation: Your body’s temperature as well as the earth’s temperature is regulated by water.
• Water defies gravity: Unlike many other liquids, water can defy gravity, and a prime example of this is how water travels up a plant’s roots and through its inner vessels.

Athletics SA, EP Athletics and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will be hosting the ASA Cross Country Championships this Saturday, 16 September, at the Nelson Mandela University Sport fields.

The best of South Africa’s Cross Country runners, ranging in age from 8 years to over 80 years, and covering distances from 2km to 10km, will be in action in a full day program between 07h30 and 18h00.

“Cross country is one of the toughest disciplines of running, said EPA President, Sticks Stiglingh.

“The beauty of it is that you can do it anywhere, on any terrain, and in any weather conditions, without any specialised equipment or shoes. “All you need is determination, strength, and a tough mind. “Cross country is the development arm of athletics in our province, and we welcome more than 40 athletes from rural areas in our EPA team of 247, as part of our vision to extend athletics into all corners of our province,” added Stiglingh.

With the support from 18 provinces, from as far as North, North-West South Africa, to Mpumalanga and the Vaal Triangle, 3900 athletes will be competing in their age categories for their personal best times and podium finishes.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has played a huge role in developing athletics in the Eastern Cape and South Africa via their sponsorship of EPA.
Executive Mayor, Gary van Niekerk, added his words of support.

“It is such a joy to host so many first-class national athletic events in our city. “We do not take this for granted and would love to build on the successes that we enjoyed thus far. “This is only possible with the continued support of Athletics South Africa, Eastern Province Athletics and the enthusiastic participation of athletes from all corners of our beautiful country. “In addition, our local talent development receives a major boost as young boys and girls see their role models compete on home soil. “You can count on our continued support for athletics and the wellbeing of our sportsmen and women,” said van Niekerk.

The highlight of the competitive programme will take place between 09.50 and 13.00 during the top races, which include Junior men and women, Senior men and women and 16- & 17-year-old men and women.

The national teams will be selected from these races and will compete in the World Cross Country Championships in early 2024.

ASA President, James Moloi, added his endorsement of the event.

“The ASA Cross Country Championships is a chance to showcase mass participation at its best as this event is where we best display the love the family has for Athletics in South Africa.

“The beauty of this event is in the enthusiasm of each athlete in each age group, this is a perfect Family Day in athletics.

“While the senior age groups offer us the seriousness in competition, the young provide the colour of the day, as they race each other mostly for the first time at this level,” said Moloi.

The event will be televised live by SuperSport and can be viewed on channel 216.

Spectators are invited to come and support this event and cheer on our EPA local runners. Access to the venue is R30.00 for adults. Tickets are available at the entrance, and card payments are preferred.

Today we had a look at our MyPR.co.za web site statistics for the month to date of August 2023. We have deployed our own hosted stats software and have been closely watching and comparing these stats – with Google Ananlytics and our global Server Statistics programmes – in order to check the veracity of the numbers.

GQEBERHA – Vodacom Eastern Cape is taking significant steps to address the escalating issue of vandalism and battery theft at base station sites in the region. On average, 120 sites on average per month experience vandalism, while approximately 62 lithium batteries are stolen each month, with Kei County being one of the worst areas affected.

“We have seen a rise in vandalism and battery theft in the Eastern Cape region by criminal syndicates, which disrupts network services and causes periods of downtime for our customers. The cost of this criminal activity goes beyond the equipment, time and resources to restore and repair infrastructure. It can have a serious ripple effect on communities that rely on connectivity as a lifeline,” says Zakhele Jiyane, Managing Executive for Vodacom Eastern Cape region.

Cellular base stations are often the only form of connectivity available to many communities, especially those in remote areas. When incidents of vandalism and theft occur at these sites, they can leave thousands of residents cut off from communications. This can have a severe impact on both small businesses and individuals, especially in emergencies when a call makes the difference between life and death. Restoring connectivity after these criminal incidents can cause further downtime and costs the region more than R5.35 million a year, which could be invested in network upgrades and rural expansion.

As Vodacom Eastern Cape has implemented additional backup power solutions to ensure connectivity during load-shedding, criminals are now targeting the generators, cables and backup batteries at base station sites. This increasing trend has also resulted in the vandalism of generator vaults and battery cabinets.

“Vodacom Eastern Cape has been working closely with a specialised security firm, which handles cases where arrests are made. However, the fundamental challenge we are faced with is in ensuring that the correct charges are brought against the perpetrators. Additionally, the granting of bail to criminals without valid addresses has been a hindrance to our efforts,” adds Jiyane.

To mitigate these challenges, Vodacom Eastern Cape has invested in robust security measures to protect base station sites and equipment. This includes deploying trained security personnel to safeguard sites actively and deter potential criminals. The company is also installing high-security battery cabinets and reinforcing and upgrading site containers to more hardened or vault-type containers to make it more difficult for criminals to access valuable equipment, such as generators. Where possible, copper cables are being replaced by aluminium, which is less attractive to thieves.

“While we have invested significantly in boosting our security measures at our base station sites, we acknowledge that the fight against vandalism and theft is ongoing with crime syndicates finding new ways to carry out their illegal operations. That is why we are appealing to all stakeholders, from law enforcement to communities, to play a part in curbing these offences. As part of these efforts, we are collaborating with residents, engaging with chiefs of different villages and encouraging community members to report criminal activity. Putting a stop to vandalism and theft is in the interest of everyone, ensuring uninterrupted access to the benefits of connectivity,” concludes Jiyane.

Melikhaya Frans successfully defended his title at the Nelson Mandela Bay Choose to Challenge 10km race with an excellent performance and a chase to the finish line in 28.44, closely followed, seven seconds later, by Nedbank Running Club’s, Thabang Mosiako, who finished second in 28.51.

The top five men all finished in under 31 minutes, with Cwenga Nose in third place, in 30.02, and Sinethemba Jilingisi in fourth place in 30.34. Nedbank running club’s Andile Motwana finished fifth in 30.37.

The race, organised by EPA, was held at Cillie’ High School’s JJ Engelbrecht Sports Grounds in North End in superb weather conditions on Saturday, 5 August.

Over 600 athletes participated in the NMB Choose to Challenge 10km and 5km races, themed to celebrate women during women’s month.

MMC Bassie Kamana, responsible for Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture showed his support for women at the event.

“We are happy to celebrate women today at this event which encourages a healthy mind and body – women give us life which we must celebrate, they are precious and must be treasured,” added Kamana.

Kelly van Vliet, of Nedbank running club, flew to the finish and first in her 35-39 age group, in 37.35, followed by Kayla Nell, of Charlo athletics club, in 38.44. Lindie Steyn, of Midack athletics club, finished third in 39.09, and Adri Wessels, of Run 4 Christ athletics club, finished fourth and first in her age category (40-49) in 40.00. Kaitlyn Wolff, of Achilles athletics club, took fifth position in 40.04. Khaya Gqwetha, of Vukani, won his 35-39 age category in 32.59, and Luyanda Tshangana, of Ikhamva, won the 40-49 age category in 31.32.

Desmond Zibi won the 50-59 age group category in an impressive 33.30, with Christine Claasen, of Nedbank running club winning the women’s 50-59 age category in 44.10.

In the 60-69 age category, Mzoli Mpalala, of Boxer athletics club, won first position in 41.30, with Margie Saunders, of Nedbank, the first women home in this age category in a superb time of 47.21.

“I really enjoyed my run, it was a lovely course in superb weather and it’s simply amazing to celebrate women! said Margie one of the event’s ambassadors this year.

Candice Richards, of 32Gi club, who was also an ambassador for the event, first finished her 10km and then returned to the route to motivate and bring home her fellow runners who all finished before the cut off.

”A few of the runners doubted they would finish in time but I kept them focussed and they all finished,” said Candice.

Hannes Els, of Madiba Bay Warriors, defended his title to finish first in the 70+ age category in 45.42, with Jos Els of Madiba Bay Warriors, finishing first in this age category in 59.01. Liz Jenkerson, of Muirite Strider, running in the 70-79 age category, finished her race in 1.02.22.

In the 5km race Simthandile Goliath was the first male home and Kylie Dorfling was the first female to finish.

Top local runner, Ntombesintu Mfunzi, who is expecting her first child in two weeks, and has continued running throughout her pregnancy, finished the 5km run in 28 minutes.

“My son is due in two weeks, and I am celebrating his birth in women’s month which is extra special.

“I would like to encourage all women to keep exercising as running is really the best therapy, it untangles the mind,” added Ntombi, who is passionate about motivating women through their personal challenges.

Margie Saunders, local running legend for 35 years, is inviting all women and their partners to celebrate Women’s Day with family and friends by entering the Choose to Challenge 10km on Saturday, 5 August.

Her motivation for running: “Running has and always will be my best stress reliever!” Margie started running in her mid-30’s and ran all her best times in her mid-40’s, including a personal best marathon time of 2.55 and two silver Comrades, finishing in 7.24 and 7.25!

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 and endured six months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy before she could get back to her prior fitness levels. She juggled work pressures but kept running and in her 60’s she broke a couple of SA records, for 15km, half marathon and marathon distances, including a few age group world bests for the 15km and 30km.

She has been struggling for the past 12 months recovering from an abdominal operation last year and a freak accident in January this year when she broke her ankle and foot.

Choose to Challenge will be Margie’s first race this year and probably her last before she turns 70 in September.

“I have really missed the Eastern Cape runners, particularly my fellow Nedbank running club members, and look forward to seeing everyone again, happy running all,” said Margie, who then hinted at her future goals.

“Soon with my 70 age category tag, I have some (hopefully not too lofty) goals! “ Margie Saunders epitomizes the inspirational strength which this event celebrates, consistently keeping her goals in challenging times, EP Athletics salutes this strong local athlete.

Last year hundreds of runners participated in the NMB Choose to Challenge 10km race, formerly known as the popular Diva run.

The Choose to Challenge race was renamed in 2021 in line with International Women’s Day theme and is open to all runners, serious athletes, fun runners, moms and their daughters as well as supportive men who wish to celebrate women with their participation in this event.

The race embraces these key messages: We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality; we can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements; collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world; from challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge!

Last year the Choose to Challenge 10km was won by Ikhamva Athletics Club top athlete, Melikhaya Frans, who had an excellent finish in 29.37, and Kelly van Vliet, running for Nedbank, who led the women home in 36.26.

This year, the popular Choose to Challenge 10km and 5km, which is presented by Eastern Province Athletics in partnership with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, will start from Cillie’ High School’s JJ Engelbrecht Sports Grounds, situated on the corner of Sydenham and Ambrose Street, North End.

The 10km will start at 07.00, and the 5km at 07.10. The Choose to Challenge 10km is an EPA Participation and Prestige League event and club gazebos are welcome.

The first 300 entries will receive Nike T-shirts and all finishers will receive medals at the prize giving and lucky draw, attendance only, which will be held at 08h45.

The cost for 10km run is R100, 10km runners aged 60 years and over, will only pay 50% of race fee, R50. The temporary license, required for the 10km only, is R40.

Race numbers can be collected, and late entries will be available, at Cillie’ High School’s JJ Engelbrecht Sports Grounds from 14.00 to 16.00 on Friday, 4 August.

Both race number collection and late entries will also be available between 06.00 and 07.00 on the morning of the race.
