NMB Legacy Project – Vision Forwards

The Legacy Project is a successful partnership between Eastern Province Athletics and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

The NMB Municipality started a partnership in 2011 with Ikhamva Athletics Club through the Motherwell Freedom Run.

In 2014 Mike Mbambani and his business partner, Alan Taylor, launched their dream road race, the Nelson Mandela Bay 21km, which was initiated after brainstorming about what they could do in the Bay to attract the National and International athletes. After the first year of the race, ASA former President, Mr Aleck Skhosana, engaged with these entrepreneurs to host the 21km ASA National Championships. After ASA added this National status to the NMB Half Marathon, the complexion of the race changed, and discussions started with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts & Culture, which culminated in the birth of the Nelson Mandela Bay Legacy Project.

The Legacy Project currently hosts 7 road running events annually reaching a number of areas in the metropole, and taking the sport of athletics to the people, namely, Motherwell, Gelvandale, Colchester, Uitenhage/Despatch and Summerstrand.

  1. NMB Kariega Human Race (5km, 10km, 21km)
  2. NMB Motherwell Freedom Run (11th year – 10km)
  3. NMB Half Marathon incorporating ASA Half Marathon Championships – the only World Athletics Elite Label Half Marathon in Africa
  4. NMB Choose to Challenge – Women’s month Celebration (10km, 5km)
  5. NMB Colchester Development Run (5km & 10km)
  6. NMB 1 City Marathon (42.2km, 21.1km)
  7. NMB Gelvandale Race (10km, 5km)

As Track & Field, together with Cross Country, is the base for any successful road runner and is the source of our regional development channel for young talented athletes, it was agreed in 2021 to expand the Legacy Project to include a Track & Field and Cross Country Series in order to reach an even broader audience of athletes from across the metro.

Both the Cross Country and Track & Field Series have enjoyed growing support each year from both schools and clubs. The ASA Cross Country Championships will be held at NMU in Gqeberha on Saturday, 16 September, and EPA are confident of achieving a number of medals from their talented and competitive local athletes.

The aim of the Legacy developmental project is to uplift our city’s sport administrators, clubs and athletes. Eastern Province Athletics is regarded around the country as having highly qualified coaches and technical officials who are able to mentor developing talent in the city. In particular, Mike Mbambani, esteemed local coach, Training Base and Club owner of Ikhamva Athletics Club, who recently received well deserved recognition when he was officially appointed by Athletics SA as the ASA Marathon Team Coach for the SA team competing in Hungary.

The Legacy Project events has in the past assisted in increasing the number of qualified coaches and officials from previously disadvantaged areas, as well as empowered and motivated teachers to encourage youth to participate in the sport of athletics, particularly as the requirements of this sport are minimal.

Looking at the recent results of the NMB EPA Cross Country Championships we note the growth in young talented athletes participating and winning their age groups. This was also evident in the NMB EPA Track & Field Championships. The upcoming Track & Field ASA Junior competition to be held in November will continue to strengthen the base of our young runners and our vision is to introduce a NMB EPA Track & Field Championship to provide them with an incentive to train towards national and platforms.

The professional standard of our local events enables our talented young athletes to compete at the highest level on home soil. A significant recent accomplishment was that EPA athletes finished on top of the National Medal Table at the 2023 NMB Half Marathon.

Our senior athletes, who developed through the Legacy Project events, are now competing on a national and international level. Melikhaya Frans will be competing in Budapest, Hungary, on 27 August 2023 at the World Athletics Senior Track and Field Championships (Marathon) and Thabang Mosiako at the World Half Marathon Champs in Latvia, on 1 October 2023.

EPA Track & Field athletes are also performing well. Mondray Barnard and his coach, Jessi Kahn, have just returned from participating in their first European Track & Field tour, where he earned three medals from five competitions. Local Track & Field coach, Gerrie Posthumus, coaches Luxolo Adams and Shirley Nekhubui, who are both also performing well on their European tour. TJ van der Walt and Nikithemba Hani were selected to represent SA at the World Student Games in China. Another local athlete, Jaco Smit, is in the SA Paralympic team and will participate in the World championships in Paris.

The NMB 1 City Marathon in December this year will be attracting top athletes who want to run this super-fast 42.2km route and achieve a faster qualifying time and their personal best times. Our goal is to grow the NMB 1 City Marathon event into one of the biggest in the country by 2027.

Next year our local flagship event, the NMB Half Marathon World Athletics Elite Label Road Race, will be celebrating it’s tenth edition, a huge milestone for this world-class event. The prize money will be a huge incentive for local, national and international runners with a R100 000 first prize and an increase of 10-15% in the total prize purse.

Enquiries, Mike Mbambani, 079 149 6796.

Could the Prestigious Lipton Cup Challenge come to Algoa Bay Once More?

We speculate this as we bring you Algoa Bay’s Connection to the 2023 Lipton Cup. NO pressure Alex and Mark!

The Lipton Challenge Cup is the only national inter-club sailing competition in South Africa.

In the long history of South Africa’s longest contionuous running sailing regatta – the Lipton Cup – only one team from Algoa Bay has ever won this prestigious regatta. That winner was Harold Kohler sailing a 30 Square Meter yacht under the banner of the Redhouse Yacht Club in Cape Town during 1957 on his yacht named Trickson II.

That win led to the only hosting of the Lipton Cup in Algoa Bay during 1958.

The 2023 running of the Lipton Cup does not have a local yacht taking part BUT the link to Algoa Bay is via the challenger for the Lipton Cup in a yacht named PhatAss skippered by Alex Schon and being sailed under the Seal Point Yacht Club burgee.

Alex and crew are sailing a Far East 28R which is marketed by local Gqeberha based outfit – Performance Yachting.

Mark Dawson from Performance Yachting said; “A win for the Fareast could reinvigorate sailors to look again at new and affordable boats. If we can get a class of Fareast 28R and/or Fareast 19R then close one design sailing could return to South African clubs and generate pathways to national and international competition.”

The Far East 28 is a sportboat with assymetric spinnaker and has been holding it’s own against the other challengers.

phatAss is owned by Deon Viljoen who purchased the Fareast 28R with a view to owning an affordable but competitive trailer sailer and has so far had the boat on the road for Mykonos, MSC and now at Lipton, all from his base at Deneysville Aquatic Club where he has been racing and rigging the boat with the assistance of Manten Marina. “With Alex Schon joining him on PhatAss, Deon has built a great team to challenge for the Lipton 2023,” concluded Dawson.

The Lipton Challenge Cup is being sailed out of Durban from 11 to 15 July with one race per day.

After 2 races the top three yachts are all tied on 5 points:

  1. PhatAss – FarEst 28R, Alex Schon (SPYC)
  2. Nitro – Cape 31, David Rae/Mike Hayton (RCYC)
  3. Kingsbourne Challenger – Pacer 27, Richard Weddell/Alec Lanh=gham-Love (SYC)

Should PhatAss continue and win the Lipton Cup then they will be the first Far East 28R to win this prestigious regatta and the second from a Gauteng based yacht club to win.

The PhatAss team consists of:

  • Skipper – Alex Schon
  • Team Manager – Wolf Seitz
  • Crew – Marko Seitz, Robert Edwards, Erwee Lourens, Deon Viljoen and Petro Spies.

The Lipton Cup has a rich history spanning several decades, bringing together sailors from all corners of Southern Africa to showcase their skills and passion for the sport. This event stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Sir Thomas Lipton, a true visionary who believed in the power of sailing to unite people and foster camaraderie.

What is Next for the Mobile Phone Industry?

The mobile phone industry has matured since the early 1990’s and managed the shift from Voice to Data products with no significant effect on profitability. The mobile phone industry has matured since the early 1990’s and managed the shift from Voice to Data products with no significant effect on profitability. Acknowledging that the industry is a fluid one with large amounts of cash and thousands of transactions on an hourly basis it would be safe to assume that most major networks are eyeing a transition into banking services.

With a stranglehold on technology and thousands of data points on clients over many years lending decisions could be said to be easier for a mobile phone company than a bank.

At a recent media roundtable in Gqeberha Vodacom executives were not averse to the proposition that they are perceived to be moving into the banking space with their many banking support products and could be learning lessons from M-Pesa which handles billions of transactions. M-Pesa is a mobile phone-based money transfer service, payments and micro-financing service, launched in 2007 by Vodafone and Safaricom. M-Pesa reached 26 billion transactions in the financial year ending 31 March 2023. As the Call Me inventor said; “If I could just have a few cents from each transaction…”

The Vodacom Eastern Cape region with it’s regional head office in Gqeberha, will invest over R500 million into the network and power backup upgrades across the province during the 2023/2024 financial year. This significant investment into the network will help the region expand connectivity in deep rural areas and townships that had no connectivity before. This will enable hundreds of thousands of people to participate in the digital economy for the first time. This coupled with a concerted effort to drive down the cost to communicate through innovative platforms such as Just4U and Just4YouTown has lowered voice and data rates across the province and enabled scores of people to be part of the digital economy underway.

The bulk of the capital expenditure will be used to deploy new base stations sites, improve network capacity, perform power backup upgrades due to power outages, and roll out 5G to accelerate digital inclusion. As a result, 106 new deep rural sites will be built in local municipalities such as Ngquza Hill, Ngqushwa, Matatiele, Mnquma, Mbashe, Ntabankulu Port St Johns, Buffallo City, Nelson Mandela Bay, to mention a few. LTE capacity expansions will be performed in 396 sites and 17 new urban sites will be deployed across the province. The Region switched on live 5G mobile network in three major municipal districts in the Eastern Cape in 2021 and plans to accelerate this deployment by rolling out over 50 new 5G sites.

Zakhele Jiyane, Managing Executive for Vodacom Eastern Cape region commented: “We have always maintained that our mobile networks are our key differentiator, and as a result, we continue to invest more money to expand networks to give our customers exceptional service. It is important for us to invest in the next generation of communication technology to give our customers access to networks that provide faster speeds and support the digital economy. Therefore, our accelerated investment in 5G in this financial year is in line with our commitment to connect the unconnected and will ultimately help the region bridge the digital divide between the urban and rural areas of the province.”

“It can no longer be acceptable for people in rural dwellers to watch the internet revolution from the sidelines, they need to be part of it and reap the associated economic benefits. Therefore, we will be rolling out over 100 new deep rural sites across the province to connect the unconnected. We mean serious business when we say that rural and township areas should have the same network experience such as the people who reside in urban areas are accustomed,” adds Jiyane.

Cost to communicate remains a big issue in emerging markets like South Africa. To drive prices down, the region adopted the use of personalised platforms, adopting a segment of one approach where they provide personalised offers based on customer needs and usage. For instance, our Just4U and Just4YouTown platforms have shown a great adoption figure, with such offers as J4U – 60 MIN VC + 150MB =1 DAY @ R5, 1 GB Facebook for 7 days @ R10, 100min VC @ R10 FOR 1 Day, Prepaid LTE – 2G @ R49, 10GB @ R99 and NXTLVL – 20G @ R49.

Jiyane added: “I am delighted of the strides we’ve made as a business to make data prices and smart devices more affordable, truly democratising the access to the internet and leading to a growth in the number of smart devices in our region. Data traffic grew by 40% across province due to attractive rates and network rollout. Our customer consideration scores, including NPS, have been on the rise, with customers scoring us better on measures such as value for money as they see the overall value we provide, from service to network to price.”

Working with the Department of Basic Education, the region’s enterprise business unit rolled out ICT platform in government schools to support access to quality education and donated R2m to help the provincial government deal with severe drought. As part of the transversal contract, the region helped to digitised over 2,000 health community workers, connected over 120 000 smart meters in several municipalities and supported close to 3000 government vehicles with IoT solutions that helped to keep costs down and improved efficiencies.

Critically, there is a growing expectation for big businesses to serve a social purpose, and to use their resources and core capabilities to make a meaningful contribution to poor communities. In this regard, the region continues to accelerate its investment in education through ICT centres in schools, Teacher Centres, Schools of Excellence, e-School platform, establishing Early Childhood Development centres to improve education in the early years and by rolling out Vodacom’s #CodeLikeAGirl programme aimed at developing coding skills among girls. Critically, Vodacom is providing the KwaNobuhle Lovelife Youth Centre which attracts more than 5000 youths, uncapped internet wireless connectivity to connect the youth at the centre for free.

Google Analytics 4 – Nightmare or Dream?

For Google it appears that their much hyped Google Analytics 4 release is becoming a bit of a nightmare release as marketers and anaylists compile lists of why Google Analytics 4 sucks. For Google it appears that their much hyped Google Analytics 4 release is becoming a bit of a nightmare release as marketers and anaylists compile lists of why Google Analytics 4 sucks. And herein could lie a few lessons for PR Professionals and their clients.

That Google is being panned for what is essentially a free product is perhaps a bit harsh but, if seen in the context of just how much money Google makes from paid for products, then one has a reasonable expectation of ease of use from the free products as well. I mean Google Search still works doesn’t it?

For me personally my first read of one of the listicle articles highlighting marketer frustration with the migration to Google Analytics 4 ‘inspired’ me to have a look at a self hosted analytics package called Matomo. Now Matomo is attractive to me for the simple reason that I can self-host it and deploy on any of our web sites. This will go a long way towards safeguarding our data intergrity and I have a bit of a suspicion that it will make the Google Bot a bit more eager to spider our web sites in the abscence of Google Analytics data to support their content scraping.

In addition we will look at offering this analytics alternative to our hosting clients over at Reach Trust.

I must confess that I am not a power user of Google Analytics but have dabbled every month to monitor just where traffic comes from and travels to on our web sites. Frankly I have found the server based analytics tools a bit better for a quick snapshot of traffic to and from our web sites.

But, after installing Matomo 24 hours ago, I think I may have found a new favourite.

Installation of Matomo was a breeze through my servers One Click installation panel.

Adding a web site property and installing the javascript analytics code on my three chosen web sites – MyPR, ReachTrust and Straton – was very easy.

The level of information now coming through from the Matomo analytics panel is clear, concise, easy to navigate and presented in a really appealing manner that complements what I sometimes think is my ‘convoluted logic’.

Also appealing to me with Matomo is that this is a service that I could offer to existing clients for a small fee.

The PR Lessons that Google need to learn from this ‘hiccup’:

  1. Identify your influencers (in the Real Estate trade these are called Gabby Annies!) and get feedback before launch: In Google’s case these would be the SEO marketers and Analysts.
  2. Own the narrative: If you feel that there could be negatives in your product then be the first person to talk about them and reveal the path to fixing.
  3. Swamp the market with happiness, success and praise from genuine users just before launch.
  4. Collaborate with your competitors – being nice to them will (hopefully) make them less inclined to pan you when you have a hiccup.
  5. Don’t be afraid to apologise, ask for clarification, fix and trumpet what you did.
  6. See the last paragraph for lesson number 6

Industry publication, Search Engine Land (SEL), surveyed readers about the new Google Analytics 4 property and received negative feedback as follows:

  • SEL reported that GA4’s user interface was hands-down the biggest issue reported by readers; “The UI was described as “slow”, “laughable” and a few other adjectives we’re opting not to publish.”
  • Another major concern for marketers has been the delay of same day data on GA4; “Advertisers have stressed that they need the ability to monitor performance constantly and are confused as to why the new analytics platform doesn’t appear to have this function.”
  • Marketers raised concerns about discrepancies on GA4 too; “Differences in information had resulted in some worrying that the data being served therefore couldn’t possibly be accurate, resulting in people questioning if they can trust GA4.”
  • Marketers across the board have been reporting that GA4 is incredibly difficult to use; “Even seasoned advertisers are finding it challenging trying to navigate their way around the new platform.”
  • Lack of resources; “With so many marketers struggling as they try to figure out GA4, many are questioning why Google hasn’t provided more educational resources explaining how the new tool works.”
  • Some advertisers explained that marketing doesn’t wear a one size fits all hat; “While some of the more complex settings may suit some, other professionals, such as bloggers, would just like access to basic tools on GA4 and are wasting time and money trying to understand features they don’t need to use.”
  • Another common complaint from marketers was the lack of features GA4 has to offer in comparison to Universal Analytics; “Marketers seemed particularly bothered by the removal of attribution features.”
  • Difficulty recreating reports; “Unfortunately, it seems for many that this task has proved far more difficult than it should have been.”
  • Reports; “According to many marketers who took part in our poll, Google has made many unnecessary changes when it comes to building reports, making their workload more difficult.”

Search Engine Land offers a course for those looking to upskill themselves on the new GA4 – https://searchengineland.com/ga4-training-courses-help-confused-marketers-428935

Some marketers summarised their experiences with GA4 in just a few words:

  • “Mad! Mad! Mad!
  • “Total cr*p!”
  • “GA4 = LAME!”
  • “One word (in fact two words): BS!”
  • “What a waste of our time.”
  • GA4 UI team should be fired.

Fault Finding: Your New Water Meter Keypad Pairs but Doesn’t accept Tokens or Water Availability Requests

The standard Amanzi Prepaid Water Meter that we see on many thousands of properties in South Africa has been around for a number of years. The standard Amanzi Prepaid Water Meter that we see on many thousands of properties in South Africa has been around for a number of years.

Black Prepaid Water Meter UIU (keypad) With Replaceable Batteries

The Water Meter unit is robust, can be buried in sand, can withstand being in water for long periods and be installed at any orientation and still work as desired. In addition the original white keypad (UIU) is also rated as water and sandproof. That does come with some ‘problems’ – chief of which is that the keypad does NOT have user replaceable batteries as it is a sealed unit.

The whte keypads have a battery life span of around 5 years – depending on the volume of use and then, at the end of life, are replaced.

Understandably these keypads then become a grudge purchase as landlords and tenants jostle over who should pay for the replacement.

BUT, help is at hand as Amanzi have released a Black Keypad with Replaceable batteries that is backward compatible with all versions of the prepaid water meter. Now, the tenants ‘pay for use’ only by replacing the UIU batteries when required.

Straton Prepaid ships these keypads all over South Africa and has gained insight and experience into trouble shooting where required.

A first for Straton Prepaid recently was a Cape Town Client who purchased two new sexy black keypads to replace the original white ones and successfully paired them, but the keypads failed to show the amount of water available or load more water with a new token.

The above problem is most likely a communication error and the way to troubleshoot this is as follows:

  • Reset the UIU using the #981# command – The UIU will display “default”
  • Then re-pair the UIU using the #999# Serial_Number### command.

After re-pairing the UIU will search for a meter using 2 different protocols.

(Explanation: It is important to take note on what protocol the UIU is on. 1 battery bar means Protocol 1 and 2 battery bars mean protocol 2. All sub-metering Rev 13 WMDs should be on protocol 1. When the WMD* is reset it starts searching for the WMD on Protocol 1 , if it cannot find the WMD the UIU will then switch to protocol 2 and continue searching. The problem is the UIU wont find the WMD (as only our Sigfox units are on protocol 2 ). The UIU will then remain on protocol 2 and not detect the WMD when you try to search again.)

SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees on track for “mal” weekend

Weather forecasters are predicting that the 20th annual Kirkwood Wildsfees will be experienced under clear Karoo skies for most of the weekend from Friday, June 30 to Sunday, July 2

Organisers have been battling wind and rain to build the tented mall which houses over 300 specialist stalls and to build the giant ECPTA stage.

“It has been touch and go, but we will be ready to welcome thousands of visitors from nine on Friday morning,” says festival director Jenni Honsbein.

For three days the Rietberg Mountains which frame the town of Kirkwood will echo to the lyrics, drums and guitar riffs of 25 of South Africa’s top musicians.

Headline acts include Wonderboom, Loufi and Hemels Fantasties on Friday, Biggy, Jan Blou Kaas, Loukman Adams and Band, and Snotkop on Saturday, and Majozi, Watershed and Fatman on Sunday.

The family festival offers plenty to do and experience for young and old.

For adrenalin junkies there is the Fun4U Play Park, with a giant Ferris wheel for the first time, as well as a bungee, Zorb and Paintball park.

Youngsters will be able to go on virtual game drives with SANParks, take part in colouring-in activities, and get up close and personal with reptiles during the Animals in Wonderland shows in the MTN Pavilion.

The pavilion is also home to a Boerboel show and the Eastern Cape’s koedoedrolverspoeg championships, with Wicus van der Merwe on the Saturday.

Family and friends will find plenty of places to “kuier” near the main stage, while taking their tastebuds on a wild safari through the food, wine, beer and gin stalls that surround the main seating area.

“Locals and visitors from around the country come to the Wildsfees to renew old friendships and to brush away the winter blues,” says Honsbein.

Other attractions include the biggest new vehicle, agricultural and camping expos in the province.

Your Prepaid Meter Will Have to be ‘Upgraded’ Soon

How to upgrade your prepaid meter What is TID and why is it relevant to your meter If you fail to upgrade by November 2024 your prepaid meter will stop accepting new tokens The TID process that all prepaid meters go through needs to be updated on each individual meter by November 2024. The TID …

  • How to upgrade your prepaid meter
  • What is TID and why is it relevant to your meter
  • If you fail to upgrade by November 2024 your prepaid meter will stop accepting new tokens

The TID process that all prepaid meters go through needs to be updated on each individual meter by November 2024.

The TID Rollover project is being driven by the Standard Transfer Specification Association of South Africa (STS).

Hexing 115KP Single Phase Prepaid Electricity Meter. Photo: Straton Prepaid

A TID is a unique token identifier coded into any token that you purchase from any vendor point or outlet when topping up your meter. The current identifier is calculated as the number of minutes that have elapsed since the base date of 1991. Consequently the incrementing of the 24 bit field contaning this value will eventually roll over to zero with the expected date of this occurence being November 2024 – similar problem to Y2K. New meters will now have a base date of 2014.

The TID process applies to all prepaid meters in South Africa.

The TIS process will be applied via a Key Change Tken (KCT) which is generated on the vending system and that token number will have to be enetered into each prepaid meter.

Straton Prepaid is currently conducting the TID Rollover process for all our pre-payment meters. Our competent teams will either visit the meter to enter the token; or the token will be sent to the consumer via the next purchase. This will be done in phases and we are working through the meters and sites.

In the case of the token being sent on the next vend, below is the process of entering the token. If your vend token does not accept please contact Straton Prepaid for assistance

The next vend token will show 3 sets of 20-digit tokens. Token 1 and 2 is the Key Change Token and the 3rd token is the vend token.

  1. Enter any unused tokens prior to doing the key change.
  2. Enter the 2 sets tokens in sequence and make sure they have been accepted.
  3. Lastly enter the vend token and if accepted the key change process was successful.

The process is a real threat and all prepaid meters (water, electricity and gas) will have to receive a new KCT by November 2024.

You will not lose any pre-purchased units on your meter and your meter will not have to be replaced.

Good rains and the return of tourists visiting game farms and lodges are expected to mark the return of buyers and record prices to the annual Kirkwood Wildsfees auction.

There is great excitement in the game industry following the return of SANParks to the annual Kirkwood Wildsfees auction after an absence around the Covid-19 shutdowns.

Over 150 lots of prize game animals including disease-free buffalo bulls will be on auction at the annual Kirkwood Wildsfees auction on Friday, June 30.

This will include around 360 purebred stock from the Addo Elephant National Park and other parks managed by SANParks.

“The return of SANParks game to the auction is welcomed by the tourism and game industries. Their animals are always sought after,” says Johan Swart, one of the conveners of the auction.

“Addo kudu bulls are always in demand because of their quality,” he adds

According to Garth Saville, convener of the auction, buyers from around the country have registered.

“The 15 buffalo bulls and SANParks plains game bulls that will be on sale are attracting buyers,” he says.

Among the bulls being offered by SANParks are eland, kudu, zebra, Cape Mountain Zebra, gemsbok, black wildebeest and hartebeest.

There are also two lots of spotted hyena.

The auctioneer is world renowned Brandon Leer.

The auction will be held at the Mayogi bomas on the R75 from 12:00 on Friday, June 30.

It coincides with the annual SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees, which is being held from Friday, June 30 to Sunday, July 2.

The festival offers three days of entertainment for the whole family.

Reasons we Prefer a Removal Company in Cape Town to our Uncle With a Bakkie

One of the Top 10 most stressful events in any person’s life is buying a new home and then having to move into it.

Packing up many years of precious goods and safely transporting those to your new Cape Town home can be a huge source of concern – especially if you ask the ‘Uncle’ next door if you can use his bakkie to transport your household goods around Cape Town.

Just driving the streets in an open bakkie is fraught with concern from goods being exposed to the elements to petty opportunistic thieves doing some unauthorised ‘shopping’ to major concerns about insurance and breakages.

Face it – replacing Grandma’s Feather Bed could be more expensive than paying a professional Removal Company in Cape Town to do the move for you.

16 More Reasons to Employ a Moving Professional:

  1. Time – Your time is expensive, rather use that on other income producing activities than packing. The average time it takes a professional to pack a three bedroomed home is around 10 hours.
  2. Expert Packers – Moving company staff develop an ‘eye’ and a system for packing that is logical and practical. AND, your household items will be easy to find later.
  3. Reliability – Professional Moving Companies in South Africa have access to more staff and vehicles than you or your Uncle next door. If your Uncle’s bakkie breaks down you will have more expense on your hands.
  4. Lowered Stress Levels – Rather opt to manage a removal company in Cape Town doing your move than to actually do it yourself: Far less stress.
  5. Top up your Medical Aid/Insurance – Should you do the move yourself you run the risk of injury and pain carrying, bending, walking, lifting and placing all your household goods in your new home.
  6. Insurance – Does your personal insurance extend to your goods in transit? Does it cover your Uncle’s bakkie? What if you have an accident carrying goods?
  7. Packing Materials – Doing your own move means you will need to beg, borrow, steal or purchase boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape and more. This means more time wasted and higher costs for yourself.
  8. Delicate Items – Professional Moving Companies have select staff able to wrap and pack your most delicate items from crystal sculptures to crystal chandeliers to valuable artwork and more. One slip with any of those items and you will lose more money than what your move costs.
  9. Young Children – Of course your precious children could get in the way of your packing or get injured in their enthusiasm to assist. Your children are worth more than the ‘savings’ you may make using Uncle’s Bakkie.
  10. Storage – Moving from your existing home before the date you can move into your new home would demand storage space. Valuable space that most moving companies in South Africa do have on offer.
  11. Larger home – If your home is larger than 2 bedrooms then a professional moving company is best.
  12. Access – If your old or new home has difficult access via stairways, narrow passages, restricted outside parking then give the headache to a moving company in Cape Town rather.
  13. Heavy Furniture – Unless your Uncle with a Bakkie is Arnold or an Uncle who spends way too much time in the Gym then rather use a Cape Town Removals Company to do your move for you.
  14. Time – This is a no-brainer, if you have limited time then rather use a moving company.
  15. City to City – There is no way that you will be able to accomplish a house move from Johannesburg to Cape Town or even Durban to Pietermaritzburg just with Uncle’s Bakkie so finding a moving company to do the work for you then is a must.
  16. Quotes – Do get quotes from removal companies that are recommended by friends and acquaintances. Most reputable moving companies are very happy to give an initial online quote.

Get quotes and find out more with these recommended Moving Companies in South Africa:

Entries are open for the annual Algoa Cares Charity Golf Day in East London, which is one of the highlights on the local social golf calendar.

“Sponsors have been quick to tee up, with Meyers Motors ISUZU leading the field as the Platinum Sponsor of the event,” says Algoa FM marketing manager Lesley Geyer.

The 2023 beneficiary is Hope Schools.

Funds raised will go towards the purchase of an industrial floor polisher, four computers, a brush cutter, and a chain saw.

“Being a beneficiary of this event will be an enormous blessing to more than 300 children from disadvantaged communities from around East London,” says Nigel Raw, the headmaster of Hope Schools.

“Being sustainable is one of our bigger and more challenging goals.

“We have an amazing 1 000 seat multi-purpose sports hall (with a climbing wall).

“Our goal is to rent this facility out,” says Raw.

The computers are needed to complete the computer room.

“Algoa FM understands that quality education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty, which is why it is one of our corporate social responsibility pillars,” says Geyer.

According to Connor Thorp, Meyers Motors ISUZU sales manager, the Meyers Motors Group is supporting the charity golf day as part of its commitment to improving education in the province.

“Meyers Motors continuously looks for opportunities to help drive education within our community.

“We know that education leads to transformation, so we assist where we can to ensure that our youth have the best opportunities to strive for greatness,” he says.

A carnival atmosphere awaits at the East London Golf Club on Friday, August 18, when the fun side of golf is celebrated at the annual Algoa Cares East London Charity Golf Day, promises Geyer.

“The Algoa FM Charity Golf Day is a highlight for many golfers on the East London calendar,” says Thorp.

“We have no doubt that this year will be just as successful, and of course we will make sure our ISUZU Bakkies and Seven Seater MUX’s are out on display for everyone to explore,” he adds.

To enter and to find out more about how you can support Hope Schools, visit Algoa FM’s website: www.algoafm.co.za

Advertisers wanting to connect with viable customers in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route are choosing Algoa FM as their preferred media choice in the broadcast footprint.

This is evident from the annual results to March 2023, as published by holding company AME Ltd on June 2.

“Algoa FM produced excellent results for the year ended 31 March 2023,” said AME Ltd. Group CEO Dave Tiltmann, in a statement on the results.

“Collectively, national and direct sales contributed to Net Radio Revenue ending 12% above budget, which together with tight financial controls, resulted in EBITDA last experienced pre-Covid.

“This performance was achieved despite a magnitude of conditions such as the severe water crisis, failing municipal infrastructure, disruptive power outages, and rising inflation, which was further exacerbated by the State of Disaster, which was only lifted during April of 2022.

“During the period under review, audiences have grown, online engagement is on an upward trajectory, and cash flow remains positive,” he wrote.

Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay, says: “The Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa (BRC), reports that our audience grew by close-on 10% in the year under review, from 397 000 to 436 000 past seven-day listeners.

“BRC data also reveals that Algoa FM is in a class of its own in the country, enjoying the highest percentage of loyal listeners compared with the five other regional, commercial radio stations which target listeners living an adult contemporary lifestyle.”

Correspondingly, Algoa FM is helping advertisers reach their target market across multiple platforms.

“We have evolved into much more than a radio station as we now connect with loyal followers on air, online, via DStv’s Channel 837, and on the ground.

“Google analytics reports that algoafm.co.za averages a million unique users while our stream @algoafm.co.za is attracting 1,6 million listening hours per quarter. We’ve also yielded encouraging growth in the Podcast space with Journey to Justice having garnered more than 71 thousand listens since launch.

“Algoa FM is also the most visible and interactive media house in the Eastern Cape, through activations with clients almost every weekend and often during the week,” says Jay.

The trend is growing as different advertisers continue to experience a positive return on investment across the station’s various platforms.

“Encouraging for us, are the type of bookings coming from our national advertisers via United Stations, our sales house in the national market. These clients clearly value the market we have crafted in our broadcast footprint, which extends from the Garden Route to the Wild Coast and inland through the Karoo.

“Much of the success our advertisers are experiencing is due to us not selling advertising, but rather, developing affordable marketing solutions which achieve goals. My team understands the market intimately and aside from offering creative packages that really work, they’re highly skilled at crafting multi-media campaigns that deliver bang for buck,” says Jay.

Dimbaza set to be Eastern Cape innovation hub

A partnership between the Non Automotive Manufacturing Cluster (NAM) and local and national government organisations is transforming the Dimbaza Industrial Park into the first Eastern Cape Innovation Zone. A partnership between the Non Automotive Manufacturing Cluster (NAM) and local and national government organisations is transforming the Dimbaza Industrial Park into the first Eastern Cape Innovation Zone.

Government partners include the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic), the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) and the Regional Innovation and Support (RISP) Programme of the Department of Science and Innovation, according to NAM chairperson Tamsanqa Gxowa.

Speaking at the official launch of “Innovate Dimbaza,” he said the revival of the industrial sector in the Eastern Cape would be led by the non-automotive manufacturing sector.

“From a government perspective, it makes sense to focus on the non automotive sector, because that is where the majority of the players are,” he said.

He pointed out that Dimbaza, in its “heyday,” contributed more to the regional gross domestic product than Uitenhage (now Kariega), the home of Volkswagen South Africa.

“There were more than 200 companies in Dimbaza. At NAM we believe that we can revive the industrial park by putting our talents and resources together to create jobs and alleviate poverty in the area”.

Innovate Dimbaza is an initiative to help Eastern Cape companies to become globally competitive through digitisation and rapid prototyping.

“Innovation is not only linked to coming up with new products, but looking in a narrative way to see what technologies we can improve,” he added.

A rapid prototyping facility consisting of state of the latest CNC machines, laser cutters, welders and 3D printers is already in place.

It will be supported by a digital hub.

A number of NAM members are either in Dimbaza already, or have committed to investing in the industrial park.

“We invite entrepreneurs from the Eastern Cape to come to Dimbaza for design and prototyping,” said Gxowa.

RISP representative Nare Mashamaite said the focus of the programme was on supporting innovation in underserved areas in townships and rural areas.

“Innovation is more important now than ever. We are all witness to the intensity of technological changes happening in the world. Radical innovations are disrupting industries.

“We cannot allow South Africa or Dimbaza to be left behind.

“That is why we have joined hands with the NAM cluster to form Innovation Dimbaza”.

Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe, deputy minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, said it was vital for municipalities to create the environment in which businesses could grow.

“Therefore, innovations of this nature are very critical and very important”.

Initiatives like Innovate Dimbaza represented a turnaround strategy for local economies.

“What we are doing here ensures that we have the kinds of businesses that have the ability to create other opportunities for small enterprises to grow.

“We must ensure that what we produce here is of global quality

“We must think big as the Eastern Cape.”

The revitalisation of the Bulembu airport would give investors in Dimbaza access to international markets, he added.

The friendly city of Gqeberha is fast becoming known as the city of records and that much was evident at the 2023 Nelson Mandela Bay Half Marathon which incorporated the Athletics South Africa Half Marathon Championships.

Starting in perfect conditions outside Pollock Beach on Marine Drive, 1500 runners set out over the looped course which also took runners past the Humewood Golf Club and Nelson Mandela University and was perfect for fast times.

Up front in the men’s race, Mandela Bay local athlete Thabang Mosiako ran the race of his life to perfectly time a sprint finish to emerge victorious in a world class time of 1:00:28 to obliterate his lifetime best as well as set a new Eastern Province record. “I am so excited and happy but before anything I must say thank you to Eastern Province Athletics, Nelson Mandela Bay, my coach Michael Mbambani, my training partners and my sponsor Nedbank because without them none of this would have happened,” said an elated Mosiako who also picked up the R80 000 first place prize.

“I fought for the province, and I fought for the city to keep the title here, so I am happy with the victory and of course the new record.” Mosiako’s time was also a new course record bettering Stephen Mokoka’s 2019 course record of 1:00:56.

Behind him, Lesotho’s Tebello Ramakongoana stormed through seconds later in a new Lesotho national record of 1:00:34 with South Africa’s Precious Mashele, a former winner of the event in 2021, finishing third in 1:00:42.

In the women’s race, South Africa’s Glenrose Xaba led a pack of 4 and pushed the pace from the word go with only Kenya’s Betty Chepkemoi and the Ethiopian duo of Salem Gebre and Bekelech Wariyo able to keep pace. Such was her pace that Xaba recorded lifetime bests through 10km and 15km.

It came down to a two women sprint as nearing Pollock Beach it was Xaba against Chepkemoi. In the final kilometer, Chepkemoi who on paper was the fastest women in the field by some 3 minutes got the advantage and kicked to cross the line victorious in 1:08:33 with Xaba smashing her lifetime best in 2 nd with a 1:08:36 to also retain her ASA National title. Wariyo hung on for 3 rd in 1:09:03. Back in 6 th , Lesotho’s Blandina Makatisi set a new Lesotho national record with a time of 1:09:44.

“I am happy with my victory today because I was out some time with injury so winning today shows that I am coming back,” said Chepkemoi. South Africa’s Xaba was elated with defending her national title. “I am very happy and still a bit in shock with how I ran today,” said Xaba. “I think Gqeberha is definitely my second home because I always run well when I am here.”

Race director Michael Mbambani was happy with how the event unfolded. “We are always blessed with good weather for our event and today was no exception,” said Mbambani. “Hats off to my LOC who work so hard behind the scenes and thank you to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for the support and Athletics South Africa. Next year is our 10 th edition of the event and we will be going bigger than ever before!”

Top Nelson Mandela Bay road runner Melikhaya Frans and elite SA long-distance runner Glenrose Xaba will turn out in defence of their national 21.1km titles in Gqeberha tomorrow.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Half Marathon is back in full force with nearly 1500 athletes expected to line up at 07.00 tomorrow at Pollok Beach, Summerstrand.

The race, organized by Eastern Province Athletics, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, holds World Athletics Elite Label road race status, and will incorporate the ASA Half Marathon National Championships. The scene is set for another spectacular finish with top local, national and international athletes competing on South African soil.

Last year saw a nail-biting finish when Lesotho’s Namakoe Nkhasi won in his personal best time of 1:00:01, narrowly beating local favourite Melikhaya Frans by two seconds. Frans smashed his lifetime best by over a minute as he set a new EP record and at the same time won his first national title in 1:01:03. Nkhasi and Frans will be on the starting line again and will expect hot competition from Kenya’s Kipkemoi Kiprono and Ethiopia’s Dinkalem Ayele, who are looking to improve on their personal best times.

Frans, who holds the national 30km record, faces SA half marathon record holder Stephen Mokoka (Athletics Gauteng North), national 10km record holder Precious Mashele (Central Gauteng Athletics) and SA 5000m record holder Elroy Gelant (Athletics Central North West).

Top local runner, Thabang Mosiako hopes to improve on his 61.59 personal best on this fast 21km route, feeling strong after his recent 27.52 personal best 10km in Gqeberha.

Desmond Zibi, of Ikhamva athletics club, will have the EP 55-59 age group record of 1.12.30 in his sights, which he narrowly missed last year.

On the woman’s international front, last year the race was dominated by Ethiopia’s Ftaw Zeray who led from gun to tape to claim the victory in 1:06:57, but will not be competing this year. Confirmed competitors are Genet Habela Abdurkadir, of Ethiopia, who is looking forward to improving her personal best time of 1.12.57 when she last competed in the 2018 edition of the Half Marathon, recent winner of the Two Oceans Half Marathon, Emma Pallant, who is looking to make a memorable debut in this distance and Ethiopia’s Chaltu Bedo, who boasts a personal best half marathon time of 1.11.50.

Glenrose Xaba will be aiming to secure her third straight ASA half-marathon title after setting a 10km personal best of 32.12 in Gqeberha last week, but the AGN star will have to beat a quality line-up to retain her national crown. The women’s national field features Kesa Molotsane (Athletics Free State), in-form CGA athletes Cacisile Sosibo and Cian Oldknow, and national marathon champion Annie Bothma (WP Athletics).

The Nelson Mandela Bay Half Marathon has built a reputation as one of the fastest 21km courses on the African continent.

Last year four national records fell as Lesotho’s Namakoe Nkhasi (1:01:01) and Neheng Khathala (1:09:57) bettered the Mountain Kingdom’s men’s and women’s records respectively, while Daniel Paulus (1:01:10) and Helalia Johannes (1:07:49) did the same for Namibia.

Race director, Mike Mbambani, confirmed that his team is ready to deliver the 9th edition of this successful race which has grown significantly since its launch in 2014.

“This is the biggest half marathon in the country and it’s the richest in the country in terms of prize money.

“At stake is not only the SA title but also valuable World Athletics Ranking points and R80,000 for first place. “The total prize pot is R553,000, with the added bonus of R152,100 in ASA Championship prize money, which includes R15 000 for the first South African male and female to finish the ASA Half Marathon Championships.

“We anticipate more than 15 elite international and foreign athletes in the race from different countries like Lesotho, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Ethiopia and Britain, as well as many top local and national athletes competing on South African soil.” added Mbambani.

MMC of Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture, Bassie Kamana, of NMBM, the race’s title sponsor, has endorsed this event which has been ranked by World Athletics as an Elite Label Road Race for the third consecutive year.

“Boosting sports tourism is high on the city’s agenda and partnering with high profile events like the NMB Half Marathon, which will be broadcast live on SuperSport, promotes international participation and exposure, which is well suited to our tourism goals. “We at NMBM pride ourselves on becoming the destination of choice for hosting both national and international events, and this marathon is the realization of that objective,” said Kamana.

The 21.1km route is fast and flat and runs on the coastal road. Runners will start from 07.00 and complete a circular route. Starting from Marine Drive, at Pollock Beach, they will head north to Driftsands junction, then south on Marine drive through NMU, down Admiralty road with the second lap turning at Driftsands junction to return to finish at Pollock Beach. A full rolling closure from 05h00 will ensure a safe run and minimum inconvenience to the public.

The race will be broadcast live via SuperSport Variety 4. Spectators are encouraged to support the race and athletes can follow results on FinishTime.
