Mount Marlow Lodge is a stately homestead built in 1852, located on Mount Marlow Farm, just 60 km from Somerset East. The farm is situated in typical Karoo mountain veld in which sheep, goats and wildlife flourish. The roomy house boasts yellowwood floors and ceilings, and has a large balcony overlooking the large lawn.

Mount Marlow Lodge offers spacious and comfortable self-catering accommodation in the historic farmhouse. Accommodation comprises two spacious en-suite rooms, as well as three large, comfortable rooms that share a bathroom.

We offer bass fishing on the farm in the summer and other activities include horse riding, hiking, birding, boating, swimming, game drives, tennis, and mountain biking. Game viewing can also be done on the farm and species such as kudu, wildebeest, impala, and springbok can be seen. It is also a birder’s paradise with 150 species of bird on the farm including black eagle, martial eagle, gymnogene, goshawk, secretary bird, and blue crane.

A fully stocked fly fishing shop on the premises promises glimpses of monster fish, and specially tied “guide’s choice” flies to make your dreams a reality. And once you’ve caught the monster, you can celebrate the day at Nigel’s Pub, sampling our extensive collection of malt whiskey’s.

Hilltop House: If you seek clean, comfortable and air-conditioned accommodation in Somerset East for your visit or overnight stay, Hilltop House provides exactly what you are looking for. Situated on the hill in the modern part of the town, Hilltop House is within walking distance of the main street, Gill College and Victoria Park with all its sports facilities. If you are in Somerset East for business or to visit someone in hospital, then Hilltop House is also very conveniently located.

In a private wing of the main house are three bedrooms. One has its own direct access from the pool area with a double bed and an en-suite shower bathroom. The other two rooms both have twin beds and en-suite bathrooms, one being a full bathroom and one a shower bathroom. These two rooms share an entrance and are ideal for families.

In an outside cottage there are two double en-suite bedrooms, each with its own entrance. All rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with DStv and Internet access, and ample secure off-street parking is also provided. Rooms are on a bed and breakfast basis, with dinner available by prior request at an additional charge.

Features include a pool for guests’ enjoyment and a large covered lapa with a built-in braai, dining table and seating. Opening off the lapa is a spacious guest lounge with a welcoming fireplace for winter nights.

Somerset House was built as a school in the Colonial style in 1905 in Paulet Street, which was the first street to be built in Somerset East in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Situated in the quietest part of a peaceful town and backing on to the Bosberg, the ambience of Somerset House is tranquil, scenic and restful.

Accommodation is offered in four spacious and airy en-suite bedrooms, each with underfloor heating, air-conditioning, percale linen, and all the extras one would expect to find. The living and dining room is large, comfortable and in excellent taste. Outside is a large, furnished veranda which looks out over the garden to the slopes of Bosberg.

Somerset House provides a full breakfast, and the town itself offers several places to eat. For a gourmet experience, simply walk a few doors along Paulet Street to Rosehope where you will be welcomed by one of South Africa’s premier chefs, Janet Telian. Chef Janet Telian also serves supper from the Somerset House and is well-known as a regular contributor of articles to the Lifestyle supplement of the Sunday Times.

Avondrust Guesthouse – Somerset East: Housed in a delightful Victorian-style building on the corner of Rawson and Louis Trichardt Streets, Avondrust Guesthouse presents itself as an upmarket 3 Star guest house. Just one block away from Main Street, it is within walking distance of all shops, schools and restaurants.

We offer seven rooms with en-suite bathrooms. All of the rooms have tea and coffee-making facilities, fridges, electric blankets and fans. Three of the rooms are air-conditioned. We also have a self-catering Garden Flat which sleeps four guests. Four of the rooms open onto a large wooden deck which overlooks the mountain. We have secure parking, DStv and a laundry service. Breakfast is served in a refurbished stable exhibiting a rustic atmosphere that is beautifully decorated. A large wooden deck at the back of the house has a magnificent view of the mountain. We have off-street parking, a braai facility, and lunch boxes and dinner can be arranged.

The forested, mountainous backdrop creates a dramatic setting for the town which is within sight of no less than 16 waterfalls. This is where you will find the thickly wooded Boschberg Nature Reserve, with its popular hiking trails including a 15 km circular route to an overnight hut at the summit of the mountain. Somerset East is an excellent birdwatching destination. Other adventures include trout fishing on five local dams, as well as rainbow and brown trout fishing in the Glen Avon Waterfall pools. The 9-hole golf course is said to be one of the most beautiful in the country.

Annual events include the Castle Lager Biltong Festival which is held every year around July, the Caltex Bruintjieshoogte Cycle Tour and marathon run between Pearston and Somerset East every year during March, and the Spring Rose and Flower Show is known to produce some of the finest roses in the country.

Palm Court Bed & Breakfast was originally a large family home until it was converted into a B&B in 2009. It is in a very quiet area of Somerset East and close to all shops, restaurants and other facilities. It boasts a very good view of the Boschberg Mountain.

The B&B has four bedrooms and two self-catering flats. There is a lounge, a dining room, a TV room and two separate braai areas which have access to a large swimming pool. There is a nursery, a tea garden, a gift shop and a playground adjacent to the house which can be accessed from the pool area behind the house.

Late sleepers and self-catering guests will find the tea garden useful as light meals are available from 10 am until 4 pm. Bed and breakfast guests have the option of having breakfast at the tea garden if they wish.

Karoo Werf Gastehuis Sis situated in the historical town of Cradock, a serene but typical Karoo farming town lying on the banks of the Great Fish River. The guest house offers three fully equipped flats, two double bedrooms sharing a kitchen and a separate self-catering garden cottage.

The original part of town is graced with some of the finest buildings. The Dutch Reformed Church is a national monument, designed to look like London’s St Martin’s-in-the-field, and there is the Olive Shreiner House Museum which is devoted to the authoress’s life and works.

The town’s streets are lined with Ilex Oak Trees, particularly on Dundas Street, where they have been declared a national monument. The Old Water Mill is completely restored and worth a visit. The Great Fish River Museum, housed in the converted second Dutch Reformed Church, conveys what it was like to live as a settler after 1806 during the second British occupation of the Cape.

Pophuis is a fully equipped house situated in Cradock, ideal for a large family or a group of friends. Cradock is a historical town lying on the banks of the Great Fish River, a serene but typical Karoo farming town.

The house consists of four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a dining room, a lounge area with a sun patio and braai facilities. There are safe lock-up facilities for vehicles.

The original part of town is graced with some of the finest buildings. The Dutch Reformed Church is a national monument, designed to look like London’s St Martin’s-in-the-field. There is also the Olive Shreiner House Museum which is devoted to the authoress’s life and works.

Cradock is probably best known for its natural sulphur spring, now the source of the town’s modern spa that draws people from all over the country to experience both its open-air and indoor heated pools.

We have one Luxury Suite with a big bedroom offering a double bed and an en-suite bathroom. There is a lounge and dining room with an indoor braai and fully equipped kitchen, and there is a door leading out from the bedroom into the garden.

Each of the two Cottages is furnished with a double and a single bed and has an en-suite bathroom. Bedding, towels, soap and toilet paper is provided and heaters are also available. The kitchenette is equipped with a microwave, a toaster, tea and coffee facilities, a bar fridge as well as all cutlery and crockery. Please note the units do not have a stove or an electric hot plate but do have outside braai and gas skottel braais. There is also no cleaning service for self-catering. Cellphone reception is available and Wi-Fi, sold per Gig, as well as a laundry and ironing service is available at an additional cost.

For the more adventurous, there is also camping in the veld and guests need to bring all their own essentials. Provided at the camp is a bucket shower, a long drop toilet, a boiling pot to heat water, a bucket to transfer water to the shower, a braai rooster, a table and chairs, a spade, a rubbish drum and borehole drinking water from the windmill pump. Firewood is also available at an additional cost.

In addition to the peace and quiet of the vast Karoo scenery, there are opportunities for hiking, birding and game viewing thanks to the vast numbers and great diversity of species as well as the rare species found only at Karoo Pred-A-Tours. Karoo Pred-A-Tours is also home to a program designed to protect and provide public awareness for the Caracal, the African Wild Cat, the Small Spotted Cat and the unusual looking Serval
