South Africans and thirsty Nelson Mandela Bay residents, the numbers are in, and they paint a critical picture of Nelson Mandela Bay’s water supply. Whilst one significant dam level has increased, the biggest leak isn’t in the Western Region; it’s in our municipal infrastructure.

Here are the facts:

  • 65% of Nelson Mandela Bay’s water comes from the Gariep Dam, which saw rising levels throughout 2025.
  • Nelson Mandela Bay has a TOTAL reliance on external water sources (Free State and Sarah Baartman Districts).
  • 35% of the municipalities water comes from dams to the west, four of which fall within the Sarah Baartman District.
  • BUT… 60% of that water is lost BEFORE it reaches consumers taps due to municipal infrastructure failure.

What does that mean? The municipality is responsible for wasting 223 Million Liters per day (MLD).

That is equivalent to losing 90 OLYMPIC-SIZED SWIMMING POOLS DAILY.

We are importing water from across the country, only for more than half of it to disappear through broken pipes. We cannot afford this waste.

Statement by Heinrich Müller MPL – DA EC Midlands Constituency Leader:

The people of Nxuba and surrounding areas in the Inxuba Yethemba Municipality have now entered their seventh consecutive day without water.

In the very month that South Africans commemorate Human Rights Day on 21 March, these residents are being denied their fundamental right to water.

Residents, businesses, and essential services have been left without a reliable water supply for an extended period.

This situation has now escalated beyond a routine service disruption. It directly impacts the constitutional right of residents to access sufficient water and poses an immediate threat to public health, dignity, and local economic activity.

I have therefore written to the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Zolile Williams, urging him to intervene urgently to spare the people of Nxuba any further hardship.

The water crisis reportedly stems from the failure of two water pumps allegedly damaged following a high-voltage surge linked to Eskom infrastructure.

Although these pumps were initially declared repaired, this intervention proved ineffective, and they have since been returned to East London for further repairs.

The current circumstances point to a serious breakdown in infrastructure resilience and response coordination. More concerning, however, is the apparent lack of urgency in resolving the crisis.

Communities cannot be expected to endure prolonged water outages without clear communication, credible timelines, or sufficient emergency relief.

MEC Williams and CoGTA must urgently intervene to stabilise the situation and restore water supply without further delay.

The current situation is untenable. Immediate and decisive action is required to protect both livelihoods and basic human dignity.

In the upcoming Local Government Elections the people of Inxuba Yethemba can vote in a responsible DA government that will focus on service delivery, safety and jobs. A DA government that will get the Inxuba Yethemba Municipality working.

Volunteers Turn Derelict Historic Building into a Thriving Community Centre

A once derelict heritage building in Welcome Glen in Glencairn Valley, Cape Town, has been turned into a thriving community centre through a partnership between government and local volunteers.

Welcome Cottage, an early 19th?century Cape Dutch homestead, was declared a national monument in 1985 and is protected by the National Heritage Resources Act.

According to the Welcome Glen Community Voluntary Association (WGCVA), the farmhouse was built between 1810 and 1812. The property was leased to Johannes Henricus Brand by the Cape Government.

The farm has, over the years, produced vegetables, flowers, bark for tanning purposes, dairy produce and corn.

Around 1820, Brand built a watermill on the Else River. This mill was in use until at least 1842, with the local farmers bringing their wheat to make bread for a nearby bakery.

Since 1993, the farmhouse has been in disrepair.

The cottage is now called the Welcome Glen Farmhouse.

WGCVA chairperson Conway Lotter said the building had long been “an eyesore”. About five years ago, the association had approached the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), the custodian of the building, and developed a proposal to revive it.

“We’ve now been here for nine months,” said Lotter.

As part of the restoration project, the association worked with the Simon’s Town Museum and the Fish Hoek Valley Museum to research the site’s history.

In the entrance to the farmhouse there is now a community notice board for local events and a display where small businesses can advertise. There is a nursery and a small coffee shop.

The farmhouse has been used for book launches, neighbourhood watch meetings, memorials and other community events.

Bridgette Wirth, who hosts workshops for children at the cottage, said, “I think it’s fantastic that this place has turned around to be something that the whole community can access.”

“There are so many derelict buildings all around the country that could be better used.”

SAHRA has leased out several heritage properties to ensure they are maintained. The Old Congregational Church in Cradock, for example, is leased to Hello Cradock in partnership with the local church council.

Ben Mwasinga, a senior manager at SAHRA, said the lease agreement with Welcome Glen Community Voluntary Association is a standard three?year commercial lease. The tenant covers operating costs and maintains the property, and all upgrades must comply with the National Heritage Resources Act.

“SAHRA supports initiatives where a heritage property can shift from disuse to meaningful activity that benefits both the community and the long?term conservation of the site,” he said.

Indigenous plants and herbs are for sale at the nursery.

JobsConnectEC, a DA driven initiative, was launched last year in Gqeberha as a community-focused programme aimed at addressing the province’s severe unemployment crisis by offering hands-on support to residents who are actively seeking work.

The Eastern Cape continues to face the highest unemployment levels in South Africa. The latest quarterly labour force survey shows that there are more people looking for work than employed in our province.

In rural areas like Graaff Reinet, roughly three out of five people, particularly young people, remain locked out of the economy despite having the willingness and potential to work.

JobsConnectEC is designed to bridge the gap between job seekers and opportunity. At the Graaff-Reinet event participants will receive guidance on compiling professional CVs, registering their skills, and preparing for interviews. They will also be able to access information about available training opportunities and job search resources.

A key component of the initiative is ensuring that job seekers leave with practical next steps rather than empty promises.

By bringing JobsConnectEC directly into communities such as Graaff-Reinet, the DA aims to ensure that smaller towns are not excluded from employment initiatives and that residents outside major urban centres also gain access to support and opportunities.

The Accused and the Allegations

The central figure is Deon Gerber, a former marketing agent for the school who was employed between 2015 and 2022.

The Scheme: It is alleged that between 2017 and 2023, Gerber misled corporate and private sponsors by providing them with his personal Capitec bank account details instead of the official account for the Fish River Educational Trust, which manages Marlow’s finances.

The Total: The charge sheet lists 36 suspicious transactions totaling R646,965.

Major Victims: High-profile agricultural service providers were affected, including BKB (R182,750) and Cradock Seed (R131,000).

How the Fraud was Discovered

The scheme remained undetected for years and only came to light in May 2023, seven months after Gerber had already left the school.

A prominent Nxuba businessman intended to donate R12,750 to the school.

A “slip of the finger” caused him to type an extra “2,” accidentally transferring R122,750.

When the businessman approached the school to request a refund of the R110,000 overpayment, the school realized they had no record of the transaction—nor of the bank account the money had been sent to.
