This is a panoramic shot I took just as the sun’s direct light was leaving Death Valley for one of the last times in 2007.
Boja and I were well on our way towards the "Borax haystacks" near (as the crow flies) the Harmony Borax Works. This was one of the most beautiful and otherworldly hikes that I have ever taken.
That white stuff on the ground is wonderfully crunchy salt, not snow. The yellow hills a ways back are Mustard Canyon. I have seen them called "badlands". They were pretty nicelands, actually, though they wouldn’t do for any kind of gardening.
This series of overlapping photos was stitched together with Microsoft’s ICE (Image Composite Editor). It’s like Autostitch with an interface and more.

Many visitors cannot understand why there are no fishin some of the lakes that, to their eyes, seem just as well 276 THE LAKE OF THE SKY —LAKE TAHOE adapted for fish as others that possess an abundance. Evenold timers do not all know the reason. If a lake is shal-low, when the deep snow falls it soon sinks below the sur-face in a heavy mushy mass that presses down upon the fishand prevents their breathing. Then, if a severe frost fol-lows and the mass freezes the ice squeezes the fish to thebottom. Over three years ago Watson took fish to BessieLake, putting in as many as 6000 fry of Lake Tahoe andother species. The next year, and the following years theywere all right, having grown to eight or nine inches inlength. Then came a severe winter and in the spring therewas not a living fish left. The bottom was strewn withthem, many of them with broken backs.

evated ridge to the westward, we could perceivethat a part of the valley was overhung with a cloudof smoke, which partially disclosed a few conside-rable buildings, and no doubt arose from that portionof the city which continues to be inhabited. Wecould distinguish pretty clearly the roofs of two orthree buildings resembling temples, two arched gate-ways, and three pagodas, one of which, from its su-perior size and stateliness, and its proximity to theriver, we immediately concluded to be the famousporcelain tower, and in this opinion we were con-firmed by our Chinese conductors. The desolation which took place in this ancientseat of the native Sovereigns may no doubt be ascribedto the Tartar conquerors, who demolished the impe-rial palace, and even the sepulchres, in the rage ofwar. Much, however, may be attributed to anotherreason, which sufficiently explains why, except theGreat wall, there are few ancient monuments inChina. CHAPTER XXIX HUNTING AT LAKE TAHOE IN the chapter on the Birds and Animals of the TahoeRegion I have written of the game to be found. Thereare few places left in the Sierras where such good deer-and bear-hunting can be found as near Tahoe. During thedense snow-falls the deer descend the western slopes, ap-proaching nearer and nearer to the settlements of the upperfoothills, and there they do fairly well until the snow be-gins to recede in the spring. They keep as near to the snowline as possible, and are then as tame and gentle almost assheep. When the season opens, however, they soon flee tocertain secret recesses and hidden lairs known to none butthe old and experienced guides of the region. There areso many of these wooded retreats, however, and the Tahoearea is so vast, that it is seldom an expert goes out for deer(or bear) that he fails. Hence the sportsman is always as-sured of something worth while. As for bear I have told elsewhere of recent hunts on Mt.iFreel from Tallac, and
