Cradock – The new U-23 world champion Grant van der Walt has confirmed his entry for the Fish River Canoe Marathon in Cradock next weekend, adding further spice to what is sizing up to be the most competitive KL1 championship race in years.

Van der Walt grabbed his second U-23 world title with an emphatic performance at the world champs in Rome two weeks ago, and has returned home determined to improve on his fourth at the last K1 race in 2009.

“It has been a bit of an up and down year for me with my back injury and then having to pull out of Berg halfway through so the win at the world champs really was incredible for me,� said van der Walt.

“I’m really looking to heading down to Cradock this weekend now though and I’m definitely keen to do better than I did in 2009 this time around.�

“That was quite an unfocused year for me and my paddling has definitely improved a lot since then and after world champs I’m feeling fit and strong,� he added.

The Team Best 4 Kayak Centre athlete will have his work cut out for him, with a hugely potent field that includes defending K1 champion Len Jenkins, van der Walt’s twice victorious K2 partner Hank McGregor, triple Dusi champ Andy Birkett, former K2 world marathon champ Cam Schoeman, local stars Ryan and Greg Louw as well as his eager and in-form younger brother Brandon van der Walt.

“You never know what could happen at the Fish. There are always so many guys there and you never know who will be the surprise package each year,� said van der Walt.

“Hank and Len are obviously in fantastic form after world champs but I’ve been training a lot with them and I definitely do not doubt my training and preparation so hopefully I can be up there with them.�

“The three of us, along with a group of others, have been training together for the past three months so if I can hang on to them and try just be there after day one then yes, there may be a chance I could win.�

“Hank and Len are phenomenal athletes though. They’re the benchmark, especially on the Fish so it will be really tough.�

“I asked my brother just the other day who won the Fish before Len and we had to look it up because we didn’t have a clue. He’s dominated things in a K1 on the Fish throughout the 2000’s and is definitely the man to beat.

“Fortunately though I know how he trains and how he races so hopefully I can stay with him on portage across the dam wall and then try race him on the water after that. It will definitely be a tough race though and really I’m excited for this year’s race,� he added.

Not only will van der Walt have a world class field to contend with but a challenging few obstacles early on in the encounter will put participants under extra pressure which could well be a major turning point in the race for some.

“Toastrack, Keith’s Flyover and a couple others are all big deciders early on in the race,� said van der Walt. “Then you get the portage over the dam wall which is also crucial, and I’ve heard rumours that the portage has changed slightly this year which will be interesting.�

“You’ve basically got to sprint it like an absolute monkey, without completely killing yourself though, because you’ve got to be able to put in at the bottom and you still have a good way to go.�

“Anything can happen in a big rapid, especially when there’s a bit of pressure. It’s so important that not only do you make it through the rapid safely but you make it through in the right place as well so when you get to the bottom you are in a position to react to what’s going on up front,� he added.

With two Hansa Fish K2 titles under his belt, which undoubtedly sweeten the taste ever so slightly, van der Walt’s enthusiasm for the event is unwavering and it is an event the fast developing star looks forward to every year.

“It’s been a while since I was on a river so I’m looking forward to getting wet again. The Berg was the last river I was on and that was back in July so I’m really looking forward to it and Fish is always such a great race and so much fun so it should be an awesome weekend,� said van der Walt.

“Everyone is stuck in the same small town together and isn’t much more than a square kilometre away from everyone else. You do your shopping together, you see each other out and about all the time and everyone’s there for the river race but also to have a great time and I’m sure it will be the same again this year.�

This love for the event, together with the recent lift he received from his impressive World Marathon Champs achievement, could well see the under 23 competitor mixing it up with the best of the best throughout the exciting two-day affair.

“River racing and marathon racing are very different so my world champs result won’t have a huge influence on this weekend I don’t think but it is nice for the confidence,� said van der Walt.

“I’m not going to go into Fish thinking I’m the best the world but the win definitely helps me believe in my ability, it’s great that all my hard work seems to be paying off and I’m definitely in a happy place and feel quite positive at the moment and I’m ready to have some fun on a great river,� he added.

The Fish River Canoe Marathon takes place in Cradock on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 October 2012 and will decide the SA K1 River Championships.

Olympic bronze medallist Bridgitte Hartley has added her name to the ballooning entry for next weekend’s Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon to support the charity drive spearheaded by former Springbok captain Corné Krige.

Hartley, who won the bronze medal in the 500m women’s K1 final at the London Olympics last month, has become an overnight celebrity, and said she was eager to use this new profile to make a meaningful contribution through her sport.

Krige, who has close family ties to Cradock and is paddling in his first Fish, started the charity drive to raise funds to assist several badly under-resourced schools in the Cradock area. When Hartley heard about the initiative she was quick to put her hand up.

“It has been such a whirlwind since getting home from the Olympics, and I was looking forward to a chance to catch up with all my paddling friends at the Hansa Fish,” said Hartley. “When I read about the drive to help to schools I immediately wanted to get involved, and hopefully encourage all the paddlers doing the race and the general public to support it.”

Hartley will be paddling in a K3 with the Burden brothers Craig and Nick, both very competitive paddlers, and while she speaks of it being a social outing, there is little doubt that they will test the ability of their K3 to cover the 82km course as fast as possible to made an added statement.

She has raced the Hansa Fish competitively before, with a K2 second to her credit.

Paddlers will be asked to support the charity drive by buying a special Corné Krige Charity Drive sticker for R50 to display on their boats as a gesture of support for the school upgrade drive. Donations in support of this campaign can also be made into the race’s bank account, details of which are available on the website www.fishmarathon.org.za

At 4pm on the Thursday of the race registration Krige and Hartley will be available to autograph the stickers purchased by the paddlers.

“It is just the sort of opportunity I have been looking for to give something back through canoeing,” said Hartley.

“I have hardly sat in a boat since the Olympics but I really wanted to be part of the Hansa Fish, which is a really great event. It is a race where the paddling community really socialises together, and has in the past been able to make a difference to local charity drives, like the helping the Cradock Cancer Care unit.”

“It is really exciting for us as paddlers to come to Cradock, enjoy a fantastic weekend of great racing on the river, great hospitality off the water, and then to leave three days later having made a significant contribution to the town,” she added.

The Hansa Fish takes place in Cradock on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 October and will decide the SA K1 River Championships.

ALL roads lead to Buckfastleigh this weekend as The Simmertones top the bill at the town’s all-action music festival.

The ever-popular ska band will be playing tunes from their recent EP Everything’s Coming Up Ska, which also featured the talents of guitarist Steve Cradock.

Cradock – Former Springbok rugby captain Corné Krige has thrown his weight behind the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon’s annual support of local charities by pledging his commitment to the race in an effort to raise funds for local underprivileged school children.

Despite being better known for his efforts on the rugby field, having earned 39 caps in the green and gold, Krige is also a surfski enthusiast and is looking forward to teaming up with long-time school friend and Cradock resident Billy van Zyl and Fish race organiser Pieter Marais in a K3 (three-seater kayak) as the trio look to complete the 84km journey.

“It’s obviously very exciting,� Krige said via a statement released to the media on Thursday. “I live very close to the sea in Melkbosstrand in Cape Town so I have my own surfski but I use that mainly for recreation and a bit of exercise so this is something very different to anything I’m used to.�

“A couple of years ago I was invited to do the Breede and I really enjoyed that but I’ve never done anything like this before and I certainly haven’t sat in a boat for anywhere near five hours, which I’m told is how long we’re aiming to take on the first day, at any one time so it’s definitely going to be interesting.�

“I’m busy preparing for next year’s ABSA Cape Epic so I’ve been spending all my time training on the bike and none in the boat so I definitely haven’t trained enough for it but hopefully I can sit in the middle of the K3 and let the others pull me along,� he chuckled.

Having spent their time at Paarl Boys’ High School together Krige and Van Zyl have been good friends for some time so when Van Zyl suggested the idea and at the same they would be able to support children in need, a passion of Krige’s, it didn’t take long for planning to commence.

“I’ve known Billy for years and he has been trying to get me to do Fish for a little while now,� explained Krige. “Then I was in PE a little while ago when De Wet Barry went through a bad time with the loss of his child and Billy was there to,� said Krige.

“Again he mentioned the Fish and I have a couple of friends who have done the race a few times and really enjoyed it so I gave it some thought.�

“I’m always keen to try help out, especially with kids, so when Billy phoned back a couple weeks later and explained the charity side of things and that we’d be able to donate the money not only to one charity but to lots of different charities, all involving children, I was very excited,� he added.

Besides their decades-old friendship, Krige and Van Zyl have developed a unique connection and understanding of one another in recent years after both have had to overcome one of life’s most difficult traumas.

In 2009 Krige tragically lost both his four and one-year-old niece and nephew in a freak accident on his sister-in-law’s farm in 2009 whilst Van Zyl himself had to deal with heartache and pain of losing a child of his own when his young son heartbreakingly drowned in a swimming pool a few years ago.

It is this understanding and bond that these two good friends share that is the primary driving force behind their Fish initiative and their passion to help other young children in need that they hope will rub off on others they come into contact with.

For the Fish River Canoe Marathon, renowned for the work it does for the small Eastern Cape town of Cradock, this is yet another example of the remarkable impact the race has had on the region and again enforces just why it is regarded as more than just a paddling race by so many.

“The ability to give back to the community is extremely important to us at the Hansa Fish and to be able to get involved in what Billy (Van Zyl) and Corné (Krige) are out to achieve is very special for us,� said Marais.

“We place a huge emphasis on ensuring every cent raised, over and above the costs of the race, goes back into the community and that can be seen by the fact that we are able to support the Cradock Cansa Care Centre, SPCA and Old Age Home all through the charity batch, the Round Table manages the bar, local churches have food stalls during the event and schools are involved as well,� he added.

With the cameras in hot pursuit and all eyes closely watching the trio’s progress throughout the two day spectacle Marais is all too aware the heat will be on, particularly for himself and Van Zyl who are old hands on the river, come 5 and 6 October.

“It has put quite a bit of pressure on Billy and I to perform and not to make any mistakes,� chuckled Marais. “It’s just fantastic to have a personality as big as Corné (Krige) come take part in our event though.�

“Everyone involved in the race is really excited to have him with us and it will be really fun to be able to do the race with such a good sportsman and for such a good cause.�

The Fish marathon takes place in Cradock on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 October and will decide the SA K1 River Championships.
 

Sino-British talks on building the new airport at Chek Lap Kok almost broke down in 1991 after Beijing insisted the agreement be signed by the two heads of government in the Chinese capital, according to a new book by a former top mainland official.

Detailing heated exchanges between Beijing and London, Chen Zuoer , a key negotiator on issues leading up to the 1997 handover, recalls how Percy Cradock, foreign policy adviser to the then British prime minister, John Major, eventually backed down.

Chen, a former deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, was a member from 1994 to 1997 of the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group that discussed handover arrangements.

He writes in Negotiations on The Handover of Sovereignty of Hong Kong – A Witness Recount that during a visit to Beijing in June 1991, Cradock pushed for the airport deal to be signed at that time between him and Lu Ping , then director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office. Told of Beijing’s requirement, Cradock backed down but wanted the welcoming ceremony for Major to be held at Beijing Airport, rather than Tiananmen Square where the pro-democracy movement had been suppressed two years earlier.

Lu said it must be held in Tiananmen Square, “otherwise, there won’t be any red carpets for your Prime Minister,” according to the book. Cradock finally agreed and Major visited the capital in July 1991, the first head of a leading Western country to do so after the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Chen will appear at the launch ceremony of the book in Hong Kong tomorrow.

A person close to Chen said he chose to publish the book shortly after the 15th anniversary of the handover to highlight the importance of the Basic Law for Hong Kong’s development.

Chen also writes in the book that during a talk with Lu in Beijing in October 1992, governor Chris Patten had no idea of the existence of seven letters exchanged between the foreign ministers of Britain and China in early 1990, in which the two countries had reached agreement on Hong Kong’s constitutional development.

Patten’s political reform package for the 1994-95 elections angered Beijing. According to the book, this was because his plans differed markedly from the letters between the two sides.

A pub has won a national award for having the best cellar.

The Cradock Arms, in Knighton Road, Leicester, was named winner in the category of the Great British Pub Awards.

The Cradock Arms had already been chosen as the best cellar in East and West Midlands and Wales region and beat other regional winners to the national title.

The pub is run by Jonathan and Leah Wainwright.

Rob Willock, editor of the Publican’s Morning Advertiser, which organised the awards, said: “Good-quality beer has been at the heart of the revival of The Cradock Arms.

“The judges were impressed with the couple’s dedication to getting cellar management right.”

According to the Broll Office Market Report, Rosebank is being revived with great retail and exciting new office developments supported by the surrounding residential nodes and the Gautrain station. Rosebank is fast becoming the city’s third high-rise business centre after Sandton and the inner city.

The cranes are certainly busy in the block bordered by Oxford Road, Baker Street, Cradock Avenue and Bolton Road. This was the short lived address of the office building 30 Baker Street, the Lindsay Saker dealership and the Sanlam Arena. Some may remember how the Sanlam Arena was built on the site of the old Arena Theatre- hence the name. Prior to that, this was the site of the Rosebank Primary School before it moved to its current location in 1974.

Johannesburg City council relaxed its height restrictions and approved SBREI’s high-density office and retail development on the southern side of the precinct. Phase one is the construction of an 11-storey building. The bank has the rights to go up to 20 storeys but has opted for a lower building with a larger footprint. Standard Bank was one of the first companies to join the Green Building Council in 2008. As a green building, it should be more energy and resource efficient. The Standard Bank development will comprise 125,000sq m mixed-use development. The bank’s new property will cost R1.6 billion and should be finished off this year.

The property will accommodate 5 600 Standard Bank employees and is aimed at alleviating some of the stress placed on the bank’s current infrastructure. Standard Bank has over 60 000 square metres of office development and the iconic Oxford Corner is all but complete offering 9 000 square metres of premium-grade office space.

The news that has slowly unfolded over the last year has been Hyprop’s intentions for the block encompassing the Rosebank Mall, Tsogo Sun (formerly The Grace) and Cradock Heights.

On the corner of Cradock and Tyrwhitt Avenues Hyprop has purchased Cradock Heights, a commercial property with a GLA of 4,745sqm.Hyprop also purchased (somewhat infamously) a 70% undivided share in the office park Nedbank Gardens on Bath Avenue directly opposite the Mall. This landmark building was demolished earlier in April this year.

“Through the two acquisitions Hyprop is consolidating its presence around the Mall to maximise densities and improve connectivity to the office precinct and Gautrain station,”said FinancialDirector Laurence Cohen.

In short Hyprop intends on almost doubling the Rosebank Mall’s lettable area from 35 000sqm to 62 000sqm, an increase from 101 stores to 161 at a cost of R920 million at an expected yield of 7%. The extensions to the mall will span Bath Avenue and link to the former Nedbank Gardens site.Five new basement parking levels will be constructed here and will be accessible via both Sturdee and Bath Avenues for increased convenience.

The existing centre will remain accessible via Baker Street and the entrance adjacent to the Shell Garage on Bath Avenue. Construction on the 25 month project began in August and is expected to be completed by September 2014.

A number of well-known local and international brands are already secured for the new space. New tenants include retailers with household names like a full line Woolworths Platinum store, a double level Edgar’s department store, Dis-Chem, Mr Price Sports and Jet.

Existing tenants including Stuttafords, Truworths, Mr Price, Queenspark and Foschini, will all be upgraded or expanded to offer the latest new store concepts and merchandise. Other new boutique offerings include Pringle, Ben Sherman, Kurt Geiger and Earthchild.

Rosebank is one of the few urban areas in Johannesburg with a strong pedestrian culture and a thriving street life. When asked about the new development’s influence on that, Hyprop chief executive officer Pieter Prinsloo told property24 that: “We intend capitalising on these characteristics by creating strong physical linkages with the natural urban corridors that connect the lower Rosebank office blocks to the upper retail parts and the Rosebank Gautrain Station.”

The redevelopment will also connect to the new Tsogo Sun hotel, 54 Bath, as well as create a north-south pedestrian walkway between the Standard Bank development on Baker Street and the taxi rank on Cradock Avenue.

But the Rosebank Mall isn’t the only mall where there is movement. Diagonally opposite the Firs on Biermanann Avenue is the Tiber on Oxford Road which is still taking occupation. After many years of contentious redevelopment applications constrained by the remainder of a half-destroyed historical building, development approval was finally given in mid-2008 for an office building at the well-known corner of Jellicoe Avenue and Oxford Road. The building is intended for offices only and measures 8,416 m² of offices over eight floors.

What’s coming to the other part of the same block housing the Tiber is the big news. Directly opposite the Firs will be “The Bierman”, the name may change, designed by GLH Architects, it will comprise two linked structures made up of glass and green walls.This will bring over 30 000 square metres of office space to let to the Rosebank office market. The Bierman will accommodate three floors of basement parking space, an atrium level, three above-ground parking levels, and 9 floors of office space. That’s 12 floors above ground.

Although still at the proposal stage, it’s disappointing to note that there is no mixed retail component in the plans given that Rosebank is such a pedestrian friendly community. The Firs is in the heart of pedestrian movement in Rosebank which is strongly emerging as an investment node.The centre was originally built in the 1970s and underwent a multimillion rand redevelopment in September 2009.

A more recent redevelopment included a new restaurant piazza which provides synergies with the rest of Rosebank’s pedestrian and street-level shopping complexes.The restaurant piazza opens onto Cradock Avenue and is intended to create a seamless flow with the rest of the Rosebank shopping node.

The Firs itself has changed hands – Investec Property Fund has acquired the landmark, mixed use retail centre for R272m.The fund purchased the property in a related party acquisition from Investec Property as part of its intention to build its portfolio.Investec Property Fund CEO Sam Leon describes it as “a trophy asset for the fund in that it’s a high profile asset poised for on-going growth.”

Perhaps just a footnote as far as development is concerned but worth mentioning is The Rose, a development going up on the corner of Sturdee and Jellicoe Avenues.This high-end four-storey building, which offers 2,852m² of office space and 100 parking bays, is being built opposite the Rosebank Primary School.

Finally The Zone. Already a formidable presence in Rosebank with some 123 shops and a four star Holiday Inn, The Zone II is still a long way from completion. The Standard Bank building on Cradock Avenue is still to be torn down and further building to take place. The Zone Phase II offers loft offices and two floors of retail. Pedestrians can gain access from Oxford Road and Tyrwhitt Mall, and via a direct entrance to the Rosebank Gautrain station and Bus Rapid Transport system. The Zone Phase II integrates with The Zone Phase I on the south side and The Firs on the north.

The Rosebank Management District and Lower Management District have been working in conjunction with various government and private partners to reduce crime, clean up the area and increase service delivery.

“Rosebank is reviving, with great retail and new office developments which are well-supported by the surrounding residential nodes and the Gautrain station,” said Jane Parker, area specialist and commercial broker at Broll commercial property services group.

Rosebank has so much more to offer than mere office space: A pulsating African Craft Market, a Sunday rooftop market, 8 Hotels, 220 retail outlets (with more to come when The Mall redevelopment is finished and the Zone phase 2 is complete.) nearly 50 restaurants and cafes, 7 night clubs, 10 art galleries, 20 cinemas all linked with a vibrant pedestrian friendly network of concourses and walkways. It’s no wonder that there are cranes on the Rosebank skyline.

Two men charged with stabbing a man in Marshfield’s Brant Rock neighborhood July 4 are due back in court this month. Their alleged getaway driver has a hearing next month.

Jarod J. McCormack, 24, Building 7, Village at Marshfield Apartments, Marshfield, and Thomas M. Cradock, 23, 20E Ames St., Dorchester, are accused of stabbing a 20-year-old man during the early morning hours of July 4. Both of their hearings Wednesday were rescheduled to Sept. 25.

The victim, who survived the attack, suffered a broken jaw and several stab wounds, Marshfield police Chief Phil Tavares, then police captain, told the Marshfield Mariner after the arrests.

McCormack and Cradock face charges of attempted murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery.

Stephanie M. Neas, 26, 12 Virginia Road, Holbrook, faces the same charges after she allegedly drove the two men away from the scene. Neas’ probable cause hearing on Wednesday was continued to Oct. 5.

The three individuals were arrested between July 7 and 10.

The Southern Kings yesterday confirmed they have signed Sharks lock Steven Sykes on a two-year deal that will commence at the completion of this year’s Absa Currie Cup.

The 28 year old, who hails from Cradock in the Eastern Cape, returned to the Durban side in January after a stint with Irish club Leinster and although he has had a number of good runs, he has started feeling the heat from young guns like Pieter Steph du Toit.

His experience will nonetheless bolster the Kings who have been relying on Barend Pieterse to lead their pack. “Sykes is on board and we are delighted to have signed up a player of his calibre,” said Kings chief executive Anele Pamba.

“We have been keeping a close eye on him and we’ve finally concluded everything.

“He impressed us, hence we wasted no time in bringing him to Port Elizabeth.”

Sykes will now compete with Pieterse, former Lions and Cheetahs lock David Bullbring, Clint Newman and Bobby Dyer for a place in the Super Rugby side.

Other players that have been lured to the franchise next year include Western Province flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis and ex-Lions wing Michael Killian.

Kings president Cheeky Watson has in the meanwhile said they won’t be pushing the SA Rugby Union to prolong their Super Rugby stay to two years despite their window for contracting players being cut short because of red tape within the organisation.

Phamba said the Eastern Cape side was doing everything in their power to ensure they have a competitive squad.

A man who helped a person needing hospital treatment later went with an associate and burgled that person’s home, Invercargill District Court was told yesterday.

Timothy Sheldon Cradock, 20, admitted a charge of burglary when he appeared before Judge Kevin Phillips yesterday.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Penny Stratford said Cradock was employed at a licensed establishment which had an apartment nearby.

On September 1, a resident in that apartment had to be taken to hospital by ambulance.

Cradock assisted that resident before they were taken to hospital, she said.

Later, Cradock and an associate drove around Invercargill discussing the person’s unsecured apartment before returning to it, entering it and taking a television, she said. The incident was captured on CCTV.

Cradock’s lawyer Simon Claver said his client was sorry for his actions.

Judge Phillips said the offending was a “major abuse of trust”.

He sentenced Cradock to 120 hours’ community work.

Jarrod Douglas Tuffley, 21, was sentenced to 140 hours’ community work for an assault on August 18.

Michael Coulter, 22, was remanded on bail to October 26 for sentence for assaulting a female on August 26.

Aaron Jason King, 22, saw miller, was remanded on bail to October 26 for sentence for assaulting two people on August 18.

Danielle Josephine Stanley, 27, was sentenced to 60 hours’ community work and nine months’ supervision for assaulting her mother and sister on May 31.

Luke Harrington, 21, was sentenced to five months’ community detention, 70 hours’ community work and nine months’ supervision for two charges of assaulting a female and intentionally damaging windows on June 10.

Natasha Lynette Manuel, 17, was sentenced to 120 hours’ community work and 12 months’ supervision for assault and possessing an offensive weapon, a knife, on June 24.

Kegan Roy Folster, 18, was sentenced to 150 hours’ community work for an assault on August 11.

Jordan Albert McDowall, 18, was remanded on bail to October 23 for sentence for an assault at Dunedin on August 25.

Fulton Whakaari, of Winton, was remanded on bail to October 26 for sentence after he admitted stealing a wallet and eftpos card valued at $115 on August 11, stealing a wallet, cash and eftpos cards valued at $100 at Winton on August 12, and dishonestly taking two documents, namely ATM cards, with intent to obtain pecuniary advantage on July 20 at Gore.

Breach
Joel Allan Linwood was remanded in custody to September 10 for sentence after he admitted breaching his community detention and breaching his intensive supervision on August 18.

Intimidation
Ricky James Watson-Barclay, 25, pest control worker, of Gore, was sentenced to 100 hours’ community work for threatening to injure a person, knowing his conduct was likely to intimidate, at Gore on August 16.

Cannabis
Barry Alan Richard Lang, 34, was remanded on bail to October 29 for a disputed facts hearing after he admitted cultivating cannabis between January 1 and August 24.

Driving
James Rangi Hawira, 54, was sentenced to 150 hours’ community work, 12 months’ supervision and disqualified from driving for 12 months for driving with a breath alcohol level of 1293mcg on September 2.

The court was told Hawira was found asleep in a car parked in a driveway, with the engine running and lights on.

Police had to smash their way into the car to wake him, and his level of intoxication was such that when questioned, police could not understand what he was saying.

Robb Ruskin Ballantine, 21, electrician, was sentenced to 70 hours’ community work and disqualified from driving for 12 months for unnecessary speed on August 23. An order for confiscation of his vehicle was also made.

Brad Murray Hamilton, 29, was sentenced to four months’ community detention, 150 hours’ community work and disqualified for one year and three months for driving while disqualified and with a breath alcohol level of 977mcg on July 8.

Aaron Rex Brown, 19, dairy worker, of Otautau, was sentenced to six months’ community detention, 150 hours’ community work, 12 months’ supervision and disqualified indefinitely for driving dangerously, driving while disqualified and with a breath alcohol level of 823mcg at Winton on June 22.

Benjamin John Oughton, 18, sheetmetal worker, was sentenced to 80 hours’ community work, nine months’ supervision and disqualified from driving for nine months after he admitted driving with a breath alcohol level of 646mcg and driving while suspended on September 2.

Hayden Craig Nelson, 21, painter, was sentenced to 100 hours’ community work and disqualified from driving for nine months after he admitted driving while disqualified and with a sustained loss of traction on August 12.

Peter McKinnel, 22, meat worker, was sentenced to four months’ community detention, 150 hours’ community work and disqualified indefinitely for driving with a breath alcohol level of 1064mcg on July 7.

Two more big-name artists are attending The London Electric Guitar Show at London Olympia on November 10th and 11th – Jennifer Batten and Steve Cradock.

Batten, long-time guitarist for Michael Jackson, will play the Main Stage on Sunday and the Masterclass suite on Saturday, along with platinum-selling artist Richie Kotzen over the weekend.

The 31st edition of the Hansa Fish Canoe Marathon in Cradock will host the SA K1 River Championships title decider in October.

The race on October 5 and 6 will see undefeated K1 champion Len Jenkins back to try and retain his title at the Hansa Fish and in the process clinch the SA K1 title, the race organisers announced on Thursday.

Michéle Eray would make her return to the race after being laid low last year by a crippling wrist injury.

“The Hansa Fish is the country’s premier canoe marathon,” said SA Breweries Eastern Cape events manager Riaan van Jaarsveld.

“More than that, it has all the special ingredients that make it a truly unique ‘total experience’ where the visitors to Cradock can enjoy the warmth of the local hospitality, race hard, and really enjoy themselves off the water.”

IT took three extra holes before the JB Carr Trophy for 2012 was decided at Woodenbridge last week. In the end Ballinrobe edged home 3-2 against Ennis when Val McMahon and Joe Cradock won on the 20th against Tony Kehoe and Eamon Corry.

Earlier Michael Lee and Bart Crowley won a precious point for Ballinrobe at the 19th hole against Paul Higgins and Tony Coote after John Monahan and Richie Donohue started it all off with a 3 and 2 win over Pat Murphy and Matt Flynn.

The Ennis winners were Luke Coote and Eamon Kelly, who beat Charlie O’Sullivan and Eddie Hackett 1up and Noel Pyne and Johnny Cullinan with a 2 and 1 win over Frank Burke and Tom Conlisk.

CORRSTOWNS John Tomlin won Stafford Stack’s Presidents Prize at the North Dublin Golf Club Captains Association outing in Skerries last week.

Playing off a handicap of 11, Tomlin shot 40 points to edge out both David Coleman (24, Howth) and Paul Darby (Hollywood Lakes) on a countback, with Balbriggan’s Cyril Campbell next best on 38 points.

The other winners on the day in Skerries were Pat Norton of Roganstown, who came out on top in the senior category, while Malahide’s Bob McAdoo was the veterans victor, and the Super Veteran award went to Balbriggan’s Michael Monaghan. All three shot 37 points.

One-two for Shorts senior and junior   

IT was a Shorts family affair at the Edmondstown GC captain’s (Mick McKenna) prize last week when Ivor (the father) and Adam (the son) finished first and second.

Veteran Ivor, off 18, won the competition with excellent scores of 38 and 37 points for a total of 75. He became the first left-handed golfer to win the captain’s prize at Edmondstown since Joe Taylor back in 1944, the inaugural year of the club.

Adam shot 37 points in the second round to be runner-up – the first time in the club’s 68 years a father and son have occupied the top two spots. Playing in the second last threeball, Shorts senior kept his nerve in a thrilling finish and also lifted the veteran’s prize. Shorts junior, playing off 16, only joined the club last November and promises to have a great future in the South Dublin club.

IRELAND finished third in the Seniors European Team Championship at Lugano in Switzerland over the weekend when they beat Spain 3-2 in the third place play-off.

Earlier Ireland were unlucky not to make the final when they lost 3-2 to Italy with two matches going to tie-holes. Italy were crowned champions with a 3½-1½ win over top seeds France. The Irish team was: Sheena McElroy, Pat Doran, Suzanne Corcoran, Carol Wickham, Helen Jones and Violet McBride.

First All-Ireland for Rosapenna  

ROSAPENNA GC claimed their first All-Ireland pennant in their 119-year history when they came through at the third tie-hole against Dromoland in the Spanish Tourist Board sponsored All-Ireland Mixed Foursomes at Clontarf GC last week.

The decisive blow came when Con Boyce and Suzanne Gallagher scored a winning par four to the bogey five made by Mark Reynolds and Maria Nolan.

The foundation of Rosapenna’s victory was laid in the final two matches, where Enda Kennedy and Dympna Kelly beat Nicholas Duggan and Angela White 3 and 2, and then Marty McDermott and Orla Lemmy were 4 and 3 winners over Mark Hogan and Yvonne Shanahan.

Dromoland’s win came from Tony Cleary and Dorothea Madden, who beat Pat and Kit Boyce 2 and 1.

The final match between Frank Casey and Terri McBride against Declan O’Leary and Mary Arthur was called in from the 19th.

The Irish Mixed is Rosapenna’s first title, either at provincial or national level, a staggering fact considering the club is almost as old as the GUI itself, founded in 1893.

“It’s history because it’s our first time to win an Ulster title and our first time to win an All-Ireland title” said team captain Peter Smyth.

Kaarnalahti defends senior strokeplay  

FINLAND’S Minna Kaarnalahti will defend her Irish Senior Women’s Open Strokeplay title when competitors tee up at Royal Belfast tomorrow.

In last year’s championship at Greenore, Kaarnalahti fired a final round 77 to defeat Ireland’s Pauline Walsh from Headfort, Helen Jones (Strabane) and England’s Alison Bartlett by one shot after Walsh sensationally leap-frogged the field with a best-of-the-tournament 73.

The strongest challenge to Kaarnalahti’s title defence is likely to come from 2010 champion and current Irish Seniors’ Close title-holder Jones, and Canadians Alison Murdoch, Diane Williams and Alison Reilfers.

Fellow Irish Seniors’ Internationals Sheena McElroy (Grange), Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) and Violet McBride (Belvoir Park) will challenge for an Irish victory ahead of Friday’s announcement of the team to play in the Seniors Home Internationals in Scotland in early October.

Waterford claim first Barton Cup 

WATERFORD beat Corballis on Saturday to claim their first FBD Barton Cup title. What makes it all the more special is their names will be added to the Cup in the club’s Centenary Year. Waterford were 3-2 in front going into the second leg and proceeded to defeat the home side by 4-1 for a 7-3 overall victory.

DONABATE won the Best Cup with a 5½-4½ win over Newlands in the weather delayed final. Freddie Rogers and Brian Cummins beat the Newlands pair Tom Clarke and Ciarán O’Donnell 3 and 2. Hard luck on Newlands, who have finished runners for the four time since 2005, having last won in 1975.

Record-breaker McElroy up to scratch  

BALLYMENA’S Dermot McElroy set a new course record en route to a four-stroke victory in the 36-hole Rosapenna Senior Scratch Cup last Saturday, sponsored by McGinley Motors of Letterkenny.

The Irish international, 19, playing off plus four, fired a three-under-par 69 to set a new best for the Sandy Hills Links in his morning round before adding a level par 71 on the Old Tom Morris Links in the afternoon to win on three under 140 from Rathmore’s Ben Best, who shots rounds of 70 (-2) and 74 (+3).

Current British Amateur champion Alan Dunbar opened with a one-over-73 but dropped four shots in a three hole stretch from the 12th on the Old Tom Morris Links in the afternoon to finish well out of the frame.

McElroy carded six birdies and three bogeys in his course record 69. McElroy’s victory sees him join a high quality list of winners that includes current world number one Rory McIlroy in 2005.

The Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board is running a month-long campaign to promote responsible gambling and awareness.

As part of the campaign, the board has already visited Cradock and Aliwal North with the aim of interacting with councillors and managers from different departments and government agencies, as well as businesses.

The board said it had noticed an increase of 56% or about 4 million Eastern Cape citizens who had joined the gambling industry as an entertainment activity rather than an economic activity.

About 53% of Eastern Cape casino gamblers fall within the income category of R3201- R12800 with just more than 6% of gamblers earning more than R12 800 a month.

While the board regulates the industry and collects taxes from licencees, it said it needed to beef up its focus on responsible gambling. Gambling taxes collected from the industry in the Eastern Cape jumped from R90m in 2010-11 to R99m in 2011-12, with gross gaming revenue exceeding R1.2bn. This is a slight increase from the gross gaming revenue of R1.17bn in 2010-11.

“The board carries the additional responsibility of educating communities on the negative effects of problem gambling. said CEO Mabutho Zwane.

Police spokeswoman Captain Stefanie Smith said the victim, 58,
heard a knock at his door and opened it, as he had been expecting a relative on
Saturday morning.

His gardener forced his way into the home, threatened him with a
knife and demanded money, the Beeld reported..

The victim was stabbed in both arms, then wheeled into his
bedroom, where he was further assaulted.

When he fell out of his chair, he managed to reach his rifle,
which had been positioned next to his bed.

He fired one shot at his assailant, who was critically wounded
and later died at the scene.

Smith said a murder docket had been opened.

Eastern Cape – A paraplegic man shot and killed his gardener after the man attacked him in his Cradock home in the Eastern Cape, the Beeld reported on Monday.

Police spokeswoman Captain Stefanie Smith said the victim, 58, heard a knock at his door and opened it, as he had been expecting a relative on Saturday morning.

His gardener forced his way into the home, threatened him with a knife and demanded money, the paper reported.

The victim was stabbed in both arms, then wheeled into his bedroom, where he was further assaulted.

When he fell out of his chair, he managed to reach his rifle, which had been positioned next to his bed.

He fired one shot at his assailant, who was critically wounded and later died at the scene.
