The recently postponed budget speech following dissension in the ranks of the GNU was, to most reports, as a result of a proposed increase in VAT of two percentage points – from 15% to 17& VAT.

As any PR Professional or Journalist will tell you – any reaction to data is dependent upon how you present the good/bad news.

In any normal price increase situation a business will report an increase in prices by using a percentage – e.g. a 10% increase – in that way the general public can reference known numbers like the general inflation rate and even salary increase percentages to determine if the increase is palatable or not.

For the last two years South Africa’s published inflation rate (CPI) has hovered around 3% per annum.

The GNU were intending to report the number of percentage points increase in VAT (2%) rather than the actual percentage increase of VAT (13.33%) which is far in excess of the inflation rate – a number that the VAT man benefits from in the same way that SARS benefits from inflationary bracket creep.

Reporting the lower (true) number is a typical spin tactic as 2% is far more palatable than 13.33%.

There is a lesson in there somewhere.

South Africa’s Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, said in his leaked budget speech, that was meant to be delivered to Parliament on Wednesday, 19 February 2025, that the increase in VAT was to finance wage increases for civil servants along with other departments.

We propose to raise the VAT rate by 2 percentage points to 17 per cent – a necessary step that will enable us to:

• Fund public sector wage increases for our civil servants
• Expand early childhood development opportunities for our children
• Retain the teachers, doctors, and essential frontline workers that serve our communities
• Revitalise our commuter rail system to better serve working-class families
• Provide above-inflation increases to social grants for our most vulnerable

So what is to be done with the 19 February announcement by the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) that they had successfully concluded wage negotiations with a wage Increase, 5.5% for 2025/26, with future increases (2026/27 & 2027/28) linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

The CPI is the official measure of inflation in South Africa.

Let’s break it down:

In a large newsroom the journalist has no to very little say on editorial content at all – sub editors and editors will take the raw material and bend it to their editorial policy.

Buried in that editorial policy will be a very large resistance to freely giving hyperlinks/outlinks (outlinks take the visitor away from the site whilst hyperlinks can refer to internal or external links)  away to anyone who asks without a large monetary consideration attached – that is called advertising and carries a large cost.

Bottom line – asking for a link (with the implied threat of not providing the journalist with more content) does NOT work.

Let’s look at the sentence; “This will help us to continue to provide you with quality content.” and, after snorting our morning coffee through our noses, remind everyone that what is said there is closer to the untruth than the truth. A link out from a news site is ADVERTISING, plain and simple and MAY, in a very roundabout way, help provide you with more content.

BUT, the primary reasons for asking for a link from a news site are: To sell product and gain SEO rankings.

Here at MyPR we allow outlinks for Featured Press Releases as a means to make journalists lives easier to develop a story.

Here is a (not so) radical idea:

When providing outlinks in any press release provide links to more detailed information that the journalist can interrogate.

Provide outlinks to an ALTERNATIVE view to yours (inherent in here is the principal of ‘hearing the other side’).

Provide outlinks with the intent to allow all readers to find out more and make up their own minds.

At all times before providing outlinks stop and think; “Is this for more and better information or just for SEO?” Obviously ‘more and better information’ is the holy grail!

Think back to the start of the internet when web site owners would link out to other sites in the same industry in order to help internet users learn more – it was done in a helpful sharing manner until the search engines started rating the popularity of sites based on how many outlinks pointed to individual sites. From then the game was on.

One of the most famous set of keywords was ‘Click Here’ – a search on Google for ‘Click Here’ would lead you to the Adobe site. How did they accomplish that? By giving away their PDF reader which site owners when uploading PDF documents would ‘helpfully’ provide a link to Adobe’s PDF reader with the simple ‘Click Here’ exhortation!

Every year Volkswagen Africa have a media event in which media can ask questions and get feedback from the various players at VW.

They were originally styled as ‘off the record’ events and provided lots of background content for articles/reports during the ensuing year.

I have been attending these annual events since 2008 – representing MyPE and MyPR – and willingly reveal that I was always intimidated into silence by the heavyweight local motoring scribes in Bobby Cheetham and Bob Kernohan. Not because they were bombastic or anything negative but because they brought a respected and long pedigree to the party that I could only look at enviously.

Anyway – these two legends would always start the Question and Answer session with an enquiry as to when Volkswagen was bringing a small affordable bakkie to the local market – something to give the Nissan Champ bakkie a run for it’s money!

Well, they never got their wish so, when they both moved on, I felt a bit more confident and took a leaf out of their book by suggesting that Volkswagen should rather look at a rugged vehicle for AFRICA.

My thinking was along these lines:

1. A rugged no frills 4×4 vehicle like the Suzuki Jimny
2. It has to be Electric powered with Vehicle to Grid, Vehicle to Load and Solar Recharging capabilities
3. In this way the vehicle would fulfill most needs of African drivers – low running cost, simple, power to home/business, power to run a small business on the road and emergency charging.

Confession – I am involved with Straton Solar so have a bit of vested interest in promoting that side of the market.

Of course that Africa’s sales of VW vehicles is less than 1% of the global sales volume for Volkswagen AG could have a bearing on our local VW’s ability to be taken seriously when it comes to vehicle design and direction!

BUT – Volkswagen’s purchase of Scout has made me wonder if maybe someone at VW saw the Scout as an opportunity to develop an Africanised vehicle with just the capabilities outlined above. I like to think that maybe my suggestions were taken seriously – but who knows?

The International Scout was one of the early SUV pioneers in the US, marketed by International Harvester between 1961 and 1980.

The Scout’s comeback, in spirit at least, as an electric-only brand owned by Volkswagen, follows the German carmaker’s acquisition of truck manufacturer Navistar International in 2021.

It is the Traveler SUV offering from Scout that made me think about the Suzuki Jimny – if we sharpen those lines and straighten the rear.

Both the Scout Terra double cab pick-up and Scout Traveler SUV offer an 800-volt electrical architecture and the standard electric version has an estimated range of 560km between charges. However, Scout is also offering a range-extended model, with a petrol-powered generator that extends the range to around 800km.

On Friday Afternoon 1 November 2024 at around 4:00 pm I slipped into Food Lover’s Market on William Moffet in Gqeberha to purchase some essential items for a group of 40 guests.

Over the past years I have learned one lesson from Food Lovers – ‘Only buy vegetables that you intend to consume within the next three days.’

Friday was the occasion for me to learn one more lesson at the hands of Food Lovers Market.

Whilst piling my trolley full of fresh vegetables I noticed a box of cauliflower heads (Yes, cauliflower was on the list!) advertised at 2 for R39.00 OR R24.99 each, so I took four out of the bin and continued shopping, thinking nothing about the fact that some of the heads in my basket had a 30% off sticker and some didn’t. After all they were in the same box, under the same sign, weren’t they?

Thankfully the queue for the checkout was not as long as normal so the egress into paying was quick.

Whilst unpacking my purchases the cashier was very kind to point out an anomaly for me, saying; “Sir, are you aware that you can only get the cauliflower at the special price of 2 for R39.00 if they are marked with a 30% off sticker?”

First reaction from me; “Mam those cauliflower heads were ALL in the same box are there is NO notice on the advertising board that says the special only applies to heads that are marked with a 30% off sign. Please call your manager!”

During the pregnant silence that ensued I did some mental mathematics to check if there was a correlation between the 30% off sticker of the cauliflower heads and the prices as advertised. Conclusion: 30% off of R24.99 is around R7.50, times that by two and you get just below R35.00 for two at 30% off and NOT R39.00 for two as advertised. So, the stickers were WRONG as well.

Along comes the manager who is quite bolshie about my dilemma, refuses to accompany me to the box to see how Food Lovers are being ‘Skelm’ and utters the final nail in the coffin; “That is the price and offer, Sir, take it or leave it!”

I left it.

In hindsight I should have taken 4 of the 30% off marked Cauliflower heads, insisted on paying R24.99 LESS 30% for each. That would have totaled R69.97 and not R78.00 for 4 if I had taken the 2 for R39.00 special.

How to Create a Google RSS Alert:

Should you want to eliminate all email notifications you receive from Google Alerts, you can set them up as an RSS feed and bundle them in one place.

In addition to e-mailing you the latest alert for your choden keyword, Google Alerts lets you send anything directly to a feed you already use. After you set up alerts as an RSS feed, you’ll no longer receive email notifications for that specific alert from Google.

If you have existing Google Alerts set up to send you email notifications, head over to your Alerts home page and click on the Pencil icon to edit its options.

If you haven’t already, you can set up a new Google Alert, click “Show Options” to get there instead.

Now, from the dropdown next to “Deliver To,” select “RSS Feed” and then click the “Update Alert” button.

After an alert has been converted into an RSS feed link, you’ll see an RSS icon next to it under the “My Alerts” section. An RSS feed icon will appear next to the alert you created.

Right-click the icon and then select “Copy Link Address” to copy the RSS feed URL to the clipboard.

Finally, head over to whichever RSS feed reader/aggregator you use, paste the URL, and add your Google RSS Alert to your feed. We use Feedzy for our showcasae.

Adding Google Alerts to an RSS feed is an easy way to view customized alerts generated by Google from a source you already use to receive up to date news and content. This is the best way to utilize Alerts without clogging up your email’s inbox.

What the Guides DON’T Tell You:

Once you have set up and pasted your RSS feed link into your favourite RSS News Reader or News Aggregator DO NOT go back and delete the RSS Feed link you created in your Google Alerts account.

Doing so will render the feed link invalid and you will have to set up your RSS hyperlinks all over again.

Consider this scenario:

1. Your local supermarket experiences a shortage of fresh produce and, as a result, has to ‘ration’ it’s sales of fresh produce to consumers.
2. Savvy consumers resort to establishing their own home farms to grow their own fresh produce – relying on supermarkets for occasional ’emergency’ needs.
3. Savvy home farm consumers sell (but mostly give away) their surplus fresh produce to supermarkets.
4. Over time your supermarket recovers from their shortages, experiences a surplus that it cannot sell before the fresh produce goes off as many consumers have become DIY food suppliers.
5. Fearing a drop in profits supermarkets introduce an ’emergency usage add-on tariff’ for all consumers who were savvy enough to start their own home farms and who only occasionally buy essential fresh produce from supermarkets.

Now, I am sure that ever person who has ever had to actually work to put food on the table will realise just how patently ridiculous and potentially destructive of the financial well being of any business that the above scenario presents.

But, whenever Eskom proposes a similar scenario we treat it with a sense of inevitability. That the proposal will see the light of the day as the people in charge are limited by their inability to actually think like entrepreneurs, like business persons and like a caring corporate.

Eskom said it wanted to move to a tariff structure with significant fixed daily network charges independent of usage.

This means that South African households and businesses would have to pay a much higher fixed charge, regardless of whether they use electricity.

This would lead to those with solar panels paying far more than before, as they would need to pay daily fixed costs to Eskom to be connected to the grid.

Eskom forgets that technology is moving at a faster pace than the emptying of a gravy train by well connected politicians.

It has been estimated that under Eskom’s proposal, consumers using less than 100 kWh per month can expect an electricity bill increase of around 130% per month.

Maybe Eskom should be looking at the near future which could well be one in which the larger proportion of electricity generated and releases into the grid will come from private Small Scale Embedded Generation plants utilising Solar and Wind?

At present consumers have their day time electricity needs covered with Solar Panels, their night time needs covered with batteries but the gap in the market is for a system that will cover 24 hours in a day. At present only wind power offers a cost effective entry level point but has problems – bird strikes, noise, moving parts, 5 – 10 year life cycle for most small wind turbines.

Already consumers are asking about Wind Power and, the day when a wind generator is released that is powerful, quiet, compact and offering a reasonable ROI is when we will have our next explosion of renewable energy installations. Couple such a beast with solar panels and a small battery or a small generator or an Electric Vehicle with Vehicle to Grid capabilities and the ability to cut that umbilical cord to the grid becomes a reality for most consumers.

As per normal, Eskom is stuck in a slow grinding decision process that will render their proposal moot when affordable technology catches up.

Black Friday refers to the day after Thanksgiving in the United States and is considered the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. Here’s a brief overview of its history:

At the beginning of this century the rise of online shopping changed the dynamics of Black Friday. Retailers started offering online deals, giving consumers the option to shop from home.

The emergence of “Cyber Monday,” the Monday following Thanksgiving, further shifted shopping trends. Many consumers began to prefer online shopping, leading to increased sales during this period.

Black Friday remains one of the biggest shopping days in the United States, with both in-store and online sales. Retailers often start promotions well in advance, leading to a broader “shopping season.”

The internet was the impetus for Black Friday to become a world wide phenomenon helped in no small way by lots of media coverage and many social media posts of people fighting for bargains, streaming into stores and posting their bargain finds.
