The incredible support for the annual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer presented by ISUZU MOTORS South Africa, shows that the citizens of the Eastern Cape and Garden Route really care about those affected by cancer, says Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay.

The event takes place on Saturday, 26 October, starting at 8am on Pollock Beach and from there along the beach front.

“Late entries are still coming in, and all indications are that the Big Walk could reach a record of around 13 500 participants.

“This family event, now in its 26th year, has a special place in the hearts of all of us at Algoa FM and the people of Algoa Country. Everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another,” he says.

In addition to the traditional Gqeberha beach-front route, the Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer will be hosted in East London and George, and virtually around the country.

Fun activations can be anticipated on all of the five kilometre routes, hosted by sponsors ISUZU MOTORS South Africa, MTN, and Algoa FM.

In East London and Gqeberha there will also be activations by the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture. aQuellé will be at the finish line with free water to help walkers to rehydrate.

Radhiant will be offering free mammogram scans at the start and finish point of all three events.

Participants will also be able to have a free mammogram at the registration points.

Walkers can spend quality family time in a vibey Race Village at the finish on Pollock Beach grass area in Gqeberha.

Organisers have included a variety of 12 food trucks, a supervised kids’ Play Park, and a family-friendly seating area for adults to relax while the kids have fun.

For the safety of the walkers, a rolling road closure will be managed from 1st Avenue to Admiralty Drive in GQ between seven and 11 in the morning.

We recently supplied a new Prepaid Water Meter Keypad to a local client who returned to the Straton Prepaid Offices saying that the keypad was not working when they entered their recently purchased tokens.

Looking at their till slips it showed KRN 2 which means that he Key Change Tokens had been issued to upgrade the meter.

The client said that they had entered the Key Change Tokens and then purchased the new Black Prepaid Water Meter UIU from Straton Prepaid.

Now the water meter would not accept the new tokens.

So, I got in my car and went to the site to see for myself.

The UIU communicated and displayed the correct amount of available water as well as the correct meter number so communication between the two was good.

First step was to reset the UIU – #981# and then re-pair – #999#Serial_Number###

That didn’t work so the next step was to check that the Key Change Token numbers had been entered successfully. The only way to do so is to re-enter the issued Key Change Token numbers, which I proceeded to do.

After the first set of numbers the feedback on the UIU displayed was ‘GOOD’ with a tick. When the client said that they never saw that when they entered the numbers I knew I was on the right path.

After entering the second Key Change Token number the UIU displayed a tick.

NOTE: Not all meters will give the exact same feedback so look out for a tick, beep, series of short beeps, thumbs up, OK etc after entering each set of numbers.

After that the new prepaid water meter token numbers were entered without a problem.

The solar market is experiencing what people with economics degrees call a ‘correction’.

At the height of loadshedding consumers were making emotional decisions and throwing money at Eskoms so called incompetence. Amidst general doom and gloom remarks from established and social media we saw ‘fly by nights’ flooding the market – Garden Services, Plumbers, Handymen, Farmers and the like all became instant experts and, in the process. managed to muddle the market for many.

Now, as we eye 200 days without loadshedding, and fully expect to see a full year of steady supply, the solar market ‘correction’ is taking place rapidly as businesses close down, go into business rescue and return to what they did before they decided to enter a market ripe for plucking of the gullible and emotionally motivated consumer.

With the exit of these ‘fly by nights’ we see an oversupply of equipment in the market and suppliers looking to offload expensive inventory. Once that inventory is gone it will be replaced by newer generation equipment at a higher price point.

Bona fide electrical contractors are now assuming their proper place in the market and steadily installing excellent equipment with excellent long term guarantees.

“We learned one thing in our industry – Doing it right the first time and never having to go back is the path to prosperity,” says Straton Electrical.

So, Where to for the Solar Industry?

The current wave is for self generation and self consumption without the use of batteries. i.e. Grid Tie in order to drastically lower the cost of an installation, speed up ROI and future proof against rising electricity costs AND aging municipal infrastructure.

We may have no loadshedding but the regular failing of municipal electricity infrastructure is now ever present.

So – the sales advice now given by Straton Solar has changed somewhat to an emphasis on installing as many solar panels as possible with a small battery or, preferably NO BATTERY AT ALL.

A solar installation with no battery is around 60% of the cost of one with a battery and the electricity price per unit over 20 years will remain fixed at around one third of the cost of a solar installation with a battery – less than R0.70 per kWh as opposed to R2.60 per kWh (depending on the size of the battery).

Profitable businesses seeking a tax write off would do well to look at a Solar Installation for a DOUBLE whammy that will last for many years. It is possible to install a solar system, write off the entire installation to depreciation in one go and still continue to benefit from vastly reduced self generation of electricity for years to come.

“A recent system for a local industrial factory in Gqeberha indicates that the price of system will not only pay for itself immediately but continue to save on electricity costs for a minimum of 20 years. Our estimates on the R1 Million installation are that the client will eventually save just under R5 Million rand over 20 years IF Eskom’s increases are kept to a wildly conservative 6% per annum.” says Straton Solar.

Lets Look that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Infrastructure Challenges as an Example:

The NMB has faced several significant challenges regarding its electrical municipal infrastructure during 2024.

Here are the key issues that have been reported:

The municipality continues to struggle with aging electrical infrastructure, which has been a persistent problem. This deterioration has led to frequent outages and difficulties in maintaining reliable electricity supply.

In early September, strong winds caused damage to the electrical infrastructure, leading to power outages in various areas. Specifically, four 132kV overhead transmission towers collapsed, resulting in outages affecting at least four municipal wards.

Following the collapse of the transmission towers, some areas experienced power outages lasting up to 14 days. This prolonged disruption has significantly impacted residents and businesses.

There are ongoing discussions about the need to increase budgets for infrastructure maintenance and upgrades. The municipality acknowledges that without adequate funding, the challenges posed by aging infrastructure will persist.

These challenges highlight the urgent need for improvements in the electrical infrastructure of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to ensure a reliable and sustainable power supply for its residents.

Unfortunately, the above challenges are not confined to just the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Struggling municipalities experience the same challenges and need billions of rand to catch up with maintenance and replacement since the dawn of democracy.

Details of Some Key Municipalities Electrical Issues:

Dipaleseng Local Municipality: Experienced power interruptions due to a failure of a dedicated power transformer. Specific outages were reported, but the exact duration was not detailed in the sources.

Balfour Town: This area faced outages linked to the municipal networks that supply electricity. Again, while the cause was identified, the duration of the outages was not specified.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality: Reported challenges with aging infrastructure and maintenance issues, leading to sporadic outages affecting various areas.

City of Johannesburg: Experienced infrastructure challenges that resulted in power outages, particularly in under-resourced areas.

Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality: Faced ongoing issues with electrical supply reliability, attributed to infrastructure maintenance backlogs.

Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality: Reported difficulties in managing electrical distribution, leading to service interruptions.

Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality: Reports indicate ongoing issues with electrical supply reliability, attributed to infrastructure maintenance backlogs and aging equipment.

Sarah Baartman District Municipality: This area has faced challenges related to inconsistent power supply, particularly in rural areas where infrastructure is less developed.

Chris Hani District Municipality: Residents have reported frequent outages due to infrastructure failures and maintenance issues, affecting both urban and rural communities.

Amathole District Municipality: Similar to other municipalities, Amathole has experienced power interruptions linked to aging infrastructure and insufficient maintenance.

City of Cape Town: Encountered increased electricity demands in growing areas, leading to maintenance backlogs and service interruptions. Reports indicate challenges with aging infrastructure and the need for upgrades to meet demand.

Overstrand Municipality: Faced issues related to infrastructure maintenance, particularly in coastal towns where demand has surged. Residents reported frequent outages due to equipment failures.

Eden District Municipality: Experienced power supply inconsistencies, especially in rural areas where infrastructure is less developed. Challenges include aging equipment and insufficient funding for maintenance.

Drakenstein Municipality: Reported difficulties with infrastructure reliability, leading to sporadic outages affecting various neighborhoods. The municipality is working on plans to address these challenges but has faced delays.

West Coast District Municipality: Encountered infrastructure challenges due to increased demand and vandalism of electrical infrastructure. Municipalities within this district have struggled to maintain consistent power supply.

• SALGA Dashboard reports NO progress from Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality
• 86% of Municipal prepaid meters have been upgraded
• Eskom still has to issue 2.9 Million Key Change Tokens
• 92 941 meters need to be updated per day to reach 24 November 2024 deadline

SALGA has established a dashboard where the status of TID rollover meter reset is displayed. The dashboard consists of various parameters on the TID rollover data, such as total number of prepayment meters to be reset, number of prepayment meters that have been reset per municipality, outstanding number of prepayment meters. It is from this background that SALGA will collect data from municipalities on a quarterly basis by means of an online questionnaire.

Want to know how your municipality is performing?

1. Select the drop down for your province
2. Tick the box for your municipality
3. Read the results

SALGA’s main dashboard reports that 3 615 285 (86%) or prepaid meters have been reset with 599 030 (14%) meters outstanding.

The above numbers do NOT include Eskom’s direct clients using prepaid electricity meters – those numbers are worse: Eskom’s KRN rollover started in August 2023, but in the 14 months since, it has updated less than 60% of the 6.9 million prepaid meters on its database.

That would make around 10.5 Million municipal or Eskom direct prepaid electricity meters installed in South Africa.

The above numbers DO NOT include the massive prepaid meter numbers installed by companies like Straton Prepaid, though. That market is serviced by around 512 Payment Processing companies and the number of units installed is a moving target hard to pinpoint.

Key change tokens are issued as clients purchase electricity – the process is two fold:

Eskom will decide which area will become ‘live’
When clients purchase electricity they will receive two key change tokens from the local or online vendor that they need to key into the keypad.

Meters that have not been upgraded will stop working after 24 November 2024.

We THINK that we may have spotted a concern with the dashboard, though:

We selected the Eastern Cape and then Nelson Mandela Bay and the numbers reported showed that of the 145 576 prepaid meters to be reset NONE had been done so.

Local residents are well aware of this reset as they receive notifications on their purchase slips and via adverts on local radio stations.

Let us assume the best case scenario that the numbers of prepaid meters reset have just not been reported to SALGA by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to update the dashboard!

UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES – This reset exercise will reveal the meter numbers that may:

1. Not be working
2. Be bypassed
3. Topped up via nefarious means

And this represents a potential recovered revenue stream for municipalities and Eskom alike – we will wait and see if these income streams will have a downward pressure on future increases!

Each generation says that they live in trying times – Great Granny and Grandpa lived through the World Wars, Granny and Grandpa walked through the snow at 4:00 am to milk the cows, Mom and Dad were denied the toys that they wanted – the list goes on!

My two grown up and overseas children were always pointing out that their friends had more than them – more toys, more games, more food, more devices.

My two schoolgoing children are what one could call unfortunate products of our fast paced often pointless technological environment. My adult children were only allowed phones at 16, whilst the two younger ones received phones at 6 years of age and have managed to have them taken away from them – almost permanently. In addition they have managed to destroy too many electronic devices to count. Their X-Box has a permanent home in my office – and there satan sits as a reminder of just what happens when children become addicted to devices.

We are not alone though as parent after parent reports or posts content of children that become unplayable after playng video games or watching stupid loud mouthed YouTubers scream and shout about not having enough nerf gun bullets… If I hear one more YouTuber mouth off; “Oh God, Oh God” I may just puke.

Did I ever tell you the story about when I first heard “Oh God, Oh God” emanating from the dwarves device? Yup, it sounded like a 70’s porn movie and I did do a double take!

We have all seen the videos of what happens when we take our children’s devices away from them – mayhem, abuse, shouting, screaming, crying and behaviour that is unacceptable.

And yet, we take it, give in and hand over devices; “Just to keep the peace!”

Have you ever stopped to consider just how damaging that enabling behaviour is?

Consider this: “If I had to treat my partner the way that the children treat her when it comes to devices, she would have packed her bags long ago, so why do we allow all children to learn that abuse works when you want something badly enough?”

Here is a challenge:

Take a leaf out your child’s book and the next time that your boss, your partner, your priest, a policeman or anyone else in any position of authority asks you to do something, react in the EXACT same way that your children do when you take a device away from them:

• Throw yourself on the floor kicking and screaming
• Scream a few expletives
• Accuse the person in authority of abusing you
• Point at a peer and say that whatever is being asked is unfair as; “So and so got away with it”
• Throw your stuff on the floor
• Generally be the biggest asshole you can imagine.

Then, when you are called out by that person in authority:

• Threaten to go to the police to report abuse
• Stand and stare blankly at them
• Walk away and continue doing exactly what you were told not to do

How many children sit in church with an active device in their hands? Let’s be honest here – anything that turns you away from God is Satan, so you are allowing Satan into a place of worship, a temple of God.

Sure, there are so many apps available to help limit screen time but my fear is that hese measures are too late. We created Satan and now we are fighting a losing battle to control him entering our children’s minds.

Join the movement to claim back healthy living for our children and don’t throw yourself on the floor when I call you out for being a selfish arsehole for enabling your children to be abusive.

Think back a number of years to when we used to have groceries, medicine and meat delivered by bicycle. Mom or Granny would phone the store and a fit man on a ‘dik wiel’ would cycle around to drop off your purchases.

It worked, provided employment, saved time and was environmentally friendly.

Soon after we had motorbike delivery drivers whizzing around on our roads delivering medicine, food, meat and groceries. In Gqeberha we even used to have an annual motorbike delivery race on the Scribante Race Track.

Then we moved on a bit and people had to travel to the shops to purchase their food.

With the advent of COVID we moved back in a modern forward way at a rapid pace in terms of technology and same day deliveries became the norm with some companies guaranteeing a sixty minute delivery time.

Brightly coloured small motorcycles have now become the norm on our roads as these delivery drivers race the ‘last mile’ to deliver to eager customers.

But now we have a small concern over these deliveries – the expense in terms of entry requirements for the drivers, maintenance costs on cheap motorcycle imports, accidents and an increase in carbon Dioxide emmissions from boy racers delivering on a timeline.

Lets look at the (could be xenophobic) elephant in the room – food delivery drivers are mostly of foreign extract, have motorcycle licenses and experience and are more familiar with piloting motorcycles. If we take away the requirement to have a motorcycle license to be a delivery driver we could lower the entry level requirements quite significantly.

How do we do that?

With e-bikes of course! In South Africa you do not need a motorcycle license to pilot an e-bike on our roads.

Of course price plays a huge part in which delivery motorbike is used. The most popular motorbike currently is the Big Boy 150 which, with delivery box and bracket, comes in at around R20 000. With a fuel consumption of around 2.4l/100 km (41km/l) on an 8.5l tank, it has a range of around 350km for around R180.00 per tank.

Let’s compare a popular e-bike with the Big Boy:

A comfortable WOWeBike e-Trike with lots of storage room will clock in at around R67 000.00 – just over three times the price of a Big Boy.

You can expect a similar range to the Big Boy from a battery top up that will cost less than R3.80 – imputing around 93 000 km of range before breaking even agaonst a motorbike JUST on the petrol price. Servicing of the E-Trike is much cheaper owing to less moving parts so one can assume that you will save a minimum of R2000 every 5000 km which brings the savings on service to R37 000 over 93 000 km and making the purchase of an E-Trike even more compelling.

Throw in other small benefits such as no need for a license or renewals, no traffic fines, safer driving, lower insurance costs, ability to use roads and pathways excluding motorcycles, no engine noise, more exercise and the ONE HUGE BENEFIT – the ability for the supermarket/chemist/security company/fast food outlet to crow to the heavens about their commitment to Green Energy along with an added commitment to lowering the entry level costs for delivery drivers and we could well be on to a winner of epic proportions.

Most delivery drivers are paid per order, between R25 to R30. It is estimated that they then earn around R3 000 per week, making 20 to 24 deliveries a day on average.

At present the e-Bike market in South Africa is fragmented as players battle to gain dominance. There are a few players, like WOWeBikes in Patenoster, that assemble locally which augurs well for continuity of supply and countrywide support.

• The average Middle Income home consumes 1000 kWh of electricity per month
• A 9% average increase in electricity cost per year could see Middle Income homes paying R8 144.94 per month for electricity 20 years from now

In a nutshell the one compelling reason to install a Grid Tie only Solar System is: Major Cost Savings and a potential ROI of R1.8 Million (on certain installations).

On behalf of Straton Solar I recently completed a study of the Electricity prices for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

I collated the prices in c/kWh for private householders using prepaid and credit meters.

Looking at consumers who are on a credit meter and consume more than 950 kWh per month one can see that the price per kWh has increased from 180.68 cents per kWh in 2017 to 318.41 cents per kWh in 2024 – an almost doubling of the charges.

With loadshedding showing signs of becoming almost non-existent the need for large battery backup has become much less and, naturally, focus will now shift to using solar installations to reduce every growing monthly electricity bills.

A fairly decent grid-tie only (no batteries) solar installation of around 8 kW will cost around R100 000.00

Based on 5 hours of generation per day that equates to just more than 37 kWh per day at a 94% efficiency for the system.

That will then equate to around 1144 kWh of power generated off of your roof per month. The average middle class home consumes around 1000 kWh per month.

If the system has a lifetime of 20 years you will generate 24 829 kW of power over 20 years which will cost you 0.23 cents per kWh.

IF Electricity Prices increase ONLY by 9% per annum:

• In 20 years time you will still be paying 0.23 c/kWh whilst
• The price of electricity in Nelson Mandela Bay will be 1 637.15 c/kWh

Put another way – If you consistently consume 1000 kWh of electricity per month over the next 20 years:

• With a grid tie solar system as above your electricity will cost you R416.66 per month whilst
• Staying connected to the municipality only will cost you R8 144.94 on AVERAGE per month
• Over 20 years this scenario represents a potential saving of R1.8 Million – an excellent return on your investment

Visitors to the Eastern Cape’s favourite family festival will be enthralled by the selection of over 300 selected stalls, will be shouting “yee haw!” during high-energy horse shows, and inspired by the conservation theme in the refreshed Walk on the Wildside marquee, promises Wildsfees director Jenni Honsbein.

Visitors will be able to find out more about the province’s rich marine, coastal and inland natural heritage at the Walk on the Wildside experience, which includes activities for children.

The latest in camping equipment, agricultural machinery and new vehicles, will also be on display in separate expos that form part of the Wildsfees.

Themed “kuier” areas have been created for friends and family to connect and relax while savouring estate wines, cold drinks, freshly prepared meals and snacks beers and speciality spirits.

Multi-time aerobatics champion Patrick Davidson will enthral the crowds on Sunday.
